Firebender Fire Nation emblem

Yeoh was a Fire Army general during the late Hundred Year War. After retiring, he settled in the Fire Nation colony Linsho. Following the Great War's end, Yeoh witnessed the Harmony Restoration Movement and subsequent decolonization processes; seeing these as a threat to his and other Fire Nation colonists' lives, he became radicalized and organized a militant group called the "Loyalists" to preserve the status quo in Linsho. In doing so, he became the main opponent of the "Restorationists", a group of militant decolonization activists.[1]

History[]

Yeoh fought for the Fire Army during the Hundred Year War, eventually rising to the rank of general.[1][2] By his late career, he was described as a "grizzled" veteran.[2] At some point, he visited the colonial town of Linsho in former Earth Kingdom lands, and was struck by its atmosphere. The officer decided that the location was the perfect place to later spend his retirement in peace.[1]

After his discharge from the military, Yeoh was not able to immediately relocate to Linsho. He only did so just after the Hundred Year War had ended in his home country's defeat, while the Fire Nation was gradually withdrawing its presence from the colonies. Regardless, Yeoh resolved to achieve his dream of spending his last years in Linsho, still holding the town in high regard and convinced that the settlement's connections to the Fire Nation were too strong to be severed.[1] He even took his young son Yiko with him,[3] and built a small mansion outside the town. There, he spent much time gardening and tending to an aviary with his beloved sparrowkeet pets.[4] As former general, Yeoh commanded substantial respect and even the local mayor, Leaf, generally tried to avoid confrontations with him. As a result, Yiko was able to get away with almost any wrongdoings. This, alongside Yeoh's too lenient parenting style, resulted in the boy growing up to become irresponsible and spoiled, much to the former military officer's frustration.[3]

Yeoh's hope of a quiet life in Linsho were later dashed by the Harmony Restoration Movement, as he was temporarily deported as part of the wider decolonization programme. The Harmony Restoration Movement was ultimately discontinued in 101 AG, allowing Fire Nation colonists to return to their homes in the colonies. Though Yeoh returned to Linsho, his deportation as well as the full realization that the Fire Nation had indeed lost the Hundred Year War radicalized him. Unable to adjust to a rapidly changing world, the ex-general rallied other militant colonists around him to defend the status quo in Linsho at all costs; their group became known as the "Loyalists". Yeoh's group was opposed by radical Earth Kingdom natives, the "Restorationists" under Chen Lai who demanded that valuable property owned by colonists should be transferred to the community. As he fought to defend his community from "Earth Kingdom aggression",[1] the former general was unaware that he was subtly manipulated by Linsho's most important businessman, Ria.[1][3]

Personality[]

Yeoh was a privileged traditionalist who had grown up genuinely believing the Fire Nation's propaganda and portrayal of the world.[1][2] Thus, he saw his own people as "competent, ambitious, and fair" and perceived the Fire Nation's rule over its colonies as a form of beneficial security[1] and uplifting of "lazy" as well as poor members of other nations.[2] Accordingly, he struggled to accept the Fire Nation's defeat in the Great War and the decolonization process. Unable to understand the motives of the decolonization activists and other resentful Earth Kingdom natives, Yeoh fell back onto a black-and-white worldview and framed their actions as ungrateful "aggression" necessitating him mobilizing a self-defense group in form of the "Loyalists". Despite his militant behavior, however, Yeoh was ultimately motivated by fear and insecurity over a rapidly changing world.[1]

In private, Yeoh was also a mild-tempered man who spoiled his son Yiko as well as his sparrowkeet pets, showering them with affection and never punishing then. Thus, he was never able to control the behavior of either his son or his pets.[3] Genuinely convinced of his worldview's righteousness, Yeoh was also saddened by his son Yiko's often abusive and criminal actions and could not conceive that a Fire National like Ria could be acting out of pure selfishness.[1][3]
