"It is said that a young airbender once undertook a pilgrimage to a mountaintop overlooking the Northern Air Temple to seek wisdom and the poetry of the guru who lived on the peak. But what is wisdom?, asked the guru."
— Excerpt of the Poems of Laghima.

"Wisdom" is a short comic that is part of the anthology Patterns in Time. It focuses on Laghima, a near-legendary Air Nomad philosopher, and takes place around 3,829 BG.

Overview[]

In the distant past, a young airbender seeks out Guru Laghima to ask about the quest for wisdom.

Synopsis[]

Around 3,829 BG, a young Air Nomad uses her airbender staff to fly to a mountain. As their feet touch down near the mountain's peak, their papers and writing utensils are scattered by the wind. After collecting them, the pilgrim walks up the remaining way, meeting Laghima. As the guru stands at a cliff, looking at the distance, the visitor sits down close to him and begins to ask their questions, writing down his answers.

Finally, the pilgrim pauses in her writing, noticing that the guru has begun to slowly levitate upward. Laghima ultimately tells them that "wisdom is formless, for only the wind remains when all else is gone", and he flies into the sky. The wind caused by his movement once more scatters the pilgrim's papers as they watch him in amazement.

Series continuity[]

  • The comic presents its narration as an excerpt of an in-universe book, Poems of Laghima, which is first mentioned in The Rise of Kyoshi's chapter "The Town". The comic confirms that the Poems of Laghima does not only includes Laghima's known statements, but also the context of his remarks.
  • The comic possibly shows the last time when Laghima stood on the ground, as it was later told that after discovering the secret to weightlessness, he lived the last forty years of his life untethered from the earth.[1]

Character revelations[]

  • During Laghima's life, he was already a famous philosopher, even before becoming known as having achieved flight.
  • The location later known as "Laghima's Peak" was used by Laghima as a home.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first story of the franchise set during Laghima's lifetime.
  • This features the earliest known depiction of an air temple.
