"I'm an archeologist. It's literally my job description to get into tight places. Too bad I leaned on that lever over there and shut myself in though." |
— Wen during one of their accident-prone expeditions.[1] |
Wen was an Earth Kingdom archaeologist broadly interested in relics. They explored the four nations in pursuit of their studies.[4]
History[]
Early life and first expedition[]
Born in Ba Sing Se, Wen grew up as a sheltered individual with a youthful sense of optimism and curiosity not yet tarnished by the outside world. Despite opportunities to aid the Earth Kingdom military effort, Wen refused to instead focus on academic pursuits.[2]
Later, Wen became a student of and archaeologist working for the Ba Sing Se University.[3] They were broadly interested in all relics lost to time, having not chosen a specialty. Wen became interested in a golden lion turtle statue that was stolen hundreds of years ago and taken to the Icebound Labyrinth at the South Pole.[4] Additionally, the Icebound Labyrinth had been built by the Fifth Nation, a once powerful pirates coalition about which much had been forgotten.[2][4] Wen found the Fifth Nation a fascinating topic for research.[2] Thus, for their first independent expedition,[3] Wen opted to leave Ba Sing Se for the first time and journey to the South Pole's Icebound Labyrinth to recover lost relics and history.[2] Wen hired an entourage to help them explore, but these assistants turned out to be a crew of pirates after the labyrinth's treasure. Though the archaeologist managed to escape, they pondered on how to prevent the criminals from looting the Icebound Labyrinth.[4]

Wen asked the adventurers for help against Kiwaq's pirates.
After some time, a group of adventurers encountered Wen in the ice cave system by chance. Wen explained the situation at hand, and expressed their worry that the vast historical knowledge in the labyrinth would be lost to time once again, or broken down for coin. They urged the adventurers to return the relics so that they could bring them to the university to study, promising them great rewards.
The adventurers eventually found the Chamber of Fortune, and defeated the pirates' leader, Kiwaq, and forced her to retreat. Wen's allies gave them the golden lion turtle statue, and while Wen was surprised to see them alive, they soon congratulated the adventurers and rewarded them for their efforts. They were interested to learn that Kiwaq and the other pirates were descended from the thieves that built the labyrinth, and contemplated making the matter the subject of their research. However, Wen pointed out that the pirates would soon be able to regroup and return for the other treasures in the labyrinth, and offered to reward the adventurers again if they could secure as many relics as they could.[4]
Razor Reef and Hegemon's Folly[]

Wen's expedition to Razor Reef led to a series of encounters with all kinds of intruders.
Later, Wen ventured to Razor Reef in the Mo Ce Sea, where they hoped to study the secrets of Master Tidao. They were initially frightened when another group of adventurers met them, as they feared that they were hostile. However, after the archaeologist realized they were friendly, Wen proposed they study the secrets of the island together. Before long, the group's studies were disrupted by successive raids by Kiwaq's pirates, Masaru's Fire Army soldiers, and Boqin's Earth Kingdom soldiers. All of them intended to capture Tidao's valuable texts for their own purposes. To Wen's luck, their newly found companions proved to be capable fighters and fended off these attacks.
Wen and their team were thus able to continue researching Tidao's texts until another ship arrived at Razor Reef. This one was crewed by a group of Kyoshi Warriors led by Suki. Unlike the previous visitors, these newcomers were friendly and had come in the hopes of finding Tidao for training purposes. Even though the Kyoshi Warriors were disappointed that the master had disappeared, Wen and Suki quickly bonded over their shared enthusiasm for the stories of Tidao's legendary exploits. The two groups thus parted on good terms when the Kyoshi Warriors eventually left Razor Reef to continue their journey.[5]

At Hegemon's Folly, Wen discovered ancient training scrolls written by General Wei.
Wen subsequently moved on to Hegemon's Folly, seeking to access the mausoleum of General Wei and explore the artifacts within. The archaeologist succeeded in opening the tomb by solving the puzzle mechanism controlling the entry, but as they made their way into the structure accidentally hit a lever which sealed the mausoleum. As Wen could not find another exit, they were trapped and feared for their life; yet luckily, another group also gained entry into the tomb no long after. This group consisted of Jiang, Jade, Lee, and some mercenaries. Though startled to discover a living person in the burial site, Wen calmed down their new acquaintances by explaining how they had gotten inside. Soon after, Fire Army troops and Earth Kingdom collaborators under Masaru also arrived at Wei's mausoleum, seeking the treasures inside. Realizing their predicament, Wen requested help from Jiang's group.
Jiang and the mercenaries bested the Fire Nation forces, whereupon Wen could resume the conversation with their new allies. The archaeologist realized that Jiang, Jade, and Lee had hoped to gain something of financial value in the tomb. In this regard, Wen had to disappoint the group, stating that as far as they could tell, the grave goods at the main tomb were only of historical value. Disappointed, Jiang and the mercenaries subsequently departed. However, Wen offered Jade and Lee to seek artifacts in the smaller grave sites nearby. The three subsequently explored the area largely without issue, aside of having to fend off one angry platypus bear. Eventually, they discovered a scroll in one of the smaller tomb. Wen was delighted upon realizing that this was one of Wei's martial arts training scrolls, an object "worth a lot more than several of [Jade's] shops put together".[1]
Personality[]
Wen enjoyed solving mysteries, overcoming challenges, and the thrill of discovery. As a daring explorer who was uncaring (and sometimes blissfully unaware) of danger, Wen believed that "problems prove the authenticity of an adventure". In research, it was always the legends of pirates that fascinated them the most; a curiosity born out of comparing the free-spirited lives of pirates and Wen's sheltered upbringing.[2]
