"Weaver's Ball" is a comic book that is part of the anthology Patterns in Time.
Overview[]
Korra begins her firebending training with a strict new teacher while she tries to sneak away to the Glacier Spirits Festival.
Synopsis[]
In the Southern Water Tribe compound, Avatar Korra is introduced to Master Yim by the White Lotus leader, as he is meant to become her new firebending teacher. Already at their first meeting, Yim warns Korra that he is unlike any of her previous teachers, as he would not offer any grace due to her status as the Avatar, and that he would leave if she questions his methods. When his new pupil brings up her desire to attend the Glacier Spirits Festival week, Yim sternly informs Korra that he does not want to hear about any of it, stating that she needs to spend her time training instead.
Over the next days, Yim begins to teach the Avatar; however, to his growing frustration, she makes little progress and the quality of her firebending even appears to decline as the festival approaches. He finally asks Korra what is distracting her so much, but when Korra brings up the Glacier Spirits Festival in response, he angrily dismisses her. Concluding that the festival is affecting the Avatar's focus, he orders her to go to her room and copy Avatar Szeto's theory of grain distributions until she can concentrate again. During the evening, Korra sneaks away from the compound to go to the festival.
At the Glacier Spirits Festival, Korra encounters several youths from Wolf Cove and is surprised to learn that weaver's ball is the most popular arcade game of the year. She introduces herself as the Avatar, to the surprise of the others, while one boy refuses to believe her, belittling Korra. Provoked by the boy, Korra sends a firebending attack in his direction and manages to set the game's net alight. Korra despairs seeing the damage she has done, but her father Tonraq arrives and extinguishes the fire with his waterbending. Tonraq and Senna escort Korra back to the compound, entrusting her back to the care of Yim.
On a later day, Tonraq brings the children from the festival to the compound so that they can play weaver's ball with Korra. As Yim looks on in slight disapproval, the waterbending master tells the firebender that he may be training the Avatar, but then adresses his daughter, adding that "you won't be a kid forever".
