The Netflix Live Action Adaptation — A Case for Positivity

As we slowly approach the release of the new Netflix live action series, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the cynicism surrounding the show. Every small comment or minor change from the creators gets followed by a cacophony of voices screaming that the franchise is ruined. Every new trailer gets hyper-analysed and dissected until it becomes incontrovertible proof that the show will be a failure. But today, I want to pull you out of that negativity spiral. I want to block out all the doubters and haters, and get you excited for what is to come. To show not just why you should be hopeful that it will be good, but why it has the potential to be great. Here are my 5 reasons to be positive about the upcoming live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Lets get the most contentious one out of the way first: the show is a chance to fix some of the flaws in the original series. But, I already hear you scream, the original animated series was amazing! And you know what? Yeah, you are right. The original animated series is an amazing show and one I have incredibly fond memories of. My love for the show is part of the reason I am still here on the wiki. But it was not perfect. It had some flaws, parts of the story that could have been done better or integrated more seamlessly. The live action adaptation has the benefit of being able to see the entire worldbuilding that was done across all three seasons, see what could have been presented better, then take all the awesome parts and build and improve upon that organically.
To get that kind of improvement, you need the right people, which leads me onto my next point: the people making the show, cast and crew, care about doing it right. I have heard some comments suggesting that the people making the show don't care about it or are only doing it for the money. I could not disagree more. Every trailer, interview, and behind the scenes clip I have seen, you can see the passion they have for making an amazing show and how excited everyone is to be a part of it. They understand the nostalgia people have for the series, which was clear from the very first teaser trailer we got. Whenever you create an adaptation or sequel to an existing franchise, changes are inevitable. Its how the franchise continues to grow and develop and gain new fans. The best thing we can hope for is that the people working on adapting it understand what made it so beloved to begin with, and have as much love for the characters as we do. For me, seeing the characters in the Netflix show truly does feel like seeing them come alive.
And it's not just the cast and crew that care: Netflix care about making a good show. I was trying to think of an elegant way to say this, but to put it very simply, Netflix are marketing the crap out of the show. We are constantly getting new interviews, new trailers, new photos, but in a way that feels organic. They aren't just throwing everything at us to see what sticks. They are taking their time, gradually giving us more and more glimpses to build up the hype. Every new release feels like it was intentionally designed to appeal to everyone, wetting the appetite of old fans by teasing us with what is to come and demonstrating to new fans why the franchise is so beloved as it is. With all the effort and passion that is being put into the show, it is clear they want to see it succeed and thrive. Both for old fans, and for people that have never seen the show before.
Mention of adapting Avatar inevitably brings up comparisons to the panned live action film. To this, I will simply say: the live action film exists as a warning of what not to do. The failures of the film were not because it was in live action, but because they forget the most important thing: to make a good story. It serves as a warning that a project will not succeed just because it is Avatar. I have mentioned above how changes are inevitable when going from one medium to another, and that is certainly true, but the film serves as a warning of what happens when those changes go too far. When something is changed merely to be different, not to serve a purpose that necessitates those differences. When the heart of a story is lost. The creators are plainly aware of the backlash the film got and taking steps to avoid those pitfalls. To ensure authenticity in how the characters are presented, to take care in how the story and world evolve and are brought to life on screen. And first and foremost: to make a good story.
Which brings me nicely onto my final point: embracing being in live action opens up so many possibilities. Every medium is different, but it is by embracing those differences that new and interesting ideas can be explored. Telling the story in live action shouldn't be viewed as a problem, it should be viewed as an opportunity. To create a deep, immersive story that truly feels like you are in the Avatar world. To feel the heat of an Agni Kai, the chill of the Water Tribes, every hit of earthbending, the wind soaring past as you ride on Appa. The original animated series is its own story, that embraces what animation can be. The live action show can do the same. We cannot have the view that the only successful path the live action show can go on is the one walked by the animated series. That because it is different, that means it is bad. What matters is judging the quality of the new show on its own merits, not how it compares to anything else.
I hope this column has served to get everyone hyped for the new show. Whatever happens with the live action show, it means a new era of fans coming into the Avatar community. And in the end, that is reason enough to feel positive for me.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Avatar Wiki!
We’ve just recently entered the Year of the Dragon, so it’s a pretty good time to look at our latest releases – and what we can look forward to in the rest of the year.
In July last year, the Republic City setting toolkit rolled out digitally to players of Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game. The physical book started shipping a few months later. This expansion went hugely in depth into Republic City, and took a peek at what makes the city tick – not all of which we know from the books and comics. It offers a look at ten of the city’s districts in detail, and even if you’re not interested in TTRPG, it’s yet another instalment that’s great if you simply want to explore more about the Avatarverse in general. Aside from the lore of Republic City, the expansion also introduced three new playbook styles, as well as mechanics around vehicles, pro-bending, and mecha. A new adventure, The Quick and the Quarrelsome, lets us work with Mako to resolve a shady situation around races being held in underground tunnels.
Then, right around Halloween, we got Azula in the Spirit Temple. We’ve waited years since Smoke & Shadow to see what happens next to such an important character, and it certainly paid off. Personally, I do love how character-focused it was. Azula trying to ‘improve herself’ is something that felt like it couldn’t take just one comic, so I think it’s nice that it ended with Azula rejecting her ‘second chance’ while the greater narrative seemed to leave the door open for something else. It also seemed to somewhat serve as a bridge between Azula in the Gene Luen Yang’s comics and whatever happens next – so I’m certainly keeping my eyes peeled to learn what happens to her after this!
Most video game news since our last update has been pretty sad. Most notably, Avatar: Generations was shut down on December 2. I had genuinely come to love the game and find it pretty addictive, even with the gacha elements – it seemed to nail the tone of Avatar in all of its new content, and let us see character and location designs from the much-loved Kyoshi novels. I truly found myself with way more time on my hands once the game was finally over. Quest for Balance also came out, though I have to agree with many others that it’s not a game I’d play without the Avatar label on it (I still haven’t finished it as an otherwise Avatar completionist – oof).
We also got our first release from the official Avatar: The Last Airbender soundtrack at the end of last year! I love pretty much all music from Avatar, and it’s nice that more of it is becoming available – there had pretty much been nothing for a decade after the release of The Legend of Korra Book 1 soundtrack. Also related to that, both HammerOfThor and I attended the world premiere of Avatar In Concert. If they’re playing near you and it’s affordable for you as a fan, I can’t recommend it enough! There’s not much better than hearing The Last Agni Kai played live (well, apart from ‘Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall’ ‘Peace’, or…) It was honestly one of my first experiences with the fandom in-person generally too (shout out to the amazing Katara cosplayer there!), and was just magic to see Bryan Konietzko and Jeremy Zuckerman on stage.
The official Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast has also recently returned for a third season, covering Book Three: Fire! I’m not fully caught up, but I’m definitely excited to see Janet and Dante discuss such an interesting and epic season with their guests. I find it pretty easy listening since you already know a lot – but of course, there’s a lot you can learn that’s completely original to the podcast. So, get listening everyone!
So, what’s next? Well, as I type this, we’re only a week away from the big Netflix adaptation of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender. Since the last instalment of this column, we’ve had trailers, still images, press releases, and more. I’m sure that a lot of my fellow columnists will be discussing it at length in this edition of the Ba Sing Se times, so, to keep it simple: we know it will consist of eight episodes, and that it will cover the events of Book One: Water (of course, altered to apparently be less episodic, and so the story can adapt to a different episode length – plus other creative choices up to the writers and producers). My own opinion so far has been relatively neutral, more or less – I think the costuming and set design especially looks promising, but it all depends on the script, which is something we’ll need to wait for in order to properly judge!
This summer, we also have the next instalment of Chronicles of the Avatar to look forward to, and the first to be penned by Randy Ribay. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the book, but it seems to focus on Roku and Gyatso being tasked to address an issue by Sozin pretty early on in the ‘mastering the elements’ phase of his journey. Roku’s life has been expanded upon before in the TTRPG, but this is giving depth to a much earlier period of his childhood. I’m intrigued as to what will go down – Roku is the past Avatar we probably knew the most about before he got a book series, so in a way a story is more constrained – but also has more potential to link up to things we already know about.
As for the comics, we know it’s going to be Mako’s time to shine at an unknown date with Mystery of Penquan Island. In August, we’ll also visit Iroh and June again with The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer. It actually looks pretty interesting – I, like many of you, do really like June, and the idea of a powerful tea cartel causing trouble does seem pretty interesting.
Also related to Iroh and tea will be Uncle Iroh's Adventure Guide, another TTRPG coming out this autumn. I did hope that the Spirit World expansion would be next, but I’m definitely excited to see Jasmine Island, a completely new location that’s set to be introduced to the Avatar canon. We’ll seemingly learn more about Lu Ten, who’s been fairly mysterious up to now. Seemingly, Zeisan and Khandro also have an unknown link to this island, so that’s even more Roku content this year (fitting for the Year of the Dragon, huh?) Kyoshi and Korra’s lifetimes will also be covered, but we don’t know what that will be yet. At least two more playbooks will also be included in the expansion set. There will also be new mechanics so that you can pass your entire adventure down to the ‘next generation’ and so play a game that covers all five time periods! Sounds pretty fun to me.
Avatar Studios also becomes closer each passing day – so let’s remember to stay excited in case there are any big announcements this year! Also, feel free to let me know in the comments what you are most excited for.
Let's face it. Flies suck. They buzz around and are a general nuisance (one is even doing it right now). Even worse - they smugly mock your attempts to slap them or spray them without getting toxic chemicals all over your crockery and food.
Sometimes I have to wonder, wouldn't it be better if we were benders? Surely we would have an organic, eco-friendly, chemical free way of killing those pesky flies. But which element is best?
Let's get the obvious out of the way - earth would be horrible. No offense to the noble element but I don't see it being useful against a fly. Perhaps an earthbender could try to encase a fly in rock but personally, I would rather not slam a massive boulder on my plate or fling one through my windows, only to miss the little blighter entirely.
I don't imagine sandbending would be much better but at least their flying bugs seem large enough to knock out with a well placed rock. Metal probably wouldn't be much better and lava seems a bit over-the-top.
Up next is fire. Fire is a mixed bag. A small, controlled burst could sizzle the little bugger with ease (much more effective than anything else). The subelements, on the other hand are too dangerous. Lightning is lightning and combustion bending is more likely to resolve the walls in your house than kill the fly.
With those out of the way, I'm having a hard time deciding between Air and Water.
With Water, you could drown the fly in mid air, kind of like how Katara caught the fish. It would add a whole new meaning to "fly fishing". Just keep your water away from electrical outlets and you have a chemical free way to kill flies. I also wouldn't mind getting water on my food.
They say Airbenders couldn't kill a fly. That's not true, they could easily starve it of air with absolutely no residue. But they wouldn't because they're enlightened enough to know that there is no point in killing a fly when you can become one!
Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Become fly!
