This page covers the events and interactions in "The Southern Air Temple" sub-region of the Patola Mountain Range region in Avatar: Generations.

Main storyline[]

Team Avatar arrives at the desolate Southern Air Temple, touching down at a site called "Nomad's Landing".
Aang [Happily addressing Appa.] We're finally home, buddy!
Appa Mwaaarh!
Katara [Cautiously.] Aang, I know you're excited, but it's been a hundred years since you've been home. A lot can change in that time.
Aang I know, but I need to see it for myself. Appa can stay here while we go up to the temple.
Sokka Great! Let's hurry up then because I am starving.
Katara You're lucky enough to be one of the first outsiders to ever visit an Airbender temple... [Annoyed.] ...And all you can think about is food?
Sokka [Happily.] Hey, I'm just a simple guy with simple needs.
Katara *Sigh*
Aang [Upon advancing deeper into the temple ground.] Huh, that's weird. Usually this place would be swarming with Flying Bison and Winged Lemurs. They love the fruit trees here.
Sokka [Excited.] Fruit?! Where?! Oh oh I spot one! Let me get it!
[Narration: Sokka begins climbing a tree with a single fruit hanging from a precarious looking branch.]
Katara [Concerned.] Sokka, be careful!
Sokka Almost... got... it...
[Narration: *CREAK*]
Sokka Uh oh.
[Narration: *CRASH*]
Katara Sokka! What did I tell you-
??? SCREEEECH!
Sokka Uh... what was that?!
Lion vulture Raaaaagh!
Team Avatar [Surprised and frigthened.] Aah!
Aang Woah! Hey! Calm down my feathered friends. We mean you no harm!
Sokka Ge back, Aang! We gotta eat them before they eat us! It's meat versus meat!
Aang No, don't hurt them! We just need to deter them so we can escape!
Team Avatar temporarily drives off the lion vultures.
Aang Phew, we got away! That was crazy. I've never seen birds like that here before.
Katara Let's hope they don't come back. Sokka, you have to be more careful.
Sokka [Dejected.] ...
Katara [Concerned.] Ah, Sokka?
Sokka [Dejected.] ...The fruit got crushed in the middle of the fight.
Katara [Angrily.] How are you still thinking about food?!
Team Avatar wander higher toward the main temple area, halting at the "Silent Junction".
Katara [Concerned.] Aang, before we get to the temple, I want to talk with you about the Airbenders.
Aang What about them?
Katara [Concerned.] Well... I just want you to be prepared for what you might see. [Dejected.] The Fire Nation is ruthless. They killed my mother. They could have done the same to the Air Nomads.
Aang [Concerned.] Well, they could have escaped. The only way to get to an Air Temple is on a flying bison. [More upbeat.] And I doubt that the Fire Nation has any flying bison.
Katara [Dejected.] I hope you're right.
Katara [Addressing Aang.] Hey, what's that thing over there?
Aang [Happily.] Aww, yeah! Come check this out!
The group moves to the temple's airball court.
Aang [Happily.] Welcome to Airball. This is where my friends and I would play... [Dejected.] ...but it looks like nobody has played here in a long time...
Katara [Concerned.] !
Sokka [Trying to lift Aang's mood.] So... uh, this Airball game. How do you play?
Aang [Happily.] Let me show you! [Times passes, and the game is set up.] Ready Sokka?
Sokka [Confidently.] Bring it Airboy.
Aang Okay...
Sokka Aaah... Oof! [Lands in the snow.]
Aang Aang, seven.Sokka, zero.
Sokka [Addressing Katara.] Nnnnngn. Making him feel better is putting me in a world of hurt.
Katara [Happily.] It's very sweet of you!
Sokka [Trying to stand up.] I'm not sure if- Ow! Wait, what's this?!
Katara [Concerned.] A Fire Nation helmet. They were here, at the temple!
Sokka [Determined.] We have to show him...
Aang Show me what?
Katara [Concerned.] ! [Pretending happiness.] Uh... look at this neat Waterbending trick I can do.
Katara's waterbending burys the helmet under snow before Aang can see it. Sokka also gets hit by snow.
Sokka Ack! Katara!
Aang Neat! But enough playing around, let's get to the temple.
Aang [Addressing Katara once Aang is far away enough.] You know you can't protect him forever.
Aang [Dejected.] ...
The group moves on to a part of the temple called "Gyatso's Retreat".
Aang [At Gyatso's statue, happily.] Hey guys, I want you to meet somebody!
Sokka [Confused.] ...A statue?
Aang Monk Gyatso - the greatest Airbender in the world. He taught me everything I know.
A flashback to Aang's youth starts. [Narration: A long time ago...]
Air Nomad Kid [Addressing Aang.] Woah, Aang! You're the Avatar?!
Aang [Flustured.] Ah... yeah.
Air Nomad Kid [Energetically.] Wow! Does that mean you're going to leave to master Earth and Fire next?
Aang [Less than happy.] Uhh...
Gyatso [Addressing the group.] Gather round now pupils! It's time for some practice!
A training session begins, with Aang and another Air Nomad kid facing Gyatso.
Gyatso [Addressing the group.] Remember, Air is a free-flowing element. When you meet resistance, you must adapt to the moment. Now, seek to evade what I throw at you, and aim to deter the aggressor, not harm them. [After the session's end, laughing.] Well done, my pupils. I think you have earned yourselves some cake. Now, continue your practice while I prepare it. [Turning to Aang.] Hm. You're not practicing Aang?
Aang [Dejected.] This whole Avatar thing... maybe the monks made a mistake?
Gyatso The only mistake they made, was telling you before you turned sixteen. But we can't concern us with what was, we must act on what is.
Aang [Concerned.] But Gyatso, how do I know if I'm ready to be the Avatar?
Gyatso Your questions will be answered when you're old enough to enter the air temple sanctuary. Inside, you will meet someone who will guide you on your Avatar journey. [More upbeat.] Now, are you going to help me with these cakes or not?
Aang [Happily.] Haha, alright!
The flashback ends, and the scene returns to Team Avatar.
Katara [Dejected, addressing Aang.] You must miss Gyatso.
Aang [Dejected.] Yeah...
Katara [Surprised.] Aang, where are you going?
Aang The air temple sanctuary. There's someone inside I'm ready to meet.
Sokka [Admiring the sanctuary entrance.] Now that is an impressive door.
Aang Whomever I'm supposed to meet in here should be able to train me as the Avatar.
Katara But Aang, no one could have survived in there for a hundred years...
Aang Well, I survived in an iceberg that long. It's not impossible.
Sokka And it's not impossible they could have a medley of delicious, cured meats! [Trying to open the door.] Hrrrrgh! This. Door. Won't. Budge! Aang, I don't suppose you have a key?
Aang The key, Sokka, is airbending. [He opens the entrance.] Alright, we're in! [Entering the room.] Hello, anyone here?
Katara It's hard to tell, with all these statues.
Sokka Statues?! That's it? Where's the meat?
Katara There's a statue of an airbender, and then a waterbender... and also earthbenders and firebenders. Who are all these people?
Aang [Excited:] It must be the Avatar cycle! These are my past lives!
Katara Of course! When every Avatar passes, they're reincarnated into the next nation in the cycle. Right, Aang? ...Aang? What are you looking at? [The view focuses on the statue of Avatar Roku.] Who is that?
Aang That's Avatar Roku. The Avatar before me. I... I don't know how I know him, but I just do.
Sokka Guys! Hide! Someone's coming this way!
Winged Lemur [After moments of tense silence, revealing himself.] Urh-aah!
Aang [Excited.] Lemur!
Sokka [Excited.] Dinner!
Winged Lemur ! [The lemur flees.]
Aang [Excited.] Wait! Don't run little buddy! Let's be friends! I promise I won't let Sokka eat you!
Katara [Surprised.] Wait, you two! Where are you going?!
Sokka Chasing dinner! Wait, Aang, slow down!
They follow the lemur to the ruined "Altar of Remembrance".
Aang [Excited.] Ah, he ran in there! [After following the lemur inside.] Lemur! Where are-
A close-up of Gyatso's skeleton is shown, surrounded by a large number of skeletons in Fire Nation armor.
Aang [Devastated.] Gyatso... No.
Sokka [Following Aang inside.] Aang. There you are! I was just kidding, I'm not gonna eat- [Noticing the corpses.] Oh... oh no. Le-let's get out of here, Aang, it'll be okay.
Aang ... [His grief triggers the Avatar State.] ...
Sokka ! [Shocked.] Aaah!
Katara [Arriving, addressing her brother.] Sokka! Are you alright? What's happening?
Sokka It's Aang! He found the body of Gyatso.
Katara Oh no. We have to try to calm him down.
Sokka Yeah, and quick! Before he blows us off the mountain!
Katara [Trying to calm Aang down.] Aang, can you hear us? We're here for you! Please, let us help!
Sokka It's no use! We have to snap him out of it!
Katara [Approaching Aang.] Aang, I know how hard it is to lose the people you love. I went through the same thing when I lost my mom. Monk Gyatso and the other Airbenders may be gone, but you still have a family.Sokka and I, we're your family now.
Sokka Katara and I aren't going to let anything happen to you. Promise.
Aang ... [Leaves the Avatar State.] ...I'm sorry, I lost control.
Katara It's okay. It wasn't your fault.
Aang [Dejected.] But you were right. If the Fire Nation found this temple, that means they found the other Air Temples too. I am really the last Airbender.
Katara [Dejected.] I'm so sorry, Aang.
[Narration: Sometime later...]
Sokka Ready to head out?
Aang Wait, do you hear...
Winged Lemur Brrra!
Katara He came back, and brought some food!
Sokka [Excited.] FOOD! Om nom nom. Hmph, okay. I guess we won't eat him.
Aang [Excited.] Looks like we have a new member of the family!
Katara What are you going to call him?
Aang [Happy.] How about Momo? Welcome to our family, little buddy.
Momo Rah!
Sokka Alright, to the North Pole we go!
Aang [Excited.] Right, but I know the perfect place for a pit stop on the way... Kyoshi Island!
Fade to black. On the world map, the Kyoshi Island sub-region of the South Sea region can now be unlocked.

Extra mission[]

After finishing the main storyline in the Southern Air Temple sub-region, players can return to do additional battles, triggering extra interactions as part of a side mission. In this mission, they no longer play as Team Avatar, but as unidentified adventurers accompanying Aang to the air temple at an unknown point during or after the Hundred Year War. The mission starts at Nomad's Landing.
Aang [Addressing the adventurers.] Thanks again for coming along. I want to honor the fallen Air Nomads and to do that I'll first need to clean up the place. *Sigh* I have a pretty big journey ahead of me as the Avatar... I have a whole world to fix, but I want to start here... Hmm, I remember there being a place in the monastery where the monks kept a lot of helpful materials. Let's start there!
[Narration: You come upon a flock of lion vultures picking away at something small that you can't make out.]
Aang No, birdy, please! Those are priceless relics of my people! Stop! Please!
Lion vulture SQUAAARH!
Aang No no no! We need to get them away from these relics!
Lion vulture SKREEEE!
Aang and the adventurers chase the animals away. [Narration: Aang looks down at the relics that the lion-vultures were pecking. They look quite damaged.]
Aang These lion-vultures are going to keep being a problem until the temple and its surroundings are restored.
The group moves to the storage areas of the temple.
Aang Welcome to the air temple repository. This is the place I was telling you about earlier, with all the materials.
Lion vulture Squaah??
Aang Aw man, they made a nest here. Maybe we can lure them outside? [Addressing the animals.] We're sorry to bother you. We just need to grab a few things and we'll leave you alone.
Lion vulture [Aggressively.] SKREEEE!
Aang [Addressing the animals.] Why are you like this?
The group defeats the lion vultures.
Aang [Looking into the storage.] Oh no... So much damage... But thankfully there's still plenty of materials left to gather.
[Narration: You begin to gather important materials...]
The group moves to the "Silent Junction".
Aang [Noticing more lion vultures.] Watch out! There's more of them! [Carefully.] Maybe... they'll be friendly?
Aang RAAARH!
Aang Nope!
The group defeats the lion vultures at the "Silent Junction".
Aang [Happily.] Well, there's plenty of work to be done around here, where do you want to start?
The group moves to the temple's airball court.
Aang [Happily.] Ha ha yeah! Airball! Man, I was great at it.
The group repairs the airball court.
Aang [Happily.] Alright! We're done. So I was thinking, maybe with a few rule changes, we could play? I'm happy to teach you, what do you say?
[Narration: You attempt to practice a few rounds of airball... Time flies by as you get to experience the old Air Nomad game.]
The group moves to the Altar of Remembrance.
Aang [Saddened.] Gyatso... [Addressing the adventurers.] You know, I try not to think about it, but... I can't help wondering what the invasion must've been like...
Lion vulture [Aggressively.] SKREEEE!
Aang [Angrily, addressing the animals.] ENOUGH! PLEASE, just leave this sacred place. Leave my home!
The group defeats the lion vultures.
[Narration: Aang looks at what was once the Shrine of Remembrance during his last visit Now a pile of rubble remains...]
Aang [Saddened, addressing the adventurers.] ... It... It's going to take a lot of work and materials to restore this place. But it's still only a small price to pay compared to what my people had to sacrifice.
The group repairs the Altar of Remembrance.
Aang [More upbeat, addressing the adventurers.] Thank you, this altar will honor the memory of my people.
[Narration: You stop to remember the spirits of those who lost their lives and almost their entire culture. The world feels incomplete without them...]
The group moves to Gyatso's Retreat.
[Narration: You come to the statue of an old Air Nomad monk. It is covered with snow and dirt.]
Aang [Addressing the adventurers.] You know, it's kinda funny. I used to hate doing chores, but Gyatso always made it fun. Okay, let's start restoring his statue and then move on to the rest of the area.
The group restores the statue and the place in front of it.
Aang Yeah! This place looks great! It's almost as I remember it. Still can't believe it's been 100 years. I... I think Gyatso would be proud of our work.
The group moves to the sanctuary.
Aang [Annoyed.] I think I've had enough of these lion vultures.
Platypus Bear Quaaagggh!
Aang [Surprised.] Woah! [Curious.] Uhh... You got some pretty impressive climbing skills for managing to get up here.
Platypus Bear [Quietly, as if thinking about Aang's comment.] ... [Angrily.] QAARH!
The group defeats the platypus bear.
Aang [Addressing the adventurers, talking about the sanctuary.] Well... this place is a LOT bigger than I remember and way messier too. I'm sorry for letting it get this bad. I promise to get this place cleaned up.
The group restores the sanctuary.
Aang [Happily.] Hm. Man, this place looks amazing. Thanks for helping me out! If you ever want to meditate here, you are more than welcome. Heh heh. Who knows, a previous Avatar could appear and impart some important wisdom to you?
[Narration: You begin to meditate under the watchful gaze of Avatar's past.]
End of the extra mission.
