Michael Dante DiMartino Hey, everybody, this is Mike DiMartino, co-creator and executive producer of Korra.
Bryan Konietzko And this is Bryan Konietzko, the other that guy that does that stuff. [David applauds while giving a hushed, mock enthusiastic yell.]
Seychelle Gabriel This is Seychelle Gabriel, I play Asami.
Janet Varney Hey, Janet. I play Korra.
Mike Whoo-hoo!
P. J. Byrne P. J. Byrne, I'm the other guy of the other guy who's the other guy who plays Bolin. [Janet and Seychelle chuckle.]
David Faustino David Faustino, back here. I play Mako.
Mike Welcome, everybody.
David Thank you.
Mike So, quick disclaimer about this episode, I think we have to explain why we did a clips episode, because...
Bryan [Interjects.] We had to.
Mike ... I don't like clips episodes...
David [In the background.] Oh.
Mike ... [Laughs.] historically. I was against it from the start... [Bryan, David, and Seychelle chuckle.]
Janet [Interjects.] Oh, I like where this is going. [Seychelle affirms.]
Mike ... but uh, but...
Janet It can only go down from here. [David affirms.]
P. J. Hey.
Mike But in the end, this turned out great. Yeah, [David affirms.] and it's just one of those things where, you know, during the course of any series, you run out of money. And... [David, Janet, and Seychelle laugh.]
Bryan [Interjects.] Hey, let's...
Mike ... and the network says, "hey, you guys, we're-we're running out of money," uh...
Bryan [Interjects.] Well, let's-let's be really honest with what happened.
David Let's flash...
Bryan [Interjects.] They said, "we're gonna take money out of your budget." So, we...
Mike [In the background; laughs.] Yeah, that's true.
Bryan ... we had money taken away from us...
Janet [In the background; in a disgusted tone.] Ugh, nice.
P. J. Oh.
Bryan ... basically an entire episode's worth, and they said, "well, you can either do a clips episode, or you can let go all of your staff early." So, obviously, we love our crew, and we couldn't make a show without them anyways. So...
David [Interjects.] You're breaking the rules, you told us in the very beginning.
Bryan So, we uh...
P. J. Not now. [David chuckles; makes an angered hushing noise.]
Bryan Just telling the truth. So, we-we um, we said, "you know what?" I remembered there was this uh, Samurai Champloo episode...
Mike [In the background.] Oh right.
Bryan ... that was a clips episode; you know, a lotta, not that we're a true anime show, but so many anime series have clips episodes 'cause they often run out of money, as well. [David gives an affirming murmur.] And um, but I re-I just remember Samurai Champloo did a really cool one, where they-they did about, like, five minutes of new footage, and they-they set it up in a way that the characters were reflecting over what had happened, and kinda talking over it, and pausing it, and stuff. So-so, Mike was really sad when we kinda had to do one, but I said, "look, man, we'll just-we'll do the most creative one we can," and um, and uh, in-in the end, I love it.
Mike Uh, yeah, turned out great.
David S...
Bryan [Interjects.] The writers did a great job, Mike did an awesome job directing it; you guys all did great voices for it, and it's really funny.
David [Refers to when Wu, Mako, Tu, Yin, Bolin, and Varrick's stylized chibi heads pop up over the clipped scenes from previous episodes.] Uh, uh, question on the popup chara-the, [Mike affirms.] when we [Bryan affirms.] pop up, wha...
P. J. [Interjects.] Yeah, popup question to-to, [Seychelle chuckles.] to David Faustino. [Janet and Bryan chuckle.]
Seychelle Pop quiz.
David I was just curious uh, did uh, uh, we-you chose to do 'em you-younger versions, uh...
Bryan [Interjects.] Well, it's wha-they call it chibi.
David Oh.
Bryan It's like uh, like a cute-style.
Seychelle They're so cute.
David Got it, okay.
Janet Cute-style.
Mike Yeah, we-we actually made, there are buttons...
Seychelle [In the background; refers to the popup Mako's fauxhawk.] Mako's hair looks good. [P. J. chuckles.]
Mike ... made for San Diego Comic-Con, like, a couple years ago, and so we...
David [In the background.] Oh yeah, that's right, that's right.
Mike ... u-we used the-we-we kinda used that...
Seychelle [In the background.] Oh.
Janet Oh.
Mike ... as the basis for the-the...
David [Interjects.] You call him a chi-what is it?
Bryan Chibi.
Janet Now, I...
Bryan [Interjects.] It's a Japanese word for "cute".
Janet We wanna know that so we can go to our plastic surgeons and ask for the chibi-style [Mike, Seychelle, and P. J. laugh.] of our faces.
David "Chibi today."
Bryan They often call it "super deformed", which I just think is kind of a...
Janet [Interjects.] What?
Bryan ... weir-weird and cruel.
P. J. And a little inappropriate, yeah.
Bryan Yeah, a little inappropriate. [Seychelle laughs.] So, chibi, I-as far as I know, in Japanese, means "cute".
P. J. Aw.
David [Refers to the scene from "The Voice in the Night" where Asami crashes into Mako on her motorcycle.] Here's where-here's where Asami and-and Mako meet.
Bryan Exactly.
Mike [Refers to Mako detailing his respective relationships with Korra and Asami to Wu.] So, this whole...
Seychelle [In the background.] Here's where it all...
Mike ... first part...
David [Interjects.] He gets lovestruck.
Seychelle ... it all happens.
Mike ... this, you know, this-this kind of involves, you know, the love triangle in Book One, and...
David [Interjects; refers to Mako blushing and stuttering as he looks up at Asami.] There he is.
Mike ... Korra and...
P. J. [Interjects.] He's smitten.
Seychelle [Refers to Asami throwing her hair back after she took off her helmet.] My hair looks good, too.
Mike ... his relationship.
Janet Oh.
P. J. Oh. [Mike gives an affirming murmur.]
Janet Remember how jealous I was [Bryan chuckles.] when I first saw her?
Bryan But wha...
Janet [Interjects.] I mean me as a person, [Bryan laughs.] not as Korra. [Janet and Seychelle laugh.]
Bryan But what's cool is, you know, it's-it's-it's silly, and it, you know, it's-it's recapping the whole, like, love story throughout the series, [Refers to when Mako states that he sees Korra's selflessness as his inspiration.] but what's cool is, like, the end, is Mako matures, and he, like, he's-he's kinda gotten [Mike affirms intermittently.] past that, and he's, like, he isn't just-see Korra as, like, a love interest, or an awkward ex-girlfriend, or something; it's, like, he-he just sees her as the person now, and-and is inspired by her. I think it's...
P. J. [Interjects.] Oh, it's nice way to watch, it's beautiful...
David [Interjects; refers to the scene from "The Spirit of Competition", where Mako tells Korra that he does not reciprocate her romantic feelings.] Here's where he breaks her heart.
P. J. It's a nice way to watch everybody's character arc. [Bryan and Seychelle affirm.]
David Honestly, yeah. Is that P. J.?
P. J. Hi, Paul Byrne [Seychelle chuckles.] from New Jersey, Garden State. I'm... [David and Janet laugh.]
Seychelle [In the background.] I didn't know your name was Paul.
P. J. ... P. J.
Janet P. J., uh, my understanding was you were gonna be brought in to just commentate on the commentary. So... [Seychelle and Bryan laugh.]
P. J. [In the background.] I'm just commentate, you know, that's how I'll do it.
Janet ... if you comment on what we're saying, I'd appreciate it.
P. J. I'm gonna make some calls to Nickelodeon to get to the bottom of why the money was taken away.
Janet [Laughs.] Right. [Seychelle and David laugh.] Get detective on us. [Seychelle affirms.]
P. J. I'm gonna really-gonna sit down with Janet later, to talk about the issue she has when girls whip her hair around. [Janet laughs.] We're gonna talk about that.
Bryan So, we...
Janet [Interjects.] We gotta hash it out. [P. J. affirms.]
Bryan On Avatar, we did something kind of like this, and it was right before the big...
Seychelle [Interjects; refers to Yin criticizing Mako for his "naughty" behavior in kissing Korra.] Oh, grandma.
P. J. That was the best.
Bryan ... series finale, which is we had Tim Hedrick, uh, who is also a writer on this, uh, series and episode, he had this idea on Avatar to do, like, the kids see a play about themselves. And that was, like...
Seychelle [In the background.] Oh, yeah. [David affirms.]
Bryan ... in-on Avatar, that was our kind of our way of doing a-a clips episode; we got to relive all of their, you know, past triumphs and failures, and kinda see their arcs, and-and it was, like, a way to reflect before they went into the big battle, and um, except that was all new animation, and was actually really hard. We had to do tons of design for that episode; so, in a way, this kinda serves as the same-same function.
Mike So, what do you, uh, let's get Seychelle in on here. [Seychelle and David laugh; refers to the scene from "Turning the Tides", where Asami storms away from Mako after he refused to reveal the truth about his kiss with Korra.] We got-we got a little Asami, here. So...
Seychelle [Interjects.] Ooh, a little funkiness, here.
Mike Seychelle, it's been a long time since we got you on the show; [Mike and P. J. chuckle.] what's-what-you got any memories of the early days of, like, first recording, or anything like that?
Seychelle Um, I was... I guess, like, the-think uh, like, it's right now, it's almost, like, fur-full circle, right-full circle, right now, 'cause we're all here together, and I remember I think was-feel like I was gone for the beginning of it, and then, like, the first time I got to really get in the booth, and, like, be with everybody, hearing all these crazy, cool actors do crazy, cool things, and...
Mike [Interjects.] That's right, 'cause you were...
Seychelle ... it's just, yeah.
Mike ... you were off filming, and we were off in-recording you via [Seychelle affirms.] ISDN.
Seychelle And coming here was like a completely different, [Mike affirms.] it was just-it made it so much cooler. Um...
Janet [Interjects.] Plus, we were all like, "up to this point, she's been too cool to [Seychelle and Mike laugh; Bryan affirms.] come in," so you came in as, like, super cool. [Seychelle and David chuckle.]
P. J. Cool.
Seychelle Asami was off doing business ventures.
Janet That's right. [Bryan affirms; Seychelle chuckles.]
Mike How about you-you guys? Early-early memories, good memories, the early days? [P. J. chuckles.]
Bryan Do you remember these episodes?
David I-I just remember au-I remember auditioning, that was fun. [Mike and Bryan chuckle.]
Seychelle Actually, I remember that-the way that I remembered Asami's name was 'cause I thought it sounded like "salami". [Bryan and Seychelle laugh.]
Janet [Laughs.] This is the kind of gold we were brought in [David and Seychelle laugh.] to say!
David That is hilarious. [Mike affirms; Janet sighs.]
Bryan [Interjects.] I love...
Seychelle [Interjects.] That's actually how I remembered it.
Bryan I love-David's like, "I remember auditioning, and I remember being here, right now. [Janet, Mike, Seychelle, and David laugh.] I re...
Janet [Interjects.] Nothing in between.
Bryan ... the four years in between are a blur."
David That's it.
Bryan He's like, "am I on this show? [David laughs; refers to the scene from "Peacekeepers", where Mako, standing at the right of the frame, argues with Korra in his apartment.] Is that that guy on the-the right?" [P. J. chuckles; Seychelle affirms.]
David [Interjects; in a mock unsure tone.] I'm the guy with the red scarf, [Janet affirms; Bryan and Mike chuckle.] right?
P. J. Uh...
Janet [Interjects.] I remember crying...
P. J. [In the background.] Aww.
Janet ... with joy.
David Janet's always crying, though. [Seychelle chuckles.]
Janet But that might be twenty to twenty-five different times. [Janet, Mike, and Seychelle laugh.] Could be any time.
Bryan You-when I showed you the-the first trailer, right? I remember...
Janet [Interjects.] Oh, for sure. [P. J. affirms.]
Seychelle Wow.
Bryan ... I sh-I showed Janet and, like, Mindy Sterling the first trailer, and I was sitting at my desk, and they were behind me, and uh, so I didn't know what their reactions were, and I turned around, and Janet was just bawling.
Janet Now, listen, I was not bawling. [Bryan chuckles.] I had a...
Bryan [Interjects.] Bawling! [Seychelle laughs.]
Janet I had a very classic actress, single, [Mike chuckles.] Gho-Demi Moore from Ghost, tear rolling down...
Seychelle [In the background.] Like, sheer...
Janet ... my cheek, and I think I was like, [In a mock hysteric tone.] "it's so beautiful!"
Bryan Somewhere...
Janet [Interjects.] And I was like, "did we get that? Was I on camera?"
Bryan Yeah, somewhere between what-the story I told and the one she told is the truth.
Janet No, I for sure was crying. I mean, I was not bawling. [Laughs.]
Bryan There were, like, five tear-yeah, not bawling. She was very-any tears coming out of eyeballs...
Janet [In the background.] I know, yeah.
Bryan ... to me, is bawling, you know? Makes me very uncomfortable, so... [David laughs; P. J. affirms.]
Janet [Laughs.] Yeah. I apologize.
David Makes you uncomfortable?
Seychelle [In a sing-song voice.] Boys don't cry.
Janet [Refers to the scene from "The Sting", where Asami tears up after Mako tells her he is not giving up.] Are you uncomfortable, right now? Look, Asami's crying.
Bryan I am! I am.
Janet Okay.
Bryan It makes me very unc-I don't...
P. J. [Interjects.] Aww.
Bryan [Refers to the freeze-frame of Mako's startled expression as Asami kisses him.] I'm like Mako, there; I don't know what's going...
Seychelle [In the background; refers to Mako's fauxhawk during the clips Books One, Two, and Three.] I like Mako's-his hair.
Bryan ... make them cry? I don't know what to do. [David laughs.]
Seychelle [Refers to the freeze-frame of Mako and Asami holding for several seconds as Wu and Mako discuss the kiss; laughs.] That frame, the freeze is good.
David I know. [Mike chuckles.] It's a pretty long freeze for a Ni-for Nickelodeon, yeah. [Seychelle chuckles.]
Janet Can I ask a-a technical, animation question?
P. J. Let's get a tech question...
Mike [In the background.] Sure.
P. J. ... to Janet. Tech-uh, [Refers to the scene from "Night of a Thousand Stars", where Bolin slides up from out of frame in between Mako and Korra after the latter kissed her ex-boyfriend.] that's me.
Janet Wait for it, because it's...
P. J. [Refers to the edges of Bolin's downturned mouth hanging off his face.] How did you make my lips look like that? [Mike laughs.]
Janet Yeah, it's not really that technical, but um, I mean, Mako's eyebrows are very famous, [Mike laughs.] and I'm just wondering if you remember the conversation where you decided to have them be such a specific shape.
P. J. Have them be a...
Mike [Interjects.] Oh, was that a Ryu thing? Was...
Bryan [Interjects.] I think it was Ryu. There's a...
P. J. [In the background.] Fishhooks, they look like fishhooks.
Bryan ... there's an anime, uh, series called Big O, and I believe the guy has very similar, like, I-they always look like spoilers, to me.
David Interesting.
Bryan It looks like something you'd put on a tricked-out Honda. [Janet laughs.] Like, they could...
David I did-I didn't know there was a big thing about uh, Mako's eyebrows.
Bryan Oh, yeah.
Seychelle Oh.
Janet Yeah, because when you see cosplayers, and stuff, everyone's so careful...
David [In the background.] Ahh.
P. J. Oh, yeah.
Janet ... to-that's, like, an easy way, immediately, to identify [Bryan affirms.] who's someone cosplaying, and...
Bryan [Interjects; refers to Bolin's thick, angular eyebrows.] Bolin's eyebrows are pretty famous, too.
Seychelle His are epic, yeah.
P. J. Think they're pretty hot. [Janet affirms.] I'm looking at Janet's...
David [In the background.] Wait...
P. J. ... you might pluck a little too much. [Bryan and Janet chuckle.]
David Am I on...
P. J. [Interjects.] Doing a little plucking. [Bryan and P. J. chuckle.]
Janet How dare you. I know, she may.
David Am I on this show? [Bryan laughs.]
P. J. Is-wait, I have a quick question, [Refers to when Yin negatively compared Mako's behavior with Korra and Asami to his grandfather.] is uh, is grandpa, like...
Mike [Interjects.] Grandpa?
Janet Grandma?
Mike Grandma?
P. J. No, but grandpa, "just like your grandfather."
Bryan [Refers to P. J.'s audio dipping in volume.] You gotta face the mic, there.
P. J. Was your grandfa-I mean, was he not a-a nice guy, in your brains?
Bryan Oh, he just...
P. J. [Interjects.] 'Cause she's always like, "just like your grandfatha."
Seychelle Oh, yeah.
Bryan Apparently, he had a wandering eye, I think.
P. J. Okay, there you go.
Bryan I think that's the idea. [Janet gives a disapprovingly affirming murmur; Mike affirms.]
P. J. Great eyebrows, though. He had great eyebrow-he started it all, for all of us, [Bryan and Janet chuckle.] from me to my brother.
Bryan [Refers to Mako's eyebrows.] Those are Fire Nation eyebrows; uh, thi-I believe the...
Janet [Interjects.] Oh, there you go, okay.
P. J. Yeah, they pluck a lot up there.
Janet See, that makes sense.
David Pluck 'em.
Bryan So, the uh...
David [Interjects.] Lotta plucking.
Bryan ... Bolin has more of the Earth Kingdom uh, [P. J. affirms.] eyebrows.
Seychelle Rounded.
P. J. I remember for six months, I couldn't say my name.
Bryan That's true.
P. J. Bolin, I was like, "Bowlin'" [Mike laughs.] like "bowling".
Janet "Bowling".
David Couldn't say "water", either. "Water".
P. J. I couldn't say "water".
David [Slurs the words.] "Water Tribe".
Janet [Slurs the words.] "Water", "water".
Bryan "Water".
P. J. [In the accent.] "Water".
David "Water Tribe".
P. J. [In a pronounced Jersey accent.] Water Tribe.
Janet "Water Tribe". [Mike and Seychelle chuckle; Bryan affirms.]
P. J. That's how us-that's the po...
Bryan [Interjects.] New-was that a New Jersey thing? The Wa...
P. J. It's [In an accent.] "water", [David affirms intermittently.] our New Jersey. [Bryan affirms.]
David Got water.
Seychelle [In an accent.] "Our".
David Would...
P. J. [Interjects.] God bless those people from Jersey, I love 'em.
Bryan So, Bolin is from New Jersey. [P. J. affirms; Janet laughs.] Garden State.
P. J. Garden State. I also remember, though, the first...
Janet [Interjects.] Hey, there you go, Garden State earth.
Seychelle Yeah, that makes sense.
P. J. Ehh, there you go. I feed the people, and I eat the food.
David How far behind are we in technology in this world? Like...
P. J. [Brief pause.] Oh wait, I have a question. [Mike and Bryan laugh.] Your arms look...
David [Interjects.] What?
P. J. [Refers to Wu sitting in front of Mako, both of them wearing tanktops that leave their arms exposed.] Oh, wait, it's here. I just wanna say, like, he doesn't look that-that strong, sitting next to the little prince. Is it 'cause the prince [Bryan laughs intermittently.] is making him look tiny?
Mike Wait...
P. J. [In the background.] My bro...
Mike ... who, Mako?
P. J. Yeah, Mako looks kinda wimpy.
Bryan Mako looks pretty buff.
Mike Super buff, what're you talking...
Bryan [Interjects.] What? He's totally buff.
Seychelle I think Bolin's buffer, though.
P. J. Yeah, thank you, that's what I'm getting at.
Seychelle You're welcome.
P. J. Thank you.
Bryan Um, the-it's-it's about, like, the 1930s equivalent, sort of; but they have other, like, you know, we have liberty to kinda...
David [Interjects.] Course, but it's...
Mike [Interjects.] Yeah, we-we drew on some World War II stuff, tech for some later stuff.
David I l-I love that about the show. [Mike affirms.]
Janet Oh, it's so great, [Seychelle affirms.] so great. That was really exciting, the first time we saw Republic City, and...
Seychelle [In the background.] The music.
Janet ... got a sense of what that, yeah, those pieces were gonna be like; it was really, really cool.
A brief pause in commentary until the scene fades in from black to an establishing shot of the cliffside gazebo on Air Temple Island, the sky and clouds behind turned purple as the sun sets.
Mike Alright, so in part two...
Seychelle [In the background.] Beautiful landscape.
Mike ... [Refers to Asami bringing Korra some tea as she rests on the gazebo.] we have the Korra-Asami moment, and, I mean, [Refers to Asami and Tenzin encouraging Korra by detailing all the good she has done in the world, and her own personal development.] mainly focused on Korra's story, and what she's gone through, and-and everything. And this is the more serious [Bryan affirms.] s-part of the show. [Bryan chuckles.]
P. J. Nothing funny in this se...
Mike [Interjects; laughs.] Yeah, [Seychelle chuckles.] there's nothing...
Janet [Interjects.] We'll refrain from saying anything...
Mike ... humorous.
Janet ... jokey.
P. J. We're gonna be very serious. [Janet affirms.] Uh...
Bryan [Interjects; refers to the medium shot of Korra and Asami as they converse about what is affecting the former.] The character models look really good in this section. [Mike affirms; Janet sighs.]
P. J. Great character models.
Bryan [Refers to the lack of musculature on Korra's arms.] Korra's arms, little skinny in that lost shot, [Mike chuckles.] but still, nice drawing.
Janet [In a mock indignant tone.] She's been through a lot, okay?
Bryan [Refers to the medium closeup shot of Korra as she stands in profile, the musculature on her arms being more pronounced.] Well, and then in the next shot, they're-there's-they're right.
Seychelle Aw.
Janet I see.
Bryan Yeah. [Laughs.]
Janet [Laughs.] She went through a lot, and then she was okay...
David [In the background.] And then worked out, real quick.
Janet ... in one frame.
Bryan There's...
P. J. [Interjects.] Well, you guys must look at, and the detail; well, I would...
Janet [In the background.] I would never see that, great point.
P. J. ... never notice like, "oh, her arm's tiny, big."
Bryan Oh man.
P. J. You-I-gosh.
Bryan Drives me...
P. J. [Interjects.] That's hard, that must be hard for you.
Bryan Drives me insane.
P. J. Yeah. [David and Mike chuckle.] That's why he goes to counseling...
Bryan [In the background.] I...
P. J. ... Tuesdays at 3 O'clock.
Bryan ... when I say I'm-when I l-l-say I lie awake at night thinking about this stuff, it's not just a, like, a euphemis-I lie awake at night...
P. J. [In the background.] I imagine.
Bryan ... thinking about inconsistencies between...
David [Interjects.] Huh.
Bryan ... shots, and stuff. [Janet gives an affirming murmur.]
P. J. Oh, man.
Seychelle So many shots.
Bryan [Refers to the sequence of Korra's flashbacks cutting to scenes from several different episodes in Books One, Two, Three, and Four.] You can really see it in, like, because these are from, you know, shots from several years, [David gives an affirming murmur.] and different crews, [P. J. gives an affirming murmur.] and the style evolves, and...
P. J. [Interjects.] Oh wow.
Bryan ... kinda painful.
David [Refers to the scene from "The Revelation", where Amon proclaimed that Lightning Bolt Zolt's bending was gone after he had taken it away.] What's the actor's name who played Amon?
Bryan Steve Blum.
Janet Steve Blum, [David gives an affirming murmur.] so great.
P. J. He's great.
David Love that voice.
Seychelle So good.
P. J. They're all great.
Janet Such a nice guy.
David The nicest. [Seychelle affirms.]
Janet What a silly...
David [In the background.] The nicest guy.
Janet ... sweet guy.
Bryan If only...
Janet [Interjects.] Until he puts on...
Seychelle [In the background.] Yeah, the evil...
Janet ... that voice, and then you're like, "ahh, I'm sorry." [David laughs.]
Bryan Yeah. If only, like, uh, the vocal fry phenomenon, with all the-the young starlets, would sound like Steve Blum, you know? 'Cause he kinda does the, like...
Janet [Interjects.] Oh, the vocal fry, yeah.
Bryan Yeah, he's like, [In a deep, menacing voice.] "Amon."
Janet [In a deep, menacing voice.] "I've been around...
Bryan [In the background.] "Yeah."
Janet ... and I've done things I'm not proud of." [Bryan chuckles.]
P. J. [Laughs.] If you put a mask on, he talks the same way; you just have to put a mask on his face.
Seychelle That's what's freakier about him, is that you can't see his lips move. [Bryan affirms.]
P. J. [Refers to Korra reminiscing about how she was briefly hopeful after she defeated Amon and Equalists.] So much promise. So much hope.
Janet Is it weird that I thought Asami's dad kind of looked like Patrick Stewart with, like, a toupee [Bryan laughs.] and moustache? [Seychelle laughs.]
Bryan D'you ever see that picture of Patrick Stewart with the toupee when they were doing tests for the beginning of Next Generation?
Janet [Gasps.] No!
Bryan They-they were gonna give him a blonde toupee.
Janet Oh my gosh.
Bryan In the photo of him, [Janet laughs.] he's just going like, like, "uh, I don't know," like, [Bryan, Janet, and Seychelle laugh.] luckily, they opted...
Janet [Interjects.] Oh, wow.
P. J. That's amazing.
Bryan ... not to do that.
Janet That's-I need to look that up immediately. [Bryan affirms.] But not here while we're doing commentary, guys; don't worry. [Mike chuckles.]
Bryan Yeah, Hiroshi was based on, you know, Teddy Roosevelt, but also this um...
P. J. [Interjects.] Oh, wow. [Janet affirms.]
Bryan ... this Japanese...
Seychelle [Interjects.] That makes sense.
Bryan ... this Japanese industrialist guy, who looked like Japanese Teddy Roosevelt. So...
David [Interjects.] Huh.
Bryan ... we just kinda...
Janet [Interjects.] Perfect.
Bryan ... combined...
Mike [Interjects.] And he also looks a little bit like Hayao Miyazaki, too.
Bryan Yes, [Mike chuckles.] especially in uh, in the-the later, [Mike affirms.] later episodes.
Janet [Refers to the long shot from "Darkness Falls", where Unalaq and Vaatu forcibly pull Raava out of Korra.] Oh, so great.
P. J. That shot's incredible.
Janet I love Book Two so much, and just...
Seychelle [In the background.] Me, too.
Janet ... the reveal of Vaatu and Raava.
Seychelle [Refers to Korra's past lives dissolving into light as they are destroyed.] So sad. Breaking my heart, man.
Mike Yeah, everyone was very emotionally affected by the-the death of the Avatar, the past lives.
Seychelle I wanna, like, know about every past Avatar. [Mike laughs.] I wanna...
P. J. [Interjects.] I know, it's, like, no joke. [Janet affirms.]
Mike Yeah. That's uh, we're gonna embark on a uh, fifty series, uh...
Bryan [Interjects.] Oh, c'mon. [Janet and David laugh.] Dude.
Mike Drop it.
Seychelle I-I think that's a great idea. [Mike affirms.]
Janet Start immediately; do not rest.
Bryan People...
Mike [Interjects.] That-that is a joke, everyone.
Bryan That was a joke. [Mike laughs.]
Seychelle Aw-aww.
P. J. [Interjects.] big-time joke.
Janet Joke.
P. J. Big-time.
Janet Joke. Call it out, joke, joke, joke, joke.
Seychelle Another heartbreak.
Bryan That's, like, getting, like, ten life sentences. [Mike and Seychelle laugh.]
Janet [In an anguished tone.] Oh! Oh.
P. J. Big fan of the show. Big fan, like a...
Janet Hey, [Janet, Mike, Bryan, and P. J. laugh.] guess it was like prison to us.
Mike Man, the thirty-fifth s-uh, [Bryan and P. J. laugh.] Avatar was not as cool as the thirty-sixth. [Seychelle, Janet, and Bryan laugh.] That's all I gotta say.
Seychelle How many are there? Is there...
Bryan [Interjects.] Uh, we-I-I don't know; like, some of 'em might've just been uh, [Mike affirms.] killed off pretty quick, [Laughs.] you know?
Seychelle Right.
Bryan So...
Mike There could've been at least a thousand, based on...
Bryan [Interjects.] I think we tried...
Mike ... 'cause there was...
Bryan ... doing the math, sometime, but some of 'em lived hundreds of years.
Mike But some, yeah, Kyoshi was, like, over two hundred-years old.
Seychelle Oh my god. [Bryan affirms.]
Mike She-she lived a long time.
P. J. Oh yeah. She looked great. [Bryan, Janet, and Seychelle laugh.]
Mike Yeah, she-she...
P. J. [Interjects.] Looked great. Hi, P. J. Byrne, uh, first-time caller, lifetime listener. [Mike, Bryan, and Seychelle laugh.] Uh...
Janet [Interjects.] P. J., welcome to the show, uh...
P. J. [Interjects.] Great to be here.
Janet Have an answer for a trivia question?
P. J. [Refers to Tenzin's arrow tattoo on his forehead as he advises Korra to learn from her past enemies.] This man has an arrow on his head. Why? [Mike and David laugh.] Why? [Bryan laughs.]
Janet [Refers to the scene from "A Leaf in the Wind", where Korra destroys the rotating training gates while roaring in frustration.] Sometimes, people ask me what the hardest ADR I've done is, and that's-I said I thought that was it. [Mike affirms.]
Bryan Oh, right.
P. J. Oh, that's a great-is a good...
Janet [Interjects.] Remember it was, like, a weird parallel where that was so frustrating for Korra, and then I was like, [In an infuriated tone.] "this is so frustrating [Mike and Seychelle laugh.] for me! [In a tranquil tone.] Be the leaf. [Bryan laughs.] Be the leaf in this ADR recording."
P. J. That's funny.
Bryan [Refers to the shot of Korra's statue standing in the eponymously named park.] We can see that shot in color; I think we only saw it in the, like, sepia tone in 401. [Refers to Korra telling Tenzin and Asami that, no matter how crazy things get, she will always be there to restore balance.] Alright, coming up on the end, here. Well, that was a lovely section.
Mike It was short and sweet.
P. J. Commented a lot on it, we talked about a lot. [Janet chuckles.]
David [Refers to the shot rotating from the gazebo to show the setting sun starting to disappear below the horizon.] And sunset.
P. J. Beautiful. That looked like our LA sunset a couple weeks ago, didn't it?
Mike [Brief pause; refers to when Varrick gives a dramatized, embellished retelling of Bolin's adventures to the fugitives.] Alright, now we got the craziest-probably one of the weirdest, craziest things we've ever done on Avatar or Korra.
Seychelle I love this.
P. J. [Refers to Baraz's thin facial hair along his chin.] I wish I had, like, chin hair like that...
Mike [Interjects.] Uh, but it was super fun...
P. J. [Interjects.] Sorry. [Bryan chuckles.]
Mike [Brief pause.] Yeah, what-what you got there, P. J.?
P. J. I'm sorry, I just wish I had that guy's chin hair.
Mike Oh. [Bryan and Janet laugh.] You-you could-you could rock it, [P. J. affirms.] you could rock it.
P. J. Just seven pieces of chin hair. [Bryan and Seychelle laugh.]
Janet [Laughs.] Pieces.
Mike Yeah, this was-the, yeah, o-once we had this idea...
In the background, Seychelle chuckles as Varrick bounds around the ship while proclaiming that he was devised the greatest story ever made.
Mike ... this kinda sold me on doing the clips episode because I knew we could...
Seychelle [In the background.] That's...
Mike ... make this hilarious, especially with John Michael Higgins. [P. J. and Seychelle affirm.]
David John Michael Higgi-man.
Janet [Interjects.] Major love.
P. J. Let's-c'mon...
David [In the background.] He's...
P. J. ... how amazing is John Michael Higgins?
Janet So amazing.
David He's amazing, and-and-and...
Seychelle [In the background; refers to the scene from "Night of a Thousand Stars", where Bolin tears off his sleeves, revealing his muscular arms.] Oh, he's ripped.
David ... he's so perfectly, for the voice, [Mike affirms.] it just works so perfect! [Janet sighs.]
Bryan When I-when I saw the script for this one, because, you know, we knew we had to fit three of these in twenty-two minutes; at first, we were l-I mean, the word count was insane, [Mike affirms intermittently.] and we were like, "I don't know, man," but then it was like, "oh, John'll rock it." Like, [David laughs.] there's no problem, and he fit all those words in, and we didn't even do, like, the ten-what they call "ten percenting", where you speed it up a little bit, [David gives an affirming murmur.] to the point where you can't really notice. We didn't-we didn't even have to do that. He's just... [Mike affirms.]
P. J. How many times have you done that with me?
Janet How much, yeah.
David Like...
P. J. [Interjects.] How many times have you done that using my character?
Janet No...
David [In the background.] All of us just thought that.
Janet ... because I thought I heard that one time.
Seychelle [Gives an affirming murmur.] Yeah.
David Every...
Janet [Interjects.] I was like, "oh, my voice sounds slightly higher."
David Every single actor in this room, "wait a minute, what?"
Bryan We...
Janet [Interjects.] For sure. For sure, for sure.
Mike We-no, we don't do that.
Bryan We don't do that. [Mike affirms.]
Janet Oh.
David Ah.
Mike They do uh... [Janet laughs.]
Bryan [Interjects.] They do it on other...
Mike [Interjects.] Apparently, they do it on, like, The Simpsons, and stuff, but...
Janet Oh.
Bryan Yeah, we don't do that.
David You uh...
Bryan We just cut P. J.'s lines. [Janet chuckles.]
Mike Yeah. [Mike and Seychelle chuckle; Bryan makes several cutting noises.]
P. J. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Bryan Just the ad-libs, though.
Seychelle Aww.
P. J. Aww.
Bryan No, we use a lot of it.
P. J. Thank you.
Bryan Uh...
David [Interjects.] I like when I hear myself in a walla. [Bryan laughs.] I can-I can-I can call my, "oh, that was me, going..."
Bryan [Interjects.] Yeah. Well, a lotta times what we'll do with those is we'll say, "man, that just sounds like David," [Laughs.] you know? Like, so we'll-we'll...
David [Interjects.] Oh, you can-you can pick 'em out, too? Yeah.
Bryan Yeah, we'll pitch 'em down, or s-or pitch 'em up, or slow 'em down, [Janet gives an affirming murmur.] or speed 'em up a little bit.
David Is it always just me that you [Mike chuckles.] do it...
Bryan [Interjects.] No, no, all of you. We-we hear you guys.
P. J. I was just in Chicago; apparently, they have little Pabus in the zoo, there.
Bryan Aw.
P. J. Like, live Pabus in there.
Bryan [Interjects; refers to P. J.'s audio dipping in volume.] You have to face the microphone.
P. J. I'm sorry, don't, [Bryan, Mike, and Janet laugh.] I like talking-shut up, don't tell me what to do.
Janet First time in a booth, first time in a booth. [Mike chuckles.] P. J. Byrne, everybody.
P. J. Hi, P. J. Byrne, uh, first-time caller, [Janet chuckles.] lifetime listener.
Bryan [Refers to the medium full shot in "A Leaf in the Wind, as Korra looks out at the pro-bending arena.] See, look how different Korra's anatomy is in that drawing.
Janet [Refers to Korra's disproportionately sized head in the shot.] Well, she has a bi-she has [P. J. affirms.] more of a big head, small body in that one.
Bryan Yeah, it's weird.
P. J. That would annoy me, yes.
Bryan [Refers to the long shot of Bolin's slim frame as he weathers the boos of the fugitives.] And Bolin's pretty skinny in this scene. [P. J. affirms.] Although, they're awesome drawings.
P. J. I look like my brother Mako.
Bryan So, Lauren Montgomery storyboarded all the new stuff, a lotta the new stuff, for that episode; hilarious posing on-on Varrick. [Refers to the scene from "A New Spiritual Age", where Korra is washed away through a river in the Spirit World.] You know, I know people like to hate on Book Two, and-and-and there's some good...
Seychelle [Interjects.] What?
P. J. [In an insistent tone.] No.
Bryan ... there's some good uh, there-there...
Janet They do, and someti...
Seychelle [Interjects.] Book Two.
Bryan [Interjects.] You know, some of-here...
Janet [Interjects.] Which, uh, is fine, 'cause the people ask me my favorite, and I'm like, "I mean, I love Book Two," [David chuckles.] and everyone's like, [In a mock skeptical tone.] "really?" [Mike laughs.]
David [In an exaggeratedly enthusiastic tone.] [Expletive.] yeah!
Bryan The, you know, the-the first half of the season, it-it was a little rough, but uh, but man, the col-I mean, the color. I just...
Seychelle [Interjects; refers to the scene from "Harmonic Convergence", where Vaatu looms over Korra, Mako, and Bolin, the sky behind the red-and-black spirit colored vivid shades of purple.] That.
Janet But that's what I love...
Bryan [In the background.] I never worked on anything...
Janet ... is the visuals.
P. J. Look at that, [Seychelle and David affirm.] yes.
Bryan This is the most colorful thing I've ever worked on. I mean, I think I said that in a commentary already, so I'll stop.
Seychelle [Refers to Varrick rhetorically asking Bolin how he thought Zaheer and Vaatu could ever team up; laughs.] That line.
Mike Uh, thi-this is-this is my favorite part, right here.
Everyone laughs as Vaatu answers the ringing phone, greeting the caller with a nonchalant "hello".
David Hilarious.
Bryan And then our uh...
Janet [Refers to Zaheer struggling to contain his laughter as he tells the still-imprisoned Vaatu that he's glad he caught the spirit while he was at home.] Amazing. [P. J. laughs.]
Bryan ... our A-our After Effects guy gave uh, Zahee-even though this is, like...
David [In the background.] Zaheer.
Bryan ... reused footage, [Refers to Zaheer's upturned mouth and eyebrows.] he gave Zaheer this little smile, [David affirms; Seychelle chuckles.] and uh, it's pretty-'cause to match Henry's read.
David Goof-goofy Zaheer.
Mike Well, it's so funny 'cause, like, 'cause, uh, Henry Rollins is so, you know, he took Zaheer's character very seriously, and, you know, did a great job, but when he came in for this one, he was-he was a little confused at first, like, what was going on. [Bryan chuckles.] And it-but then he got it, but he-but he put the same kind of, like...
Bryan [In the background.] Intensity.
Mike ... "what's my motivation of this guy? So, he's kind," he's like, "so, he's kinda, like, messing with Vaatu? [Bryan and Janet laugh.] Alright, alright, I can do," yeah, like...
P. J. [Interjects.] That's hysterical.
Janet That's great.
Mike Yeah, like, he-he took it uh, he...
David [In the background.] He...
Mike ... did a great little-little take on it.
David He's a serious dude. [Mike affirms.]
Bryan [Refers to Varrick mentioning how Bolin was the world's greatest ladies man, with the sequence cutting between moments of respective relationships with Ginger, Eska, and Opal.] So, we got the recap of-of Bolin's love affairs.
P. J. Ah, my journey.
Seychelle gives a disconcerted murmur after the scene cuts away from the moment in "Light in the Dark" where Eska kisses Bolin.
Bryan Not-not just Mako's; so, we-we get to revisit...
P. J. [Interjects.] All the single ladies. [Janet chuckles; refers to the scene from "Civil Wars, Part 2", where Eska rushes toward Bolin on a tidal wave.] She scared me, legit.
Seychelle Crazy. [Bryan chuckles.]
P. J. Legitimately scared me; it wasn't acting. [Imitating and referring to Bolin longingly saying Opal's name as her introductory scenes from "The Metal Clan" play out.] Opal. [Janet and Mike laugh.]
Bryan So, you know the uh, the-the ship name for-for Opal and Bolin is "Bopal". [Janet affirms.]
P. J. No, no... [Bryan chuckles.]
David [In the background.] Wow.
P. J. ... talk in the mic, [Mike chuckles.] oh, I love that. Aww.
David Wow.
Janet "Bopal". I saw a really great...
P. J. [In the background.] I'm so glad-sorry.
Janet ... at the last con that I was, I just saw a-a really, really great Opal cosplay; it was the first one I'd seen...
P. J. [In the background.] Oh really?
Janet ... and she looked amazing, yeah.
Bryan Yeah, I saw an amazing one online.
Janet And a Pema.
Bryan Oh really?
Janet There was a Pema, yeah.
Bryan Cool, cool.
Seychelle Oh, that's awesome.
Janet It was an actual pregnant girl.
Bryan Oh, that's cool.
Janet It was so cute, yeah.
Seychelle Awesome.
P. J. I'm so glad that's who he ends up with is Opal; she, like, per-is a perfect match for him. [Mike gives an affirming murmur.] Perfect.
Mike Yeah, she's nice.
David chuckles as Varrick mentions, his voice layered over the scene from "Peacekeepers" where he hangs himself upside-down, how there is only one thing Bolin needs to do to save the Avatar from "the Fearsome Foursome".
Bryan She also doesn't take his crap, which I like.
P. J. Yeah, it's great. [Mike chuckles; Seychelle affirms.]
Bryan She-she uh, calls him out...
P. J. [Interjects.] Yeah, which is awesome.
Bryan ... on his...
Janet [Interjects; in a mock petulant tone.] At least someone...
Seychelle [In the background.] Feels real.
Janet ... ends up with someone. [P. J. chuckles.] Just kidding. [Mike and P. J. chuckle.]
Seychelle Tell me about it.
P. J. You don't know... [Janet and Mike laugh.]
Bryan Don't you guys worry.
P. J. You'll be fine.
Seychelle [Refers to Varrick detailing how the fictional Bolin taught the airbender army how to balance on sticks as the scene plays from "Original Airbenders"; laughs.] "Balancing on stick..."
Bryan Seriously, I can't believe how mu-how many words he... [Mike affirms.]
David [Interjects.] Oh. [Janet affirms.]
Bryan ... he-he squeezed into this.
P. J. Did have to ten percent it; there's a thing we call ten percent... [Mike, David, and Bryan laugh.]
Janet [Interjects.] Did not have to ten percent it.
Bryan Man, he...
P. J. [Interjects.] My heart dropped when you said that. What? [Janet laughs; refers to the scene from "The Metal Clan", where Opal tells Bolin to just be himself.] Opal. [Bryan, Janet, Seychelle laugh; refers to a shot of Bolin as he looks at Opal.] I have beautiful eyes; [Refers to the reverse shot of Opal as she looks at Bolin.] so-oh, so does Opal. Geez Loui-we're gonna have...
Seychelle [In the background; refers to Bolin and Opal's green eyes.] It's their Earth Kingdom...
P. J. ... grea-our kids are gonna have great eyes. [David affirms.]
Janet Your "Bopals" are gonna be adorable. [Bryan laughs.]
P. J. Yeah, like, we have the cutest-eyed babies.
Bryan I like that, that, like, the-the offspring...
Janet [Interjects.] Are called a ship name?
Bryan ... from a-a ship, is a-they're-they're just plural. [Janet affirms; David chuckles.] "Bopals". "We-we made a few 'Bopals'."
Janet Yeah. [Laughs.]
Bryan [Refers to Varrick posing as if he were a bird, leaning forward with his lips puckered, one splayed hand placed over his head to imitate plumage, while the other rests on his arched back.] That-that pose is amazing. We're-that...
P. J. [Interjects.] That is amazing.
Seychelle Beautiful.
Bryan That's all Lauren Montgomery's...
P. J. [Interjects.] He talks, like, leaning over a lot, too, [Bryan affirms.] which I love about his character. He's a great lean talker.
Janet [Laughs; refers to the scene from "The Sting", where Juji pokes his head out of a snow drift.] Ohh.
P. J. The "Pabu out of the snow" bit, it was great.
Seychelle and Bryan snort in amusement as Varrick puts dramatic emphasis on Bolin's name as he describes how the earthbender taught the airbenders to make a giant tornado during the clip from "Venom of the Red Lotus".
Janet [Refers to when Varrick off-handedly mentioned that he will have a focus group come up with a name for the antagonistic group in his story about Bolin.] Yeah, did you guys have to go through a focus group when you made your...
Bryan [In the background.] They o...
Janet ... any of your shows?
Bryan Only once.
Mike Yeah, they di-but not in a way that was gonna affect whether it was gonna be a show or not. Like...
Janet [In the background.] Gotcha.
Mike ... in the, like, they-they sh-they did focus group, like, the first couple episodes, I think, when they were done. Um, [Janet chuckles.] and I think overall, kids were like, "yeah, love it."
Janet Great.
Bryan That was so we could...
Mike [Interjects.] And-and boys didn't mind that it-Korra was a girl.
P. J. That's awesome.
Bryan They...
Janet [Interjects.] They "didn't mind". [P. J. affirms.]
Bryan No, no, they-here's the story.
Mike Like, they were cool with it.
Janet I know, I know.
Bryan They had to-they had to-they tested it because we were asking for s-Books Three and Four to get picked up, but we hadn't even premiered Book One yet, and so they were-but they were scared that she was a girl, and so they did a test audi-you know, a test fo-a focus group thing, and none of the boys brought it up, and it scored really high, and they had to ask like, "so, uh, huh, what do you think that she's a girl?" and they're like, "so?"
P. J. [Laughs.] Nice.
David Nice.
Janet Yeah! That's what I'm talking about.
Bryan They're, like, sh-they just said, "she's awesome, who cares?"
Seychelle Way.
Bryan And that was it! And so after that, they let us-they picked up Books Three and Four.
P. J. That's awesome.
Mike Uh...
Janet [Interjects; refers to the scene from "Light in the Dark", where Korra spiritbends UnaVaatu, dissolving him into bits of light.] I just wanna shoutout this scene, because it reminded me of original Tron, and I'm a huge... [Mike chuckles.]
David [In the background.] Whoa.
Janet ... original Tron nerd. Um, I got real excited, I was like, "that's like when Sark-okay guys, I should shut up now, I'm a big nerd."
Mike [Refers to the dragon bird spirit from "A New Spiritual Age" having the upper half of Bolin's head overlayed over its face as it swoops down to save Korra.] So, it's hard to tell here, but Bolin's face is on that bird. [Bryan and Mike laugh.]
Seychelle It is?
Mike Yeah. [Bryan affirms.] You uh, there's a bird Bolin, it's pretty awesome.
P. J. Really? [Seychelle laughs.]
Bryan He's...
P. J. [Interjects.] Oh, I love that.
Bryan He's a Bolin bird.
David [Laughs.] It's like...
Seychelle [Interjects.] Get a tattoo of bird Bolin.
Mike Alright, so, coming up on the end, guys, sorry to say.
David Aww.
P. J. Aww.
Bryan Thanks for...
Mike [In the background.] In fact...
Bryan ... the journey.
Mike ... we've-we've had an awesome time with all of you. It's...
P. J. [Interjects.] We do, we love you.
Mike ... it's been beautiful.
P. J. No joke.
Seychelle Coolest thing I've ever done.
Mike No way.
Bryan You know, this...
David [Interjects; refers to Varrick telling a stressed out Bolin to never let the truth get in the way of a good story.] I love this. [Janet laughs.] "Never...
Bryan [In the background.] We...
David ... let the truth get in the way of a good story." [Laughs.]
Janet That's my-my uh...
Mike [Brief pause.] We're still...
