Kachingwe was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and named "Tinashe" Jorgensen, which means "We are with God" in Shona, by her grandfather. She spent her early years in DeKalb, Illinois, as a baby model with her two younger brothers, Thulani and Kudzai, but moved to Los Angeles, California, when she was eight.

At age fourteen, Kachingwe was approached by former pop-star Vitamin C to join an all-girl singing and dancing group. She quickly joined Allie Gonino, Hayley Kiyoko, Marisol Esparza, and Kelsey Saunders, later replaced by Lauren Hudson in 2009, to form the Stunners. The group soon signed with Columbia Records and released a single titled Bubblegum to iTunes along with the official video for the single, and contributed a song to the iCarly soundtrack.

On March 16, 2011, Kachingwe announced that she was now pursuing a solo career and working on a solo album. Since her departure, the band has separated. She also announced via her official Twitter page that she would be singing the theme song to the CW show Shedding for the Wedding. On April 6, 2011, her debut solo single Chainsaw, produced by The Cararacs, was leaked online.

Kachingwe worked on her debut studio album, Aquarius in 2014, which was released on October 7. She has recorded in Los Angeles, London, Atlanta, New York, and Toronto. Kachingwe has been working with several producers, including Clams Casino, Ryan Hemsworth, Stuart Matthewman, DJ Mustard, T-Minus, Mike Will Made It, Boi-1da, Fisticuffs, Best Kept Secret, and Ritz Reynolds.

On January 13, 2014, Kachingwe released "2 On", a song featuring American rapper Schoolboy Q and produced by DJ Mustard, as the first single from her debut album. The song entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 89 and has since peaked at number 24. On June 29, 2014, Kachingwe made her national television debut, performing her hit single "2 On" at the BET Awards pre-show and also announced that her anticipated debut album would officially be released on October 7, 2014. She spoke about the theme of the album and said "It combines the essence of all my previous work. I've stayed true to who I am. Obviously, there's some progression as I've grown as an artist, and I'm influenced by new things and what not. I think my fans will be really happy with it. I think it really embodies who I am and where I am creatively right now." The second single, "Pretend", featuring Harlem rapper ASAP Rocky, was released on August 22 and the music video premiered in October. "Aquarius" debuted at number 17 on  theBillboard 200. She was also featured on Nick Jonas' "Jealous" remix, Calvin Harris' "Dollar Signs" and Usher's "Body Language".

In late January 2015, Kachingwe was reported to be working with "Prescription Songs" writers and producers and Taylor Parks on her upcoming second studio album. On February 16, Ty Dollar $ign's song Drop That Kitty that features Kachingwe and English pop artist Charli XCX was released.
