Spirit Emblem

Tien is a spirit who frequently made visits to the nuns at the Western Air Temple. It continued to wander the halls of the temple after the Air Nomad Genocide, often trying to play airball with benders who came to the temple.[1]

History[]

Tien has frequented the Western Air Temple for almost as long as the temple has existed. It enjoyed participating in all the nuns' activities, such as meditation, playing airball, and trying the sky bison obstacle course. The Air Nomads wrote down some records of Tien's visits, and kept them in the Great Library.[2]

In the 90s AG, a group of Earth Kingdom rebels and refugees arrived at the temple after being chased by the Fire Nation. Tien started flinging oranges at the benders in the group, in an attempt to start a game of airball with them.

Tien came across Jianjun in a hall of statues, with the woman quietly planting a small device that would split a support column. The spirit took an interest in Jianjun's actions. It threw an orange at her, knowing she was a firebender, but unaware that she was a spy and was trying to hide her bending from the rest of the group. While Jianjun was placing the charge, Woong and Xinyan wandered into the hall. Jianjun pretended to fear Tien, and called out to the others to run. Tien became offended by Jianjun staring at it.

As the group fled, Jianjun triggered the charge she had placed. The passage leading to the elevator collapsed, and several Air Nun statues that memorialized Tien's old friends were toppled. Tien realized the spy was trying to destroy its home, and stopped being friendly with her. Jianjun used Tien as a scapegoat for the tunnel collapse. Woong helped to legitimize her story, as he was terrified by seeing a spirit for the first time. Rebels and refugees soon began to turn their heads away from Tien when it approached. Jianjun also told the others that Tien's habit of throwing oranges were acts of aggression.

With its dislike of Jianjun firmly established, Tien often scowled at at the spy throughout her time at the Western Air Temple. It also started to pull pranks on her, such as tying her boots together, or shrinking to hide in her pouch, spook her, and disappear.[1]

Physical description[]

Tien is green and yellow, and resembles the chimera of a koala and a goat. It usually stands at 3', though it is able to actively change its own height.

While Tien is able to understand human language, it does not have the ability to speak. It is able to communicate with humans through gestures and mime. It has the ability to intuit which humans can bend. It knows that each element is different, but it assumes that waterbenders, earthbenders, and firebenders are able to play airball in the same way airbenders can.[1]
