  • I've been rereading some of the Graphic Novels recently - specifically the hardcover, library editions. For those who don't know, these editions (which combine all three parts of a specific title into one volume), have a ton of notes from the creators, writers, and illustrators written in the margins. They talk about soruces of inspiration, give clues about the characters, and sometimes are just funny.

    One thing that's been mentioned in these notes a few times is the comparison between members of Team Avatar to characters in The Avenegers by Marvel Comics. Sokka has been compared to Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, and Toph to Bruce Banner, a.k.a. The Incredible Hulk. Maybe it's due to the recent release of Avengers: Infinity War on DVD/Blu-Ray, but I thought it would be fun to continue this process and see how characters from these two franchises share qualities.

    When making these comparisions, I will do my best to adhere to the following informal scheme: official members of Team Avatar will only be matched with characters who were actual members of The Avengers, not just associates (to the best of my knowledge, as I hardly have a PhD in superhero history). In the same vein, supporting characters in the Avatar world will be matched with more loosely associated members of the Avengers Team.

    This will be an ongoing project, and obviously not all comparisons will come to me at once, so please focus your comments (as much as possible) only on comparisons that have already been made. Finally, I would like to emphasize that this forum is BASED ON MY OWN OPINIONS AND DOES NOT CONSITUTE ANYTHING OFFICIAL. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions:

    Sokka = Hawkeye

    Sozin = Ultron

    Suki = Black Widow

    Toph = The Incredible Hulk

    • I've seen people compare Asami Sato to Tony Stark and I can see why.

      I know what you mean. At some point in the future, I may do a version of this for the Legend of Korra crew, and that's one parallel that's already occured to me. For now, though, I'm sticking with the original Team.

      I thought this was for both versions of Team Avatar, not just on ATLA Team Avatar.

      As I said, I may do a Korra version eventually, but for now - to avoid confusion/multiple comparisons for the same characters - I'm sticking with the original Team.

      Fair enough.

    • What about the X-Men? In a sense, the benders and mutants have something in common after all.

      Yeah, I definitely agree with that (I've compared bending ability to mutant powers in another forum). Maybe that's an idea for a another discussion in the future.

    • Iroh = Odin

      Troubled past, Close relationship to Thor/Zuko. Basically one the most powerful/spritual people in the universe.

      And he had a Spirit World-like departure in Ragnarok. It's a thought. Thanks for sharing.
