Lady Sulan was a member of the Keohso clan, the wife of Fire Lord Chaeryu and mother to Fire Lord Zoryu.[3]

History

During his adolescence, Chaeryu had fallen in love with Lady Huazo of the Saowon clan, who he had kept as a mistress. However, the Saowon clan was much weaker than it eventually became, and Huazo was not well-received in the capital. Chaeryu became convinced that he could do better than Huazo.[3]

Sulan hailed from the Keohso clan, the traditional rivals of the Saowon. She was introduced to Chaeryu at a garden party at the royal palace, and the prince fell for Sulan as soon as he laid eyes upon her. Almost immediately, Chaeryu began indulging Sulan with a certain smile he had only reserved for Huazo.[2]

Shortly after the party, Huazo was set aside, and Chaeryu resolved to marry Sulan. However, to the Fire Lord’s embarrassment, Huazo subsequently revealed she was pregnant with Chaeryu’s son. As the Fire Lord could not dishonor Huazo or her clan, the child, Chaejin, was acknowledged as his son, although would be excluded from the royal family.[3]

As Chaeryu's wife and Fire Lady, Sulan was considered lovely and wonderful by all. However, Huazo believed her to be hopelessly naive. She intended to name her son Zoryu, even though the zo character was traditionally only used by the Saowon clan. However, she only wished to use the name because she thought it sounded nice, rather than offending the Saowon.[2]

Sulan died giving birth to Zoryu.[3] Her son eventually acceded to the throne, though his rule would be challenged by Chaejin during the Camellia-Peony War.[4]
