Rust is a spirit which was drawn to stores of meteorite metal in the Fire Nation.[1]
History[]
Rust was drawn to the physical world after the Fire Nation piled a huge amount of meteorite metal together, and was attracted by the delicious smell.[2] They were orbiting around the metal, appearing and disappearing at will, and following it wherever it went. Once Rust arrived at the Four Nations Summit & Technological Symposium, they were curious about what was happening and decided to observe. It had been a long time since they came to the physical world, but they were largely disappointed by the scheming and greed that they saw.[1] Rust was discovered by an Air Nomad technologist named Sumati, who cared for Rust and worried what would happen to them if the crate of meteorite ore was destroyed or forged. Sumati made offerings to Rust, finding them beautiful and wondrous, and was prepared to lose her position at the summit by protecting Rust.[3][4]
As the summit progressed, the spirit took on the negative energy of the attendants. Everyone was distrustful of one another, angry, and on the brink of fighting. Each time someone took a violent or massively aggressive action against another person, Rust was affected by chaos and doubled in size, and they threatened to turn into a dark spirit if the situation was not resolved.[1]
Physical description[]
Rust was a tiny spirit who appears as a shimmering, translucent elderly humanoid, albeit only a foot tall. Their name comes from the fact that their skin and their clothes appear to be made out of orange rust flakes. However, they could grow in size if they were affected by violence and negativity.[1]
