The Rising Flame Triad is an organized crime unit in Republic City run by Xiaolan.[1] The group consists of many firebenders, as well as people of proud Fire Nation heritage.[1][2]

History[]

The Rising Flame Triad is considered one of the weaker triads in Republic City, mostly running numbers and managing the Lucky Cranefish Gambling House.[1] Two parents of Fire Nation heritage had dealings with the triad and left their daughter, Samten, with the mobsters to pay off a debt and never came back for her. Samten eventually escaped from the clutches of the Rising Flames, learning to fight with a staff along the way.[2]

Due to their weak position, the Rising Flames quickly fell under Tokuga's efforts to unify everyone under the Triple Threat Triad. However, after his insurrection failed, the Triple Threats were significantly weakened, and the Rising Flames saw a chance to claim their independence and push back against the rest of the triads.

The Rising Flames respect their charming and confident leader, Xiaolan, who they chose for her lightningbending abilities and grand ambitions, but were less patient than her in wanting to see the triad expand and rise up the food chain.[1] They began keeping a close eye on Juniper Kim's laboratory, as they knew the former Earth Empire scientist had weapons there, as well as spirit energy canisters, which would be a perfect opportunity to show everyone that they meant business.[1][3] Skoochy took note of their activities, and two weeks after they were seen scoping out the laboratory, the canisters were stolen. The Rising Flame Triads were suspects in the theft, as well as Yoshiro's Equalists and the Peace Lily Society. Aside from their recent interest in laboratory, there was word on the street that the Rising Flames were offloading "very hot goods very fast to the right buyer", and one of Juniper and Asami's investigators found a hip flask with the Rising Flame's symbol at the scene of the crime.[3]

Organization[]

Like many triads, the Rising Flames are under the authority of a respected leader, Xiaolan.

Many of their members are quick-witted, sociable, and nondescript, making them consummate spies and information brokers. Some of them quietly work at the Lucky Cranefish gambling tables as dealers or as wait staff, gathering rumors and passing messages between patrons. In a fight, when push comes to shove, they use their firebending to trick and trip up opponents.

All members of the Rising Flames carry hip flasks with distinctive flames when they join the triad, tucked into their vests and jackets. This is awarded to them by Xiaolan after they join.[1][3]

Headquarters[]

The Rising Flame Triad operate the Lucky Cranefish Gambling House, which is well-regarded as a place and frequented by both shadier citizens of Republic City and rebellious socialites. An iconic painted sign featuring a plump, jovial cranefish holding coins and chopsticks greets visitors as they approach. The Lucky Cranefish has gambling tables for high rollers and thrillseekers, fine dining (with separate booths), as well as live music and dancing.

The Rising Flame Triad conducts their business out of private rooms on the upper levels. The establishment is the primary source of income for the triad.[4]
