The Peace Lily Society is a non-violent anti-war and anti-military movement and organization. The Society has members from all nations, though it is primarily based in Republic City.[1]
History[]
The Peace Lily Society formed in response to the numerous conflicts of the early 170s AG, especially the wars in the Earth Kingdom up to and including the invasion of the United Republic of Nations. During the rise of the Earth Empire, the Society organized sit-ins and protests to raise awareness, and they protested just as hard when the United Forces were called up.
After the war, the Peace Lily Society began to protest the repurposing of war technology, calling it exploitation of the suffering of others and pointing to the damage it had caused.[1] They began expanding their rhetoric to speak out the dangers of spirit energy and Earth Empire technology, and a number of the most anxious and impassioned Peace Lilies began protesting outside the laboratory of Juniper Kim, a former Earth Empire scientist who wished to develop peacetime uses for their war technology, as they believed she was up to no good. Their leader, Metog, led many direct protests outside the laboratory, insisting that action had to be done to remove the weapons if the authorities would not do it. They also began holding rallies at Avatar Korra Park about the dangers of re-purposing weapons, and won over some concerned citizens.[2]
A few weeks after the protests began, spirit energy canisters went missing from Juniper's laboratory. The Peace Lilies were among the suspects for the theft, as well as the Rising Flame Triad and Yoshiro's Equalists. Their recent activity was a point of suspicion, as well as the fact that the scientists at the laboratory were taken out by non-lethal means.[2]
Organization[]
The Peace Lily Society is primarily made up of student activists and philosophers. Many of them are young and idealistic, but more overzealous than most. They are easily identified by the stylized lily pins that their members wear.
The group includes members from all nations, and they all have different types of training and expertise. However, their principles mean that should they become confronted in a fight, they mostly use their defensive martial arts to deflect or redirect an opponent's strike, to avoid causing harm.[1]
The Society's leadership is elected, and the members have currently chosen Metog, a former university leader. She has gone a step further than the rest of the Peace Lilies by swearing off all worldly possessions and only using what is donated to her.[3]
