Oogi is a flying bison owned by Tenzin and his family.[2] He is a descendant of a group of flying bison found by Avatar Aang after the species was thought to be extinct due to the Air Nomad Genocide.

History[]

170 AG[]

Oogi carried Tenzin and his family as they traveled to the Southern Water Tribe to meet Korra, at which point Tenzin informed her that he would be unable to train her due to his responsibilities in Republic City. Oogi was also used to fly the family back to Air Temple Island.[2]

Oogi later flew Tenzin and Korra back to Air Temple Island under the command of the airbending master.[3]

When Korra went missing, Tenzin, Lin Beifong, and Team Avatar used Oogi to search for her.[4]

Following an assault of the island by Equalist forces and the birth of Tenzin and Pema's fourth child, Rohan, the entire family fled their home on the trusty sky bison.[5]

Following the defeat of Amon and the Equalists, Oogi traveled to the Southern Water Tribe along with all of Team Avatar and Tenzin's family. He slept peacefully in front of Katara's house.[6]

171 AG[]

Oogi traveled with Tenzin, his family, and Korra by steamship back to the Southern Water Tribe six months later, so they could all attend the Glacier Spirits Festival. After Korra denounced Tenzin as her spiritual mentor in favor of her uncle, Unalaq, Oogi carried Tenzin and his family toward the Southern Air Temple,[7] and later toward the Eastern Air Temple for their family vacation.[8]

Oogi being attacked

Weighed down by dark spirits, Oogi could not stay aloft and made a crash landing near the South Pole.

When Harmonic Convergence drew near, Oogi flew the family back to Republic City and subsequently joined them to travel to the Southern Water Tribe by ship.[9] When the flying bison tried to bring Bumi, Kya, Tenzin, and Korra close enough to the South Pole, they were attacked by a multitude of dark spirits. Although his passengers tried to defend him, they could not prevent dark spirits from latching on to him, weighing him down. Unable to stay aloft, Oogi crash landed, throwing his passengers. He later flew back to the Southern Water Tribe compound with Asami Sato, Tonraq, Naga, and Pabu, leaving his master and his friends to venture into the Spirit World.[1]

Following Harmonic Convergence, Oogi joined Team Avatar in their quest to gather new airbenders to revive the Air Nation. As the group departed Republic City on their Future Industries airship, Oogi stood with Naga on the upper deck to let their tongues hang in the air.[10]

Oogi later participated with Team Avatar's rescue of airbenders from Ba Sing Se, soaring by the Earth Queen's Temple to catch Korra and Tenzin before doubling back to rescue Mako, Bolin, Jinora and Kai.[11]

At the Northern Air Temple, Tenzin used Oogi as a demonstration for what one could accomplish upon mastery of the control of a sky bison. Later, after Jinora and several calves were captured by bison rustlers, Oogi, at his master's direction, rammed into Ganbat's getaway truck while Kai was lifted onto his back. He later landed to corner the leader.[12]

When the Red Lotus attacked the Northern Air Temple, Oogi and the other bisons fled away. After the attack, Oogi reunited with Tenzin, who escaped with Mako, Bolin, and Asami from the destruction of the air temple.[13] Soon after, Oogi carried Tenzin and the others, with Kai guiding them to the caves where Korra and the airbenders had been taken captive by the Red Lotus. Upon reaching the cave, Oogi was left outside with his master and Lefty while the others rescued the airbenders.[14]

174 AG[]

Oogi carried Korra, Tenzin, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, Kai, and Ryu into the Spirit World, where they hoped to be able to reason with the spirits. Discovering the flower field the spirit portal led to destroyed, Oogi touched down and let everyone off his back. Their visit was cut short, however, as the vines of the scorched spirit flowers started to attack. After Meelo rode up his tail using the air scooter technique, Oogi took to the sky and flew out of the Spirit World.[15]
