Onomu was a Fire Army General who served in the Hundred Year War. After facing death for criticizing Fire Lord Ozai's plan to conquer Omashu, she tried to defect to the Earth Kingdom.

History[]

Onomu grew up on the Fire Islands, attending school and absorbing her country's propaganda before enlisting in the Fire Nation military.[1] She served at the frontlines in the Great War, rising to some prominence in the Fire Nation colonies. She committed war crimes and many in the Earth Kingdom came to deeply hate her.[2] At one rural earth Kingdom settlement, Onomu ordered her troops to seize food and medical supplies, leaving many locals to suffer. The eventual leader of the Armadillo Bears insurgents, Ben Ta, suffered a personal loss due to the requisitioning and swore vengeance.[3]

Following the ascension of Ozai to the throne, Onomu was called to take part in one of the Fire Lord's war councils.[2] At the meeting, Ozai outlined his intention to conquer Omashu. Convinced that this was a vanity project which would only waste important resources,[1] she voiced her opposition to the plan. Overwhelmed by her ego, Onomu exchanged "terse words" with the Fire Lord,[2] believing that the other officers present would support her. Upon noticing that no one backed her up[1] and realizing that her criticism of Ozai had effectively marked her for death, the general retreated as soon as possible. She promptly fled the Fire Nation Capital, stealing secret war plans before going into exile.[2]

Onomu was able to reach the colonies where she contacted Grand Secretariat Long Feng, the Earth Kingdom's de facto ruler, offering the war plans in exchange for asylum in Ba Sing Se. The Grand Secretariat ostensibly agreed to the deal, and tasked a group of adventures with escorting her through the Earth Kingdom.[2] However, Ozai hired the Rough Rhinos to track her down and eliminate or capture her, while Earth Kingdom rebels like the Armadillo Bears who heard of her escape intended to murder her in revenge for her actions as army commander. In addition, Long Feng was actually only interested in the military plans, and had no intention whatsoever to allow Onomu to enter Ba Sing Se alive.[2]

Onomu met the group that Long Feng had hired at West Heiatu;[2] it included Xinyi, Nalu, Lana, Zimo, and Xiao.[4] In order to reach Ba Sing Se at all, the group had to move from West Heiatu to So Bai Oasis, then through Xiadi and Laoshan, and finally a Dai Li outpost near the Earth Kingdom capital.[2]

Personality[]

Onomu was a proud and boisterous woman with a considerable ego.[1][2] Though intelligent,[1] she was very self-centered and self-confident to the point of arrogance, and was often rude to others.[5] Despite being patriotic, Onomu put her own survival over her loyalty to the Fire Nation.[1][5]

As a Fire Army officer, Onomu fully believed the Fire Nation's propaganda about the war serving to improve the world. As a result, she believed that the means justified the ends, and that the other nations should be grateful for the Fire Nation's efforts to "liberate" them.[1][5]

Abilities[]

Onomu was a firebender, and capable of the deliberate breath of fire.[1]
