When Appa defended himself and the rest of Team Avatar with his massive tail from an attacking wolf spirit, the spirit released a swarm of moth wasps from his mouth, which quickly surrounded the individual members of Team Avatar. The moth wasps made it difficult for Katara to breathe and covered Sokka's arm so that he could not see it anymore. However, Azula quickly shot a bolt of lightning that the moth wasps pursued, leaving Team Avatar alone.
The moth wasp has glowing pink wings with an image of a face on them, identical to the face image on the wolf spirit's chest and the expression Avatar Aang made when he felt the presence of the wolf spirit. It also two white, feathery antennae; a brown head with two round, black eyes on the sides; and black pincers. Its body has two sections: the first section, which is a yellow color, is where its black legs extend out. The second section is striped yellow and black.
The moth wasps often surround the object they are targeting, causing the target to either have trouble breathing or cause an illusion that certain body parts have disappeared.
Also, the moth wasps are attracted to light, as exemplified when they followed Azula's bolt of lightning.
The moth wasp is a combination of its namesakes: the moth and the wasp. It has the wings and antennae of a moth, but the body of a wasp.
- Because Kawano and Sasaki, the chief artists for the trilogy's designer, Gurihiru, are both afraid of moths, it was frightening for them to draw the moth wasps for The Search Part One.
