Firebender Fire Nation emblem

Mio was a trusted bodyguard of Fire Lord Sozin who was given charge of a group of firebenders posing as Air Nomads who planned to disrupt a pre-wedding symposium held by Princess Zeisan.[1]

History[]

Given the opportunity to plan events prior to her royal wedding to Monk Khandro, Princess Zeisan planned to host a symposium where she would discuss the Guiding Wind's teachings and deliver a refutation of the Fire Lord's xenophobic propaganda.[2] Well aware of Zeisan's plans, Sozin tacitly approved of Minister Zianda's plot to disrupt the event and discredit the Air Nomads in the Fire Nation. Zianda put Mio in charge of a team of firebenders, who were to attack nobles while espousing anti-nobility and xenophobic anti-Fire Nation propaganda.[2] They did not want to kill or even harm anyone present, but only make it look as if the Guiding Wind was attacking. Mio and Zianda selected the most loyal firebenders from the Fire Nation army for the plot.[3]

Mio developed several clever devices to allow the group to pretend to be airbenders, and equipped them with gliders that they could firebend into and mimic an airbender staff unfolding into a glider. There were also additional tanks that allowed them to create bursts of hot air, allowing them to simulate an Air Nomad attack.[2] The canisters of gas needed were not small, and they needed Air Nomad robes to hide them on their bodies as well as look the part.[3] In the week leading up to the planned attack, the conspirators stole Air Nomad clothing, either directly from the drying line or with masked assailants in the city's alleys stealing it from them, but mostly leaving the Air Nomads unharmed.[2]

On the day of the symposium, Mio's group readied themselves as they wore neutral clothing, since needed to find one more set of Air Nomad clothes before the attack. Minister Zianda then handed them a scroll that gave them the location of an Air Nomad, and directed them to be at the symposium at a specific time. Unbeknownst to Zianda and Mio's group, however, this meeting was noticed by four of Rioshon's agents: Nyanchi, Boin, Ezra, and Zeebee. After the meeting, Mio's group planned to find the set of clothes and then head back to Hari Bulkan to attack the symposium, using back alleys, shortcuts, and help from other conspirators to move through the city at speed.[4]

Personality[]

Mio was completely loyal to Fire Lord Sozin, and was driven to serve him at all costs. She wanted to bring down Princess Zeisan just as much as her co-conspirator, Zianda, even though she was not loyal to him directly.[3]

Abilities[]

Mio was adept at disguise, as she often wore a mask that covered her entire face. As the mask was her most identifiable trait, Mio could pass in the Fire Nation Capital without being noticed or identified whenever she did not wear it. She was also a skilled firebender who often wielded fire as knives and lashing out with fire in whip-like movements.[3]

Trivia[]

  • When Sozin was still a prince, he mused that he preferred strong women as companions and bodyguards.[5] Mio fits this pattern.
