The White Lotus Sentinel was one of the greatest things to happen to Avatar Wiki but yes, it retired permanently in 2015 and became integrated into the BSST instead. So you were a WLS goer, I take it! Have we met in another era?
Thanks for converting here from Discord for the sake of well, the newsletter staff you could say? xD
I am SO sorry, I didn't realize I never replied to this! February honestly still feels like a week ago actually...oh dear, my apologies again.
But yes, I've been as well as one might be during a groovy pandemic quarantine xD The BSST has been on fire and so has my activity! I hope you're still poking around to see this. You probably can catch me on Discord more often these days so, hope to be in touch soon!
And I'm always lurking. xD The groovy pandemic quarantine has resulted in my being laid off (no worries I don't miss it) so I have lots of time to kill these days.
I did see that BSST is still going on but I've yet to check it out. I pop over here once in a while, usually after a new comic release, that way I can keep in the know on the story. But more or less I spend most of my time over on the Disney wiki.
So given your bio, profile pic, banner above your message wall, and what, 200k fic, I figured you would be the right person to come to when asking for advice on how to write something about the Dai Li. It's not going to be fully in-universe, but close enough, and I'm just asking for general advice, what pitfalls to avoid, stuff I should absolutely include, if there is any such thing. And if there is no such thing, then just consider this me saying hi.
Hi there! Oh wow, it's rare for me to get an opportunity to ramble about the wondrous joy of writing about the Dai Li :P
Key points: They're silent. Precise. Very synchronized and almost clone-like in combat. (And to quote Kyoshi, feared by all.) Right off the bat, one would get the impression that they're ominous and are always watching.
Pitfalls: Making them talk exactly alike lol. Clone-like movements don't mean they're the same people inside. There's always room for little gestures that give away differences in personalities, like maybe one guy is more cruel than another or one enjoys punishing while another is just following orders. But no one gets emotional, at least not on the outside. (Think of their reaction to being banished by princess Azula. You could tell it upset them but they totally stay composed lol)
Minor pitfall: Simplifying their bending to only grabby-rock glove style. They've been referred to before as some of the most powerful earthbenders in Ba Sing Se and can probably go beyond glove-shooting. Also, glove-bending can get more creative than grabbing stuff i.e. think of the bullet attack or maybe you could have them turn into blades midair or something
Yes, actually, that's a huge help, because now I can start to see the scene come together in my head. This probably will be a little disappointing to you, but I'm not going to write a full story about the Dai Li. There's no bending, but it's not modern either, they'll be limited to medieval weaponary, so I'm imagining thin armor under their robes and very intricate metal gauntlets so that they can still just catch a sword mid-swing. The more I'm writing this, the more I like it. Thanks!
Heheh I'm glad my obsessive knowledge of the Dai Li was actually helpful! And don't worry, I wasn't expecting you (or most authors) to write a fanon that is Dai Li-centric. The main reason mine even exists is that there were no fleshed out Dai Li stories anywhere on the internet and so I took matters into my own hands xD
Anyway, I'm curious to see what you come up with! I'll be on the lookout in the fanon portal. And oh, I haven't forgotten about your review - I'll keep ya posted there, too.
Just passing through, but I just wanted to say your work on the Times is pretty incredible and quite inspiring for other wikiers. Actually built something very similar for fun, even though my wiki is dead, so I'm pretty much talking to myself anyway but whatever. XD Thanks for the cool concept, and fun for a few hours, and hope you keep it up. The newsletter is a really neat idea, especially if you have an active wiki fanbase.
Awh, thank you! (Pretend this reply isn't 3 weeks late) It's humbling to hear that my random style of writing has been a positive influence!
And I can relate with dead wikis. This sometimes feels like one with the user pool diminishing the longer it's been since the Avatar series stopped airing. It's funny you should mention talking to yourself as an author/blogger, because I've gotten way too comfortable with it LOL. The show goes on whether or not there's anyone there!
I wrote, out of (sort of) boredom, something that could be used as an article for the BSST (as the title suggests), but I'm not entirely sure as to whether there would be interest in what I'm writing about, and whether it could be that, maybe, that article... is a bit too long, I don't know. If you want to, you can check it out here.
Yeah. If there's any interest, just tell me, and I'll put the article into a form usuable on the wiki.
I would like to write a suggestion. Didn't find any 'submit a suggestion' button so I'll just write it here if you don't mind. In the latest Ba Sing Se Times Issue 67 there is a message from the editor, a little bit of vocabulary, some reviews, something from fanon portal, the puzzle, the secret valentines and so on, but I think it would be just great if in the future editions you would add some real life news related to series. For example, I don't know, latest interviews with the authors (maybe even about other topics), maybe some tweets or posts they make about the series, new comic announcements, comic sales statistics, comic or series reviews from famous sites like gizmodo or something like this that you could find online you know? But from the real world. That would be very interesting.
