"Silence! I won't tolerate this kind of indulgence for much longer, Captain Masaru." |
— Mamushi to Masaru.[1] |
Mamushi was a Fire Navy officer during the last stages of the Hundred Year War. At this point, she oversaw Fire Nation military operations in the southern Mo Ce Sea, including those organized by Captain Masaru.[1]
History[]
At one point, Mamushi studied history, and discovered something which intrigued her about the Fifth Nation, an ancient pirate force.[2]
By late 99 AG, Mamushi held the rank of commander and oversaw military operations in the southern Mo Ce Sea. In this position, she acted as the superior to Captain Masaru. When the latter organized an expedition to Hegemon's Folly, the grave site of General Wei on a peninsula at the sea, Mamushi considered this a distraction to the war effort. To her dismay, the captain spent much time attempting to enter Wei's tomb. Ultimately, the Commander visited Masaru's camp at the mausoleum and threatened that he either succeed at whatever he was trying to achieve by the next day or she would order him to leave the area. If he did not comply, she would report his failures to Fire Lord Ozai. When Masaru pointed out that he had hired mercenaries to speed up the excavation, Mamushi remained unfazed and repeated her threat before leaving.[1]
South Pole expedition[]
Despite having berated Masaru for chasing after obscure documents,[1] Mamushi actually hunted for certain artifacts herself. Not long after her visit to Hegemon's Folly, she ordered Sergeant Gyaku's troops to acquire the ancient journal of Taliriktug, a Fifth Nation pirate. Meanwhile, the commander set out for the South Pole region, setting up an expedition camp at its icy coastline. Gyaku followed, having successfully captured the journal but also an archaeologist, Wen. The sergeant convinced Mamushi to spare the researcher by outlining the latter's potential usefulness. Mamushi subsequently met with Wen, threatening the expert with death unless they cooperate with the local expedition. Afterward, Mamushi ordered her forces to move inland toward ruins and a cave which, if Taliriktug's journal was to believed, contained great treasures.[2]
Before long, the Fire Nation troops encountered pirates at the nearby ruins. Mamushi was not surprised by their presence, and challenged the corsairs to a fight, easily defeating them. She even allowed the pirates to retreat without further harassment, though quickly revealed to her subordinates that this was merely a ploy so they could follow the pirates' footprints to their camp. After discovering a location where the corsairs had stored recently recovered loot, Mamushi ordered her soldiers as well as Wen to search the artifacts for everything valuable and transport it to the Fire Nation base camp. This process continued even as pirates kept attacking, though Mamushi became increasingly irritated as the troops only recovered ancient texts. Eventually she ordered her troops to dump the remaining loot and instead move to a nearby cave system. After entering it, the commander and her personal guards quickly went ahead, leaving Gyaku's unit to hold off the pursuing pirates.
Mamushi reached a large hall, the "Elder's Rise", and discovered the entry to what she had been searching. However, the way was blocked by an impenetrable door. The officer was unable to solve the puzzle to unlock the passage. She was thus pleased when Gyaku's troops as well as Wen stumbled into the hall, having survived the pirates' onslaught. Mamushi immediately ordered the researcher to work on unlocking the door, but Wen was hesitant and demanded to know what the commander was seeking. She refused to answer the question, and instead ordered Gyaku to start breaking Wen's fingers until they cooperated. However, the archaeologist relented, agreeing to help as long as Mamushi promised that whatever was beyond the door would not be used to harm the Earth Kingdom. To the surprise of the other Fire Nation soldiers, Mamushi was able to give this promise.
Afterward, Wen succeeded in solving the puzzle and opening the door, whereupon Mamushi rushed into the room, ordering everyone else to stay behind. She took a single chest, ignoring all the other golden relics, and discovered upon returning into the "Elder's Rise" hall that the corsairs had arrived in force. The pirate leader, Kiwaq, demanded that the Fire Nation surrender all the relics. Mamushi mockingly declared that she "would [never] bow to the needs of a pirate", causing Kiwaq to attack. Instead of fighting, however, Mamushi used her firebending to break the cave's roof and escape, leaving her soldiers to hold up the pirates. She then ran back to her base camp, and ordered her personal vessel to take off, abandoning all other Fire Nation troops in the area.[2]
Clash with Team Avatar[]
By summer 100 AG, Mamushi had embarked on a quest to acquire an ancient artifact, while Team Avatar attempted to stop her. In doing so, she mobilized not just a large Fire Navy contingent, but also Fire Army troops and even some airships. The commander discovered the desired object at an ancient ruin near the Fire Nation colony of "Taku Seaport".[3][4] When Aang, Katara, Zuko, and Toph launched a surprise attack to take the artifact, she lost it temporarily to the renegade Fire Nation prince but quickly retook it. She then ordered her troops, including Mongke, to hold off Team Avatar as she made her escape.[3]
Personality[]
Mamushi was an egotistical, haughty,[2] harsh, and demanding person who would not tolerate failure from her subordinates, and she did not like wasting time and resources on efforts she believed to be pointless. She was short-tempered and would silence or interrupt officers of lower rank when talking to them.[1] In addition, she did not hestiate to sacrifice her troops to serve her personal goals.[2] Mamushi also appeared to possess a cruel streak, seemingly taking joy in threatening Masaru with the Fire Lord's wrath[1] or Wen with torture.[2]

Trivia[]
- In older concept art, Mamushi wore a headpiece which strongly resembled the Fire Lord's crown. This detail was not included in the final design implemented in Avatar: Generations.[5][1]
- The developers of Avatar: Generations stated that they plan for Mamushi to become a central character in the game's narrative.[5] In Version 1.11, she was added to the game's introduction,[6] and her role was further expanded in subsequent patches.[2][1]
- Mamushi is a highly venomous species of vipers common in Japan. This snake's name is sometimes used as a nickname for a brutal or sinister person, which reflects Commander Mamushi's personality.
