Earthbender

Luumi was a resident of an Earth Kingdom village attacked by bandits in spring 100 AG. Luumi was saved by Toph Beifong and reunited with their grandparents thanks to the aid of Team Avatar.[1]

History[]

Luumi was born to an earthbender mother in an Earth Kingdom village that had been extorted by bandits for years. Luumi's mother later passed away, and they came to live with their grandparents in the village.

In spring 100 AG, the bandits set fire to Luumi's village in the middle of the night after the residents stood up to them for the first time. Luumi's grandparents and several other villagers managed to survive, slipping out and crossing the river. Luumi was separated from them, but managed to get to safety and hide out with their nascent earthbending abilities.

Luumi rescued

Luumi was rescued by Team Avatar.

After some time passed, Team Avatar came to the village and began looking for survivors. Toph Beifong used her seismic sense to detect vibrations in the earth, and noticed Luumi's hiding spot. She cleared away rock and stone to create a passageway before using her seismic sense again and bringing Luumi out of the spot. Aang and Katara started to ask Luumi what their name was, and what happened at the village, while Sokka was confused why Luumi was not responding. However, Toph told them to stop, as they were traumatizing the child.

Luumi joined Team Avatar as they set out through the woodland to look for other survivors. Toph introduced herself and the rest of the team to the child, and Luumi nervously began to speak to Toph for the first time, also introducing themself by name. Luumi asked Toph where her shoes were, having lost one of theirs. Toph confidently explained that she had not lost them, but rather being barefoot made her a better earthbender than anyone, and that it felt great for her. Smiling, Luumi kicked off their remaining shoe and proceeded to walk barefoot themself.

With Sokka having lost the trail, Toph declared that it was a good time to rest, snatching blubbered seal jerky off Sokka and giving it to Luumi to eat, with the child chomping away with an affectionate look on their face. Sokka then asked Luumi if they could touch their nose with their tongue like he could, much to the child's amusement. Toph then declared that none of them could do what she could, as she raised a pillar of earth as Luumi clapped and stomped. She asked Luumi if they wanted to go for a ride, and then took them skating on an earth wave. As they progressed through the trees, Luumi spotted the rest of the villagers, including their grandmother and grandfather. As Luumi embraced their grandmother, their grandfather began explaining the situation to the rest of Team Avatar.

Luumi earthbending

Inspired by Toph, Luumi demonstrated earthbending in front of their grandparents.

Luumi went to Toph's side as their grandparents kept talking with the others, and managed to make a small earthbending move, much to their grandfather's surprise. Luumi's grandparents thanked Team Avatar, and said they were returning to the village, where Luumi could help them rebuild. Toph and Luumi affectionately hugged each other as they said their goodbyes, with Toph and the rest of Team Avatar departing on Appa.[1]

Abilities[]

By spring 100 AG, Luumi was discovering their earthbending abilities for the first time, and was still only bending a meager amount of earth soon after being reunited with their grandparents. However, Luumi had been able to rely on their earthbending abilities to survive and hide out during the bandits' attack on their village.[1]
