Lirin was a Water Tribe warrior and prison guard from the Southern Water Tribe. Although she had sworn an oath to Chief Hakoda, Lirin joined Gilak and Thod in their militant uprising against the influence of the Northern Water Tribe in the South Pole region and thus against Chief Hakoda.[2]

History[]

A few years after the end of the Hundred Year War, Lirin joined Hakoda and two other officers in his investigation of the caverns underneath the Fire Nation shipwreck, following up on Sokka and Katara's claim that a whole army was hiding there. Although the caverns and tunnels were deserted, they found a warning carved in the wall that they would "soon be shown the truth".

Put on alert by the message, Lirin was part of the military force manning the blockade outside of the town's gates during the festival that Malina and Maliq of the Northern Water Tribe threw in honor of their new partnership with Earthen Fire Industries. Despite this measure of increased security, they could not prevent Gilak and his forces from entering the town and making their intentions clear.

After Gilak's imprisonment, Lirin approached him in his cell after having heard of his speech during the festival from other inmates. She admitted that she thought his cause was just, never having trusted the Northerners herself, and handed him his dinner and the key to his cell.[1]

Another night, Lirin and an escaped Gilak met up before the cell of a sleeping Thod, where he apologized to her for having knocked out one of her fellow guards. She did not hold it against him, however, merely placing the blame with the unconscious officer for having refused to "see the truth about Hakoda". The like-minded duo proceeded to wake up and free Thod and escaped the prison together.

Lirin subsequently joined the rest of Gilak's militant nationalists and stormed Chief Hakoda's palace where he held a conference with Fire Lord Zuko and Earth King Kuei. Reacting to Hakoda's shock to see her as part of Gilak's forces, she apologized for her betrayal but explained that the tribe was in great danger and that he was too blind to see it. In the ensuing fight, Lirin attacked Katara but was easily disarmed and cuffed by the waterbender's water whip, much to her surprise. Lirin managed to evade capture, however, and fled the scene along with Gilak's army after Kuei was kidnapped.[2]
