"Oh, Rangi. My dear friend. Of course the daughter of a shorn, honorless animal would resort to begging." |
— Koulin to Rangi before being punched across the face.[1] |
Koulin was a young Fire Nation noblewoman hailing from the Saowon clan, who once attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls.[2]
History[]
Koulin studied at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls and developed an intense rivalry with Rangi, who was in the same academic year as her. She spread vicious rumors about Hei-Ran with enough plausible deniability that they could not be perceived as insulting the headmistress.
Koulin accompanied her aunt Huazo to North Chung-Ling for the Festival of Szeto. Although the town traditionally fell under the influence of the Keohso clan, the Saowon had come to instigate a conflict with their rivals after Huazo purchased various properties in the city. At the fairground, Huazo introduced Koulin to her former classmate Rangi, while proudly declaring to Avatar Kyoshi that the bonds formed at the academy were like none other in life.[2]
The following morning, a message appeared in the town's melonyam crops, championing Koulin's cousin Chaejin as Fire Lord. While a conflict broke out between the Saowon and Keohso in the fields, Rangi reached out to Koulin, pleading her not to bear the grudges of her aunt and clan leader. Koulin responded that only a daughter of a shorn, honorless Hei-Ran would resort to begging. Rangi struck Koulin across the jaw, causing the rival clans to charge at each other.
Koulin and Rangi fell into an exchange of brutal, vicious strikes with only their knees and elbows in light of the prohibition of Agni Kais during the holiday. Koulin attempted to smash her forehead into Rangi's eye, just missing, and cutting a cash along the cheekbone. Rangi staggered away, and with the empty space, used fire to propel herself into a backflip, her knee coming down on Koulin's head and knocking her unconscious. While Rangi attempted to attack further, a shocked Kyoshi ordered her to stop, and had Koulin brought to Sifu Atuat for healing.[1]
Physical description[]
Koulin was about Kyoshi and Rangi's age. She had a round, pleasant face and wore her hair almost identical to Rangi's.[2]
Personality[]
During her time at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, Koulin developed a deep hatred toward Rangi. She, as well as other students, would spread rumors about Hei-Ran intentionally killing people in Agni Kais. Employing the signature Saowon technique of delivering insults that can easily be dismissed, she would not say anything to Rangi directly so she would not be challenged to a fight, leaving this to colleagues that were too weak for Hei-Ran's daughter to confront without looking like a bully.
She also directed strong insults toward Rangi during the Festival of Szeto in an attempt to provoke her into a fight that would warrant an armed conflict between the Saowon and the Keohso clans.[2]
Abilities[]
Koulin was a skilled firebender as both Rangi and her strikes let out powerful shock waves. She was durable, resisting numerous blows from her opponent, but Rangi trapped her and subsequently knocked her out.[1]
