K-N Mining is a mining company based in Republic City that operates around the world. The company is well-known for its fleet of drilling mecha tanks, and has recently capitalized on the discovery of platinum on Jasmine Island. However, considerable debt issues have caused the company to start mining illegally. Their rushed methods of extraction has seriously threatened the seismic stability of Jasmine Island.

History[]

Despite its global operations, K-N Mining began to be burdened with debt issues. Its owner, Kunchen, started to become desperate for a windfall,[1] and was therefore intrigued by Jasmine Island after vast platinum deposits were discovered there. Kunchen was the foremost of global industrialists who came there with lucrative offers in exchange for access to the island's deposits and mining rights.[2]

Being unable to wait for the council's permission, Kunchen decided to illegally drill on the island and deal with the consequences later.[1] The K-N Mining team used submersibles to bring in mecha tanks onto the island at night. They drilled long tunnels at remote points on the island during the day, when the noise could be drowned out by the din of everyday life. By night, the team used their submersibles to ship the platinum off the island, taking their leave as far as possible from the island's main port.[3]

K-N Mining tried to do the job fast, compromising the structural stability of the tunnels they drilled in order to extend them out quickly. The company started to clear away so much solid stone that the entire island started to shake much more often, threatening a massive collapse of Jasmine Island. When this came to light, Kunchen chose to play up the threat of earthquakes of the island. Corrupt geologists employed by K-N Mining fabricated a report that the island was due for a catastrophic seismic event. With this, Kunchen started to push the Islanders to demand their council sell mining rights to him.[3]

Kunchen's warnings seemed to be proven right when a cave-in occurred beneath the Golden Leaf Tea-Packing Plant. When the island's protectors tried to save the lives of two workers, they discovered the true extent of the tunnels, uncovering one of the company's drilling mecha tanks. When the protectors tried to convince the council that Kunchen and his company was to blame, the industrialist tried to cover his tracks by starting a full collapse of the surface to hide his wrongdoing.[4]
