"G... good luck, guys... I b... believe in y-you..." |
— Juro to Haru and Tyro after being defeated by them.[1] |
Juro was a Fire Army officer who, alongside his brother Goro, served on the Mo Ce Sea prison rig in the late Hundred Year War. Despite being a soldier and a talented firebender, Juro was extremely polite, friendly, and generally uninterested in harming anyone.
History[]
Juro was the elder sibling, and generally handled interpersonal and political issues on Goro's behalf due to the younger brother lacking talent for either.[3] The two brothers were extremely close and looked out to keep each other safe. According to Juro, there was a "long story" behind the circumstances of how he and Goro became officers in the military.[1] At one point, they served in a colony and developed a good relationship with the local captain. When the two were transferred to prison duty, Goro officially complained about this. Juro subsequently sent the captain a message, stating that they were "honored for this opportunity to prove ourselves" and apologized for Goro's complaint, stating that his younger brother was frustrated about no longer working with the captain.[4]
After being assigned to serve on the prison rig, Juro became known to both other guards as well as the prisoners for his extremely polite and humane nature. This made him generally popular, though some soldiers regarded him as a try-hard who was too nice to serve in the military. Juro disliked his commander, the cruel warden, though generally obeyed him as he had no interest in incurring his wrath.
In late 99 AG, Juro and the other guards were put on alert by the warden due to suspicious activity across the rig. Juro discovered the source of the problems, Avatar Aang, as he was patrolling the prison's factory section. The soldier casually greeted the intruder and asked for his name, while introducing himself. Afterward, he politely asked what Aang was doing in the factory area; the airbender responded that he was just hanging around. With some regret, Juro made it clear how unbelievable this claim was, considering the circumstances. This meant he would have to take Aang into custody. The officer was saddened when Aang declared his unwillingness to surrender. The two engaged in a short duel, and Juro was bested. He complimented his opponent's strength before fleeing to get backup; however, he forgot his key on the way.
Later, Juro and Goro rediscovered Aang at the factory's central vent. As the airbender had just monologued about his aims, Juro expressed his admiration about his enemy's plan and asked whether he had thought about it alone. His conversation with Aang was cut short by Goro, however, who was eager for battle. Though the two brothers were a formidable fighting team, they could not defeat Aang. In the clash, Goro was hit hard and fell unconscious, whereupon Juro became extremely concerned. Though Aang assured him that his younger brother was mostly unharmed, Juro readily explained the way to the airbender's target area so that his opponent got out of the way and he could bring Goro to safety.
Soon after, a major prison revolt took place, resulting in a mass breakout. After reorganizing into a militia on the mainland, the ex-prisoners returned to take out the prison rig for good. Just like his brother, Juro was part of the warden's garrison which defended the prison's upper levels from the insurgents. However, he mainly spent his time tending to wounded comrades in the rig's barracks. Eventually, the rebels were reinforced by Boqin's Earth Kingdom Army unit and broke through the upper levels' defenses. They encountered Juro in the barracks, where he initially signaled his readiness to heal their wounded and talk instead of fight. However, the rebels' leader, Tyro, made it clear that they needed the keys to access the warden's headquarters; when Juro refused to hand his keys over, a fight broke out. The Earth Kingdom natives defeated him, though he wished them luck before falling unconscious.
Sometime later, the warden rallied his last remaining forces to defend himself. Juro was part of this last defensive line. As they fought, Tyro pointed out that the Avatar had returned in the form of Aang, but both Juro as well as Goro expressed disbelief in this claim due to Aang being seemingly far too young. Ultimately, they were defeated by Tyro's rebels.[1]
Personality[]
Juro was a composed and very nice person, treating everyone around him with respect. His friendliness was such that some even regarded it as unnerving. By his own admission, Juro lacked the instinct of a fighter and mainly hoped for a quick end to the war. He was empathic and, for the most part, a supportive individual. When encountering enemies, his first action was usually to ask them to politely surrender or to outright offer aid to them. Juro kept a respectful demeanor toward the other nations, and seemed to hold no grudge toward his enemies, never making prejudiced comments, unlike most other Fire Nation soldiers of his time. However, he still feared his superiors so much that he preferred to go against his moral principles instead of risking their wrath. Nevertheless, Haru described him as a "class act" due to his fair and encouraging stance.[1][2]
In addition, Juro greatly cared for his brother Goro,[1] and often helped him out.[3]
Abilities[]
Juro was a strong firebender and also a capable healer.[1][5] He was also skilled in interpersonal communication and politics, handling both on his younger brother's behalf.[3]
