History[]

Young Jinzuk and Rina

Jinzuk and Rina in their youth.

Rina was the daughter of Avatar Roku and his wife, Ta Min.[5] As she grew up, she met and later married Jinzuk, who became a magistrate of Hira'a. They subsequently settled down in the village and had one daughter together, Ursa.[1] As a master herbalist, Rina taught her daughter much about medicinal herbs and poisons.[4]

When Ursa was twenty-one years old, Fire Lord Azulon approached the couple with Prince Ozai in tow. The Fire Sages had prophesied that a powerful bloodline would result from the marriage between his son and a descendant of Avatar Roku, namely Ursa, and Azulon wished to bring this prediction to fulfillment. While Jinzuk was entertaining his guests in the family's greenhouse, Rina was inside the main house, crying over the Crown Prince headpiece that she had inherited from her father. When Ursa came home, Rina told her to go to her father and his guests in the greenhouse, but emphasized to her daughter that she loved her.

Ursa accepted Ozai's marriage proposal, stating that it brought much honor to her family. Rina and Jinzuk attended their daughter's wedding and bid her a final farewell, as Fire Nation princesses were not permitted to have any connection with their family or home towns. Ursa attempted to have letters secretly sent home, but was betrayed by her servant, Elua, to Ozai, and no letters ever reached Jinzuk and Rina.[1] Both of them died years before Ursa's eventual banishment, having never heard from their daughter again.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Rina maintained a greenhouse at their home in Hira'a, and the flowers there were remarked by Fire Lord Azulon as being "beautiful".[1]
  • Since Roku died in 12 BG[3] and Ursa was born around 60 AG,[2] Rina would have been at least 70 years old when she gave birth to her daughter.
  • According to the Avatar: The Last Airbender YouTube channel, Rina went into hiding after her father's demise.[7]

Notes[]

  1. Based on the sketchbook notes of The Search (omnibus edition), Ursa and Ozai got married around 80 AG,[2] 92 years after the death of Roku, Rina's father,[3] and this wedding was attended by Rina.
