| "What a mess. If this is what happens when the Fire Nation comes to Kyoshi Island, Avatar Kyoshi was right to remove us from the mainland." |
| — Jie to Suki after Zuko's raid.[1] |
Jie was a Kyoshi Warrior who lived in one of the Kyoshi Island villages by the late Hundred Year War. A firm believer in her specific village's policy of isolationism, she refused to join Suki's effort to help the Earth Kingdom.
History[]
Jie was born in a village on Kyoshi Island that was led by Oyaji at the time.[1] Despite other villages on the island trading with the Earth Kingdom mainland,[2][3] Oyaji's village had long maintained strict isolationism, mostly cutting itself off from the rest of the world. Its inhabitants believed this to be a "mandate" by the island's founder, Avatar Kyoshi.[nb 1] Jie was of a similar age as Suki, and was part of her clique of friends since childhood. They joined the Kyoshi Warriors together.
At one point, several harvests failed on Kyoshi Island, threatening Oyaji's village with famine. Jie organized the distribution of the remaining food reserves to needy villagers at the time, and was very thankful for Suki gathering edible wild plants to alleviate the situation. However, as a consequence of the near-starvation of the village, a Kyoshi Warrior, Mingxia, spoke up against the isolationism. The village leaders refused to change their policies, resulting in Mingxia voluntarily leaving the island.[1]
In late 99 AG, Avatar Aang and his friends visited Kyoshi Island. This ultimately led to a raid on Oyaji's village by Fire Nation Prince Zuko. Jie and the other Kyoshi Warriors fought off the attack, but the village was left severely damaged.[1][2]
Jie opposed Suki's plan for the Kyoshi Warriors to help the Earth Kingdom mainland.
Following the raid, Jie helped to clear the rubble and commented that the attack showcased how Avatar Kyoshi had been right to remove her people from the mainland. Suki disagreed, arguing that the attack showcased the need of the Kyoshi Warriors taking a more active role in the Earth Kingdom. Jie pointed out that they were following Avatar Kyoshi's mandate through their non-involvement and accused Suki of talking like Mingxia. When the Kyoshi Warrior leader outlined her arguments, Jie maintained her ground, stating that the warriors were responsible for protecting their home, not the rest of the world. Regardless, Suki pledged to venture to the maintain to fight in the Hundred Year War and asked who was ready to join her. Though flustered, Jie stood by her principles and silently refused, whereas several other Kyoshi Warriors decided to follow Suki's lead. She thus stayed behind to protect the village in her comrades' absence until the end of the Great War.[1]

Notes[]
- ↑ The comic Suki, Alone claims that isolationism was a policy that applied to all of Kyoshi Island,[1] but this is contradicted by other canon information such as the episode "The Warriors of Kyoshi",[2] the older Avatar: The Last Airbender official website,[3] and Avatar Extras.[4] Thus, the isolationism as portrayed in the comic can only apply to some villages on the island, not all of them.
