Earthbender Earth Kingdom emblem

Jae was an earthbender and fisherman from Yokoya. In his youth, he was among those who regularly harassed a local servant girl, Kyoshi, due to her closeness to the suspected Avatar, Yun, despite her status as outsider and orphan.

History[]

Jae was born around 312 BG. As a result, he was the ideal age to be the possible successor of Avatar Kuruk. When Jianzhu and Kelsang visited Yokoya in 305 BG, Jae was among the Earth Kingdom children presented with the Avatar relics, but he failed the test.[1]

Jae grew to resent Kyoshi since she lived at the Avatar mansion and had a relatively good life compared to him, whereas he had to traverse the choppy waters of the Whaletail Strait in hopes of catching fish. Jae was implied to have physically harmed Kyoshi at some point in the past.

In 296 BG, Jae and his friends Aoma and Suzu held up Kyoshi outside the mansion as she was delivering a jar of pickled spicy kelp. Jae claimed that Kyoshi did not want to "step in a boat". He spit at the ground near Kyoshi's heels to show his disdain for her. When Kyoshi insulted Jae, he balled up his fists and moved toward her, realizing that he could harm her since Aoma had rendered the servant helpless. However, before he could attack Kyoshi, he was stopped by Rangi, Yun's bodyguard and a friend of Kyoshi. Jae backed away from Kyoshi since he was intimidated by the firebender's appearance. He fled with Aoma and Suzu back to the village after Rangi told them to leave the grounds of the mansion.[2]

Personality[]

Jae was known to be arrogant as he claimed that Kyoshi would not step in a boat, believing that she did not care about fishing matters since she was a servant girl. Jae was also ill-mannered as he chose to spit at the ground near Kyoshi's heels instead of elaborating on his claim.[2]
