Giya was a resident of a waterfront village who met Sokka and Suki during a visit to Seashell San's House of Shells. She had an extensive knowledge of shells, and was trained in defensive combat by Suki shortly after meeting her.[1]

Sometime after the end of the Hundred Year War, Giya visited Seashell San's House of Shells, and expressed interest in buying the shell of a hermit marmoset, but her offer was quickly dismissed by San. Prior to leaving the store, Giya witnessed Suki confront San and Jojan. She was later approached by Suki and Sokka, who wanted to make sure that she was okay.

After inquiring where Suki learned to fight, Giya discovered that the nonbender was a Kyoshi Warrior, and identified her as one of the Earth Kingdom warrior women serving as the Fire Lord's elite guard. Giya expressed her desire to be like Suki, prompting the two to offer her some training so that she would know how to defend herself. Giya initially declined, but relented after Suki told her the story of how Avatar Kyoshi trained the first Kyoshi Warriors. Along with her friends, Giya proceeded to train with Suki on defensive combat.[1]
