Family tree entries for people who are unknown should be in italics. |

Currently, Family Trees look like this:
| Lao |
| Poppy | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Toph |
| Unknown | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Lin |
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Note that the only thing distinguishing the "Unknown" from the other names is a blue link, which isn't always that easy to spot.
I suggest we format the trees like this:
| Lao |
| Poppy | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Toph |
| Unknown | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Lin |
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Now there's a clear distinction between the names and the readers can easily deduce that Lin's father is an unknown person, not a person named "Unknown". GhostUser (wall • contribs) 00:12, October 29, 2012 (UTC)

- Wouldn't it better to put it down as "Lin's Mother". That way we avoid "Unknown" being there at all? It's not factually in correct either, it's not implying that Toph is married to this other person, since we don't know that. Otherwise, support. link=Message Wall:Ruen|Message Wall Ruen link=Fanon:Passion|Passion (Fanon) 01:38, October 29, 2012 (UTC)
- We don't put down Lin's mother in this instance because it would therefore imply that the character is not unknown, just unnamed. There would be confusion with cases like Haru's mother, where the character is just unnamed, not unknown. Having "unknown" creates a helpful distinction, imo.

Err... that would be Lin's father...oi...>.> just woke up. Anyway... it's not like we don't know there wasn't one. There had to be. So it is, at this point, just unnamed. We don't need a history on the person really. As I said though, it's not factually incorrect to put down "Lin's father" since married or not, he's still Lin's father. Don't we generally try to avoid placing "Unknown" down? Or stating things such as "we don't know much else". link=Message Wall:Ruen|Message Wall Ruen link=Fanon:Passion|Passion (Fanon) 01:49, October 29, 2012 (UTC)
- .....And I am apparently not any more awake than you are. :-p But yeah, back to the discussion. I'm not opposing your suggestion because it is factually incorrect, but rather because it is somewhat inconvenient and inconsistent. "Lin's father" would allude to a connection and established relevance the character has to the series that does not exist, so unknown would technically be a bit more canon. Furthermore, there would be times where we could not use "father" or any similar title, because we don't know the gender of the given character due to them not being married, so "unknown" is more consistent.
- Just as a note, we are starting to get off-topic, so we should probably move this talk to another thread.
