Forums: War Room Fanon advertising idea

You might have noticed on a few people's userpages, like Moon Beam and AvatarRokusGhost that at the bottom right of their page their is a small blue/black box that says; "Read my fanon!". You also would have seen me set up Fanon Advertising in the hope of gaining users more readers, however I'm not sure this has worked so much as it is a low traffic page.

So I have been experimenting with the code supplied by Moon Beam for the "Read my fanon!" box, and I have had another idea for advertising fanon neatly, well, kind of neatly, that's a matter of perspective. Anyway, I have played around with the basic code that I had, to create something a little different, which you can see in action here: Avatar: The Legend of Teru.

My idea was using this code as a way to advertise on the fanon portal. The system will work like "you scratch my back I scratch yours" in a way that a user must present their fanon for advertising. Users who wish to have their fanon advertised pay the price of having someone else's fanon advertised on their page by use of the same advertising box. This way it is fair for everyone, though the only catch is that you have to have an even number of advertisements for it to work evenly, but no matter.

The form of advertising I have implemented on Avatar: The Legend of Teru is a very basic design, and I have a few other ideas to test if people would like a cleaner way to advertise. This way of advertising means that more people will see the advertisement, and it doesn't interfere with any of the article content. So, what does everyone think? Do you like it, not like it, despise it? Do you have another idea of how it could be presented visually? Whatever you want to say or suggest, do so. I don't like it. There's already a "read more" at the bottom of the page that can show various different fanons. And it's kind of cutting over the right side of the page in mine. Vulmen (talkcontribs) 11:54, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't know, the thing itself is kinda big. And I'd almost prefer if we got people to read our fanons by earning it... I don't now, that just kind of seems right. A Light Shining in the Darkness - Talk - Shadows That Dance 12:00, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) I don't like it; I find it distracting. – Natsu11 · (wallNanatsu no Taizai) 12:01, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
You're right Natsu. Now that I look at it, it is a bit distracting... Well in any case, thanks for the feedback, I just thought it could be something worth looking into. Thanks, Rassilon of Old (Talk - Teru - Help) 13:20, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
Wait a second, this isn't really "taking up the right side of the page." It's in the empty section. The reader can choose to ignore it. It's also voluntary so if the author doesn't want it on their fanon, they don't have to participate. But some might be willing to have it so that they can have a line for their fanon elsewhere.
I support this. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message meRead my fanon) Energy Saga Dragons, Sieges and Volcanoes 13:40, July 29, 2011 (UTC)

ARG: It is not taking up a bit of space, but it is distracting. – Natsu11 · (wallNanatsu no Taizai) 13:45, July 29, 2011 (UTC)

I don't think its that distracting. It just takes some getting used to. Plus its voluntary for the author. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message meRead my fanon) Energy Saga Dragons, Sieges and Volcanoes 13:51, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm...I know, why don't we give it a trial run just putting it on the main page of the fanons involved? So people won't be distracted while reading a chapter. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message meRead my fanon) Energy Saga Dragons, Sieges and Volcanoes 14:02, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
Well if you want to give it a test run, I'd be more than happy to oblige. Rassilon of Old (Talk - Teru - Help) 20:34, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
Count me in. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message meRead my fanon) Energy Saga Dragons, Sieges and Volcanoes 17:58, July 30, 2011 (UTC)

Looking at it again, it really doesn't look all that distracting. To test it out, I created my own here and here. A Light Shining in the Darkness - Talk - Shadows That Dance 12:47, August 1, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, so we have a prototype of this on my fanon, BlueDagger's fanon and Rass's fanon. I think this gives us a good idea of how it might look if this idea is put into action. Is this something too distracting or something we can get used to? I think it looks fine when its off to the side and can help new writers get exposure. Also, what does everyone think of the sizes - maybe there should be a standard on that. The "distracting" element can be brought to a minimum - especially if its only on the main page. Plus its voluntary for the author.
Now, each of the three examples has a fanon advertised on its own page - which obviously wouldn't be the case. If we go through with this, I think it should be a rotating system. When a fanon author signs up to have their fanon advertised, they get their fanon advertised somewhere, then they have a fanon advertised on their main page which changes from time to time. Fanon A would have Fanon B advertised on it for a period, then Fanon C, then Fanon D, etc. The rotating system can be updated by fanon admins via sandboxes. I think this works well since it can help authors who want more readers and since its voluntary, it does not impose on authors who don't want a part in it. Obviously you would have to consent to having a fanon advertised on your fanon to advertise your own somewhere else. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message meRead my fanon) Energy Saga Dragons, Sieges and Volcanoes 20:09, August 17, 2011 (UTC)

Alright, let's have a test run for say, two weeks, so users can test out the advertising idea and see what they think of it, then deliver feedback. I think we should have a sign up form, which I'll put just below, that way users that want their fanon advertised can be determined. I'll also mention this service in the upcoming fanon section of the BSST, so that way we can recruit more volunteers so that more users will see the new advertising method. If this is then aproved by the community, we will delete the current Fanon Advertising page and replace it with a page with info on this method.

And it would be obvious to have the advertisement change every few days so that it isn't the same old fanon advertised on your fanon, and that it then at least rotates, and I could manage this from my user space, or just use subpages in the Project namespace. So, sign up below! Rassilon of Old (Talk - Teru - Help) 06:58, August 18, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for signing up guys, I didn't expect so many! If you look at your fanon pages, you'll now see the advertisements added, so please do not remove them. If you have a problem with them, contact me for furthur information. The advertisements will be changed once a week by yours truly. ;) If anyone else would like their fanon's advertised, see me, and if anyone has a problem with the fanon advertised on their page (formatting wise) contact me, we are still in beta mode, so things can be changed! I am currently working on making the adds rounded, and I'll check back when I've done that. Rassilon of Old (Talk - Teru - Help) 10:46, August 22, 2011 (UTC)

Okay guys, I managed to get the advertisements to be rounded (thanks to 888 for adding my required commands to MediaWiki:Wikia.css) and I was wondering how do you guys think it looks? I personally prefer the look. See an example here. Rassilon of Old (Talk - Teru - Help) 05:49, August 23, 2011 (UTC)
Hmm...the rounded version does look nice and neat. I'm okay with either of them though. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message meRead my fanon) Energy Saga Dragons, Sieges and Volcanoes 05:53, August 23, 2011 (UTC)

As long as there's a limit to the number of advertisements at any one time, it looks fine. Plus for new people like me, it helps us find other good fanons.TheOldMasters 21:21, August 31, 2011 (UTC)
