Ying Hamada is the current President of the United Republic of Nations

President Hamada took office in 276 AG, and was elected on the promise of kickstarting the economy after a turbulent recession. She managed a close reelection, but all polls were stacked against her at the end of her second term. However, that all changed when Avatar Xiao was discovered a few months before the election: an earthbender from Republic City itself. Hamada was more than happy to make him feel welcome, and threw a gala in his honor.
As the leader of the nation where Xiao had been discovered, Hamada was entitled to an extra seat on the list of Korra's executors. She considered Xiao learning in Republic City, but when Lidana Sato proposed that he learn under Wuji Beifong, she relented. After Xiao came under scrutiny for his mother using White Lotus funds in his sister's trial, Hamada condemned the Avatar and agreed to Dacheng's proposal to remove Wuji as teacher. Her tactical manipulation of Xiao's discovery won her a third term in office, something that had been considered highly unlikely a few months beforehand.
