| "I am the greatest earthbender in the world! Don't you two dunderheads ever forget it!" |
| — Toph to Xin Fu and Yu.[1] |
Xia He was born in the bustling city of Ba Sing Se and is the daughter of an Earth Kingdom scholar and a Fire Nation artist. Her home was a harmonious blend of two cultures, filled with her mother’s vibrant paintings and her father’s ancient earthbending scrolls. Lian Hua grew up learning the art of pottery from her father, shaping clay with both her hands and subtle techniques taught to her by her father. Living in the lower ring of Ba Sing Se, Xia He helps her father run a small shop where they sell their crafts. She often daydreams of adventure and romance, inspired by the tales of heroes and legends from both heritages.
After Republic City's formation, Xia had two children: [name], who succeeded her as Chief of Police, and Jasmine.
History[]
Early life[]
Xia was born under the veil of secrecy in the Earth Kingdom, the result of a forbidden love between a humble merchant and a noblewoman from the Fire Nation. Her mother, seeking to protect her reputation and status, left Xia in the care of her father, who raised her in the lower rings of Ba Sing Se.
Growing up, Xia was always aware of the duality within her - the fire of her mother’s heritage and the steadfastness of her father’s earthbending roots. Her father, a kind-hearted man, taught her the value of hard work and integrity, selling exotic fabrics and pottery in the bustling markets of the city.
Xia grew up among the earthbenders, yet the fire within her was undeniable. She inherited her mother’s fiery spirit and, with it, the rare gift of firebending. In a city where earth was celebrated and fire was feared, Xia kept her ability hidden, practicing only in the quietest hours of dawn, where the only witnesses were the flickering shadows on the wall. Her life took an unexpected turn when she encountered Prince Zuko during his exile. His tales of redemption and honor resonated with her, and she found herself drawn to the prince who, like her, was caught between two worlds.
Spring 100 AG[]
Xia is first introduced as a hooded vigilante known as the Whispering Wind. One night, Xia stumbles upon a group of corrupt city guards harassing an elderly vendor. Without a second thought, she intervenes, using her wit and agility to outmaneuver the guards and ensure the vendor’s safety.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Trivia[]
- Toph's name is usually written as 北方拓芙.Her given name means "expanding lotus", while her surname means "northern". On one other occasion, her given name was written as 托夫, which is the phonetic transcription based on the official guide for foreign names. Toph can also be seen as a sort of pun on the words "tough" and "toff", a British slang word meaning "upper-class".
- Toph was the only blind person shown in either series.
- Toph was the first known person to be born with a disability, the second being Ming-Hua.
- In The Promise trilogy, Toph represents the vice of rage, over which she is able to prevail due to her time at her metalbending academy.
- Due to her blindness, Toph had no reading or writing skills. That being said, she apparently had some math skills, as seen when she was counting money.
- A recurring joke was that other characters tended to forget Toph was blind, only for her to sarcastically remind them that she was.
