| "I have been appointed as a Water Sage to train you in waterbending and spirituality." |
| — Katjuk to Kuruk. |
The Water Sages are an order that serves as the spiritual authority of the Water Tribe. Their duties include religious teaching, promoting spirituality, protecting sacred places such as the Spirit Oasis, and carrying out special missions.
The Water Sages consist of a Spiritual Council, which always has twenty members. To become a Sage, one must undergo appropriate training in spirituality and waterbending, but one does not immediately become a Water Sage. A person who is ready to assume this position is given the title of "divine" and may be promoted to Water Sage when he is chosen to fill a vacancy on the Council or when he is required to carry out a mission.
There are currently three branches of the Water Sages: the Northern Water Sages on the North Pole, the Southern Water Sages on the South Pole, and the Sacred Water Sages on the Water Tribe Sacred Island.
History[]
During the migrations of the Bhanti people, a group of sages arrived at the North Pole. The Tribal Prince Angakkuq became very interested in the spirituality of the Bhanti. He studied with them, accepted their philosophy, and even traveled to Bhanti Island. After returning to Agna Qel'a, Angakkuq, with the help of the Bhanti tribe, including his friend Sheng Peng, founded the order of the Water Sages as the spiritual authority of the Water Tribe.
Although they were officially the spiritual authority of the entire Water Tribe, in reality they operated only in the Northern Water Tribe - their headquarters was in Agna Qel'a, and most of their duties involved activities at the North Pole. Therefore, in the Southern Water Tribe they are often called "Northern Water Sages", which later became their official name. In turn, people from other nations simply called them "Northern Water sages".
Shortly after the Water Tribe Civil War, Water Sage Inuksuk, who was horrified by Unalaq's actions at the South Pole, traveled to the Southern Water Tribe, feeling a mission to make amends for his tribe's occupation, war, and creation of the Dark Avatar. There, he decided to create a southern branch of the Water Sages, to which Chief Tonraq agreed.
