Unaraq is a major character in the fanon Avatar: The Legacy of Rong Yan, Unaraq is crowned prince of the Southern Water Tribe. Meaning he's the heir apparent of Chief Unirak, his grandfather.
History[]
Early Life[]
Born into royalty of the Southern Water Tribe, as the crowned prince, and future chief. Unaraq lived his childhood famously. Chief Unirak, took Unaraq into the wild often to learn how to survive in the wilderness and the icy cold lands of the South Pole and also trained him to be a warrior. As a child, he saw a man fishing at a near glacier, and was surprised how well the man fished.
Since he saw the man fishing near a glacier, he seemed to have a passion for fishing. People think wrong of him being a fisherman when he's royalty he shouldn't be fishing. Unaraq should be doing better things, like war meetings or plans, or whatever princes' do. Unaraq finds that stuff boring, and to pass the time his hobby is fishing and selling the fish to any of the other nations.
Unaraq is also a skilled warrior for his age since his father took him out into the wilderness at such a young age and trained him in the art of the warrior. His favorite weapon is his whale-tooth spiked club. Unaraq only uses the Saber-tooth Cat knife to skin game.
Meeting the Avatar[]
In Chapter 3, Avatar Rong Yan wanted to meet the cook who had made him the delicious fish. When the fish redirected him to the fisherman that caught the fish and gave the credit to him. He met Unaraq and his crew.
Not knowing anything of Unaraq being royalty, he thanked him for the meal and Unaraq and the crew went on their way.
Crossing Paths Again[]
Unaraq was reintroduced to Avatar Rong Yan by his father Chief Unirak. Rong Yan and Prince Unaraq had quickly recognized each other and knew that they've met before back at the Fire Nation eons ago.
Reuniting again, they soon became friends, and their destinies have intertwined. Now Unaraq along with his sister the princess has joined Rong Yan in his quest to master the four elements.
Ni Juo and the Hermit[]
Team Avatar arrives in Ni Juo, where they spend time there for about two weeks. They accomplish a few odd jobs while in town. Tanaraq gets into an argument with Unaraq, and slaps him after he calls her a drama queen after defending Aloi.
After this he gets angry and he leaves while his sister instantly regrets hitting him. He wanders off and eventually finds Aloi. Who is also angry at Rong Yan for defending Tanaraq, Aloi, however, finds herself in a love triangle. While Rong Yan is clueless to the whole thing Unaraq takes advantage of this because he grows to like Aloi. They converse and hold hands while they walk through the village.
They find themselves in front of the house of a widow after she shrieks, soldiers had stolen her money. Even after the law in the Oma Kingdom states that widows of soldiers don't pay taxes because their husbands paid with their service to the kingdom.
While Rong Yan and Tanaraq are looking for a missing girl who was kidnapped alongside an old man. With clues given by superstitious citizens who believe the thundering sounds from the mountains were the cause of the disappearances.
Rong Yan and Tanaraq venture to the mountains to find the sound but in the end, only find an abandoned cabin with a firepit. They leave and meet a man named Beiyin who agrees to help them and tells them his father was kidnapped by the soldiers who are supposed to defend the town. He didn't pay his weekly taxes so they're holding his father at ransom. This is when they learn that the girl was kidnapped by the soldiers as well.
The next day the soldiers arrive to rob the widow blind but Aloi and Unaraq are there to stop it. Aloi places a barrier around her and the widow's house and produces a psychic scream that shatters the soldiers' eardrums. The men run away back to their hideout Beiyin, Rong Yan, Tanaraq make their way to the screech off to the northwest and find Unaraq and Aloi there.
Beiyin takes them to a cave where he saw men patrolling he's been scouting the area for a week now. Team Avatar and Beiyin assault the cave and incapacitate all the soldiers, while Beiyin grabs their identification papers and Tanaraq, breaks the chains holding the girl and Beiyin's father with ice.
A week later they return to the cabin separately and Rong Yan and Tanaraq meet the hermit. Rong Yan gasps and is surprised when he sees that the tattoos around the hermit's body are similar to an airbender's but different. The man introduces himself as a Vibrant One a secret organization of soundbenders.
Rong Yan remembers when Aloi told him the story of the soundbenders, eventually Aloi and Unaraq bump into them. Aloi faints as soon as she meets eyes with Giman the soundbender. Most Vibrant Ones have airbender tattoos but children born and raised by parents in the Vibrant Ones master airbending and soundbending and so carry different arrows.
Giman teaches Aloi and Rong Yan through another week of soundbending lessons and helps them make up. Rong Yan learns that Giman can project his spirit with his most trusted friends, he suggests Rong Yan to learn the ability. Rong Yan meets with his past lives who tell him that he could learn if his level of spirituality was high enough or if he takes the pilgrimage from Mun Jin who can help him.
Rong Yan tried to contact Mun Jin but Xi Tong appears instead telling Rong Yan that summoning Mun Jin requires an immense power of spirituality. Mun Jin is an Avatar for legendary proportions and Rong Yan's frustrated because he can't speak with this particular past life.
Northern Water Tribe[]
Team Avatar comes to the Northern Water Tribe after spending two weeks in Ni Juo, Shiwei and a few days in Jun Lao, Bai Da. Upon arrival, they meet with Cupun and he relays news to them. Rong Yan learns that General Senlin is still alive but allows Rong Yan to enter his kashim to speak with his past lives for wisdom.
While Tanaraq reunites with Tulok and Aloi and Unaraq spend more time together. Rong Yan is again frustrated that he can't speak with Mun Jin. He feels like a failure but when he focuses hard enough he summons Arrluk who tells him of a mantra he could repeat for some time that might remove the blockage that's preventing him from contacting Mun Jin.
Unaraq stays behind to chat with his sister's future father-in-law, they both go fishing while Unaraq asks Cupun questions about being chief. Just to get a different opinion other than his own father's perspective on things.
When Amak's body was found and the investigation deemed it to be an assassination, Cupun anointed Noa in charge of what happens next. The unrest occurred in Cupun's palace an hour later, Ambassador Dashi was accused of espionage and arrested despite having diplomatic immunity. Elder Noa and the other nobles agreed to debate on what occurs next in his estate. He even went as far as to threaten Ambassador Thod and Avatar Rong Yan with arrest.
The next morning while Cupun and Tulok were in a meeting with the Court of Elders. Sokka and the other guards found Amak's body after a woman discovered it in the alley. The investigations done by the other guards after Sokka left suspected that white jade poison was used.
The test consisted of a droplet of white jade poison mixing with a drop of blood if it coagulated then it was the poison the man suspected. Sokka had run to Elder Noa's estate to find Cupun and Tulok and give them the grim news.
The royal guards found the planted evidence the dagger of Qianda Kingdom design, the passports and the scroll with the forged signature of Earth King Qiang Zhen.
When Sokka arrived at the meeting he disrupted it to speak with the chief and the prince. After he gave the news it sparked outrage and panic amongst the elders. Which led to events that Cupun and Tulok were unaware of while they arranged the burial of their fallen relative.
Ashuna and her temple workers received the body from the guards who carried it there, she investigated the body where she called an old friend of hers. An alchemist that specialized in poisons named Mamittuk. Mamittuk identified the poison with the same method that the royal guard used as a white jade plant.
When Cupun and his family were escorted to the prayer room, Yakone one of the young seers gave Cupun a vision. Yakone became the medium for Torngark and La who warned Cupun of treachery within the tribe and a war with the Qiangda Kingdom. Cupun accepted the prediction from the future but forgot about it when it came to the burial of his nephew and the wedding of his son.
When the family arrived she performed all the needed rituals to prepare the body for burial and the soul toward the afterlife. After the rituals were done the body was buried in a cavern near the spirit forest above the city of Aupaluk. Where every royal was buried even to the very first chief himself.
He also attended Tanaraq and Tulok's wedding at the end of the ceremony after he ate some food he and Aloi ran off to a balcony alone. Where they watched the aurora borealis and kissed under the moonlight.
Three years later, they traveled all over to the Earth Kingdom together while Rong Yan masters waterbending with Naartok. They learn of all sorts of different things when they meet Rong Yan they tell him of it. But they spend three years together in love, Rong Yan projects his spirit to speak with them and interrupts their attempt at coitus. Rong Yan disappears and reappears to remind them of something but they yell at him to go away.
New Earthbending Master[]
When Aloi and Unaraq received a message from the Avatar they decided to meet him in Han Tui. Where they were expected by Sun Wu. However, when they arrived Sun Wu had died that morning and instead were invited over to the governor's estate where they patiently waited the arrival of their friend who they hadn't seen in three years. When Rong Yan showed up they reunited with him, Diaoyu invited Aloi and Unaraq to stay in his guest house.
To the dismay of Unaraq, Aloi agreed to the invitation while he argued with her about privacy now that Rong Yan will be their house mate. She ignored Unaraq's wishes and lectured him instead that evening Rong Yan returned at a time when Aloi and Unaraq were involved in activities and he ruined it for Aloi by knocking on their bedroom door. The next morning Unaraq was annoyed while Aloi told him to buzz off if he didn't like what happened last night.
Unaraq grew to like Rong Yan's newest friend Jushi right off the bat. He was amazed at the level of skill the bounty hunter had when it came to dueling Juedou, Diaoyu's guard captain in a duel. As the governor wanted to see if Jushi was even a so-called master.
Long Live the King[]
Team Avatar enters Omashu for the first time and they eventually reach the palace where Gao Zu is present. There Gao tests the Avatar's new master in three different challenges that he believes will help the master succeed in his bending lessons. Jushi succeeded on all three tests and Rong Yan learned that Jushi can sense whether someone is innocent or guilty by chakras, and feelings. Rong Yan realized Jushi was spiritual, and that someday he can help Rong Yan master the Avatar State.
Aloi grew to befriend the seemingly harmless prince of the Oma Kingdom, Hui. Hui was born disabled he never learned to utter a single word and was identified as a mute. Physicians reported to the King that his son's larynx never fully developed. Hui went out of his way for the Air Nomad girl because he had a crush on her which Jushi promised he'd convince Aloi to go on a date with her if he helped him get Hui out of the cage.
When Hui learned that Aloi was in a relationship he threw a tantrum that was cut short by his father. Which resulted in his punishment and stripped title until further notice. Unaraq wanted to fight Hui but Aloi calmed him down and told him he couldn't do anything in Omashu. Unaraq eventually got black out drunk with King Gao and Jushi, and Rong Yan. Aloi convinced Gao to free Hui and they became good friends much to the dismay of her boyfriend Unaraq. When Unaraq and Aloi didn't talk for over the course of two weeks while in Omashu, Aloi did things with Hui to spite of Unaraq.
Prisoner in Yumen[]
Unaraq was captured on a scouting mission along with several others and shipped off to Yumen the capital of the Yu province. In Yumen he was beaten and tortured because the Water Tribes conquered Bei Fu, and the nearby fort. The victories Tribesmen had across the state angered the Yu province governor.
Unaraq himself who was connected to the Avatar attempted to contact Rong Yan but thought he failed. Although, Rong Yan only received visions of Unaraq, he seemed distressed and he was beaten and trapped.
Mun Jin later told Rong Yan to astral projection to his friend, eventually he found himself in a jail cell with Unaraq. He still didn't know the name of the city he was in. During the trial Unaraaq learned the name of the trial and without enough evidence he was found guilty by Tsuyo-sa and Governor Wenhua Shangye. He was kept in his cell one final time where he told Rong Yan his location, which led Rong Yan to leave on Shen alone to find Unaraq in Yumen. He only had until the afternoon of the next day to rescue Unaraq.
Unaraq was the final prisoner of war to be executed after all the others scouts were killed. The citizens ran for their lives when they saw a flying red serpent and an angry firebender on top of it. Rong Yan jumped off Shen to put himself into danger and force the Avatar State to trigger. Avatar Mun Jin took control of Rong Yan's body and unleashed his wrath on the capital city. In a matter of several minutes several thousands of citizens and soldiers were murdered in punishment, buildings were leveled, a tsunami, tornadoes, lightning storm, earthquake and even volcanoes erupted within Yumen. The earthquake was so massive that it caused aftershocks in Ba Sing Se, Omashu, Jinyin Island and several capital cities near Yumen. After the city's destruction Rong Yan collapsed on Shen's saddle and Unaraq cared for Rong Yan until they returned to Bei Fu.
Relationship Issues[]
After the argument in Omashu, Unaraq and Aloi had a growing wound in their relationship. During their visit to Bei Fu they were not speaking. Jushi mentioned of a spirit known as the Heartseeker on Yaoping Mountain in Yunan province near the village of Yaoping. Apparently, the spirit was demoted to immortal when the Haijun Kingdom adopted the Oma Kingdom's deity Shanshen an elemental god of earth.
It is said, that the hopeless romantics or those with relationship issues flocked to Yue Lao for guidance or even for a love potion to make someone their true love. But often that came at a price, it is said he wears a red string around his wrist which he uses to invisibly tie two potential lovers together.
Aloi and Jushi ventured to Yaoping mountain because Aloi was on a quest to save her relationship with Unaraq. She and Jushi met the red-skinned immortal of love, Yue Lao, who gave Aloi advice on her relationship and offered her a love potion which she could obtain from a store in the town or deal with her relationship.
Aloi took the potion option and Jushi tried his luck at the being and inquired about his future if he would die alone or eventually get married. The spirit gave him a prediction of the future but then caught himself and then claimed it to be a lie. He told Jushi that he was going to have a son that would be the spiritual adviser of the next Avatar.
When Aloi and Jushi, returned to Bei Fu, she hid the potion from Unaraq and planned to dump the contents into his tea. She hesitated in the moment when suddenly Unaraq who grew impatient with his tea walked over to the kitchen to find her suspicious and hiding something from him. He first grew to assume that she attempted to poison him but she confessed her intentions and told him it was a love potion from Yue Lao. She wanted to give it to him in his tea so that he would fall in love with her again.
Unaraq stared at the vial and agreed that he would imbibe its contents so that they can stay together forever but in the end Aloi broke the potion instead. She would rather have her relationship with the prince be tested through time than take his will from him.
The Deserter[]
Rong Yan and Unaraq recognized Palartok where Unaraq ordered him to be arrested right away, after he was tortured a bit he agreed to help them and offer his assistance. Cupun was reluctant on the idea however, because he couldn't trust a deserter. Lord Cupun wanted him dead right then and there but Unirak convinced him to let Palartok live a bit longer.
He was interrogated by Unirak and Cupun about everything that Senlin had been planning and he even mentioned what had transpired after the departure of Rong Yan and the gang from Omashu. Calling Senlin, the Commander of the Triumvirate, he also mentioned that Senlin ordered spies and assassins to be sent to Bei Fu to target Unirak, Unaraq, and Cupun.
Ba Sing Se[]
Team Avatar arrives in Ba Sing Se, with the assistance of Ambassador Dashi does Rong Yan get to see the Earth King. Once meeting the Earth King, he summarizes events that are occuring around the world as he journeyed and mastered the elements. Qiang Zhen shares information and mentions the Fire Nation princess is in the city. Qiang Zhen invited Team Avatar to the annual parties held on Laogai Island.
Defending the Harbor[]
Unaraq, along with Chieftain Unirak, and Lord Cupun followed by their hidden camps within the Agrarian Ring and near the harbor helped defend the harbor of the city. The harbor was being invaded by the Northern Rebellion, Shouchun province navy, and the Fifth Nation fleets. With the assistance from Tribesmen Air Support and the Northern Water Tribe fleet led by Fleet Admiral Palartok and Rear Admiral Oomailiq, they stood a chance against the intruders.
Kimaru almost killed Unaraq and left him for dead where he bled to his death, luckily, Palartok saved his life. He used up his oasis water to heal the mortal wound that would've taken the prince's life. This gave Unaraq a second chance of life, he enacted revenge and killed Kimaru. A second time near the end, Unaraq was almost crushed by Fleet Admiral Sappak. Unaraq killed Sappak with a broken targe made of earth.
Execution of a Traitor[]
During Palartok's trial he was found guilty of his desertion and treason crimes, he was sentenced to death by Chieftain Tulok. Unaraq stopped the execution and convinced Tulok to let Palartok go, he explained what happened during the siege of the harbor of Ba Sing Se. Unaraq felt his debt was repaid when he saved Palartok from his execution and instead he was placed in prison for thirty years.
A Lotus in the Snow[]
Three years after breaking up with Nuttatatik, Unaraq encountered his ex-girlfriend Nuttatatik inside the palace halls while he returned from a public appearance with Aloi. She searched for him in the palace after she learned he returned from the Earth Kingdoms. When she attempted to embrace him a royal guard stopped her and warned her of the potential arrest for trespassing. She stormed out of the palace when she saw her ex-boyfriend holding hands with Aloi.
Unaraq explained to Aloi that they broke up a few weeks before he left to travel the world with Rong Yan. But refused to explain what happened after they broke up only vaguely mentioning that she was arrested for destruction of property. Unaraq also described his ex-lover as possessive and controlling. In the span of the next few weeks he convince Aloi that the people will love her and helped her overcome a bit of shyness when meeting smaller crowds.
After the scene she witnessed that was caused by Nuttatatik that led to her second arrest, Unirak declared Aloi a part of the Royal Family. And Unaraq carved a betrothal necklace for her. Uniting them both to be wed. Five years later, she's four months pregnant with Unaraq's child and was invited to Rong Yan and Yua's wedding in the Fire Nation. Unaraq attended Rong Yan's wedding and was seen sitting next to a five month pregnant Aloi, his father, and Palartok who was released from prison upon the request of the Avatar.
Abilities[]
Weapons[]
It is well known around the Southern Water Tribe, that Chief Unirak's son is fine warrior. He carries a traditional war club, and now carries a blade made by Earth Kingdom smith, that was crafted in a Northern Water Tribe style. Like many warriors from either tribe, when they have been disarmed by their opponent, they still have use of their arms. Unaraq is well trained in hand-to-hand combat although he does not use often. His survivability skills are top-notched and he grows, even more, smarter by the day. Traveling with the Avatar around the world has increased his knowledge in survivable, fighting off enemies and adapting to the different climates of the nations. Unaraq can also fish, so if they ever run out of food he can just go fish for food. Just like every other man in the Southern Water Tribe, Unaraq was taught how to hunt. His tracking skills are impressive as well, any army would be lucky to have him.
