By Cangse Sanren Part of the Phoenix Rising, Dying Embers continuity.

Toph Northuldra-Soren (née Beifong) is a young switch earthbending master born into the wealthy Beifong Family and the Avatar's earthbending teacher. She is one of the main protagonists of Phoenix Rising, the adopted daughter of Bato and Ozai, adopted younger sister of Zuko and Azula, adopted older half-sister of Maya and Melody, and the adopted great-granddaughter of Avatar Roku. Not long after Team Avatar came to Gaoling to find Ozai an earthbending teacher, they encountered Toph at the Earth Rumble VI. At the end of the war, she became the girlfriend and later wife of Aang. Twelve years after the end of the war, Aang and Toph had three children, Aura, the eldest and a dual earth and airbender, a son, Tempest, who was an airbender, and Celeste, an earthbender who was later gifted with the ability to airbend.

Background[]

Toph as a young child.

Toph as a young child.

Toph was born to Lao and Poppy Beifong in the city of Gaoling. Blind since birth, Toph grew up sheltered and treated as a piece of fragile glass that was about to break. At one point, when she was five or six years old, Toph ran away and met badgermoles, the original earthbenders. The toddler formed a connection with the beasts because they were blind just like her.

With their training, Toph learned earthbending, not only as a way of combat, but as an extent of her senses. She even developed her own sub skill of earthbending: seismic sense. With her newfound abilities, Toph eventually became one of the most talented earthbending prodigies in history. She kept this a secret from her parents because she thought that they wouldn't take her seriously. By the time she was twelve years old, Toph was a competitor in an earthbending fight club, which she was a champion of.

Aang and Toph on their wedding day

Toph loved Aang as much as he loved her. He didn't care that she was blind, because he loved her for who she was. This was an important factor in their relationship, and since they bend opposite elements, it made things all the more sweeter between them.
