The Story[]

Death[]

Death

we say this word with such apprehension

but for some, it means not

The Avatar is that someone

the avatar is born again,

to live again, and bend again,

Raava chooses another, and the Avatar becomes the past

The past life, the past voice, the past

When one dies, another is born, the cycle comes full circle

This happens now, yet again

One dies, while another is born

The Cycle[]

"Korra!" Asami ran to her wife's side, and caught her just as she fell to the ground. The Avatar was weak, and had been bedridden for weeks after being hit by a car. She had just finally gotten out of bed, against the protests of the head of the White Lotus, Asami, and now that very same head of the white lotus was carrying her back to the hospital.

Avatar Korra had been chasing the Red Monsoon Triad across Republic City, and had been hit by one of their escaping cars. She had been hit full across the chest by the car, and sent flying into a nearby building. Normally she would have just dodged, but she was 63, and her body wasn't what it used to be. To make things even worse, her polar bear dog, Unag, had been hit by another one of their cars after the two split up. Unag was her second polar bear dog, daughter of Naga, her first, but had died that day.

Asami ran faster, towards the hospital. It was only a block away, but it felt like an eternity. Korra was heavy, and pure dead weight as Asami carried her.

"Asami! What's wrong?!" A woman in a metal police officer suit ran up beside Asami. She was Toph Beifong the second, the chief of police, and the daughter of Opal Beifong and Bolin. "Korra, she-"

"Let me help! What do you want me to do?"

"Toph, I won't be able to get there as fast as you, so just run as fast as you can, I'll catch up!" Asami rested her wife's limp body in the Chief of Police's outstretched arms. Chief Beifong took off towards the hospital, while Asami Sato ran behind her.

They burst through the doors of the hospital, and ran upstairs to Korra's hospital room. Whatever doctors they passed recognized the Avatar, and called for help, so by the time they got upstairs, there were multiple doctors at the ready in her room. They hooked her up to different machines, and started pumping oxygen into her blood. When they had first entered the room, her oxygen saturation had been a deadly low seventy-nine.

Half an hour later, Korra's eyes opened. Her voice trembled, and was barely audible over the beeping of the machines. "Asami? Wha- what happened?"

"It's going to be okay, Korra. Kya is on her way here to work her healing on you. Just hang in a bit longer," Asami tried to sooth her wife, but Korra only squeezed her hand tighter.

"Asami, look at me. I'm not going to make it-"

"You have to! Kya's going to be her any minute, just hold on!"

"Asami." Korra shot her wife a cold look, silencing her protests; at least, it was meant to be cold. It just looked like she was dying. "I can feel it. If Katara was here, she might have been able to fix it, but she is long gone. It is something that not even the best healers in the world could fix. My chi paths are blocked and Raava knows that soon it will be time. I am only going to be going into the avatar state one last time. I can barely even feel the elements pulsing along with my heartbeat."

"Korra, we have to try! Kya might be able-"

"Asami. You have to accept it. You will mourn me, but you cannot be overcome by your grief. The world needs you. You need to find the next avatar, and find them masters to teach them. It is your duty as the head of the White Lotus, and you cannot forget it. I love you Asami."

Tears rolled down Asami's cheeks. She buried her head in Korra's blankets, and sobbed. Korra's eyes closed, and she stopped. She stopped breathing; her heart stopped beating; her life withered away until all that was left was a cold, still body. Right at that moment, Kya arrived, but it was far too late for the Avatar. All she could do was comfort the sobbing head of the White Lotus.

Asami stood up, pressed her lips against Korra's cold ones, and turned to walk out of the room. It was too painful for Asami to bear, seeing the love of her life still, without a single drop of energy inside of her. However, before she could leave the room, something miraculous happened.

Korra's eyes shot open, shooting two blinding columns of light out of her eyes and into the dark sky. A spirit, that looked exactly like Korra, seemed to sit up, and float away from the Avatar's body. She floated towards Asami.

"I love you more than anything, Asami. Do not let my death ruin you. Goodbye, my love." Korra's spirit kissed Asami gently on the mouth, and then seemed to change shape. She no longer looked like a human, but more like Raava, the spirit of light. This spirit floated through the ceiling and into the dark sky, and the light radiating from Korra's body vanished.

Or the light that the people in that hospital room in Republic City could see vanished. Hundreds of miles away, a boy was born to Earth Nation parents with glowing eyes, the exact same moment Avatar Korra's eyes stopped glowing.
