By Kassilon Part of the The Legend of Xiao continuity.

Pei is a nonbender companion to Avatar Xiao. She was instrumental in his discovery, and joined him in his journey to master all four elements.

History[]

Pei was born in an upper-middle class family in the neighborhood by Kyoshi Bridge. Her grandfather is the editor of The Republic Reporter, and her father had a high-ranking managerial job in the press thanks to his family connections. Her mother has had a long-standing career as an online influencer. Her father passed away from an aneurysm just before her seventeenth birthday, causing her grades to plummet at school. She easily made friends with Xiao, another outcast in her grade.

She has taken self-defense classes since she was very young, in the Kyoshi Island style. She began to learn chi-blocking when she reached an advanced level, and used the technique on Xiao as they sparred in gym class one day. While Coach Chang egged Xiao on to focus on positive jing, he firebent at Pei, in an event that would reveal him as the new Avatar. After Pei was treated by the school nurse, she and Xiao skipped school, and she tried to comfort him about settling into his new role as the Avatar.

Weeks later, Pei managed to find Xiao just before he was ready to be sent to Zaofu to improve his earthbending, and joined him, claiming it'd be a great way for her to pass the summer. With no real role to play in his earthbending training, Wuji Beifong's deputy Samati spoke of finding her a temporary job. Excited that Samati oversaw the city's construction, Pei signed up for a job, and learned how to use power armor to carry materials of up to ten times her own weight. She was there with Xiao when the scandal broke about his mother's expenses before Wuji announced the Avatar's journey to the south to get away from the media's attention.

Pei mostly kept training under Samati during this time, and by the time Xiao returned to Zaofu, she learned about him entering the reflexive Avatar State. When he was permitted to start learning in the Fire Nation, she joined him, although quickly tired of having little to do around the palace. However, Princess Sazara proposed she sign up for intensive chi-blocking courses at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, which she wholeheartedly enjoyed: even if the sort of students at the academy were a little too snooty. She kept sparring with Xiao, and got him to firebend despite the Fire Lord intentionally keeping Xiao's progress slow and measured: thanks to her standing up to the sovereign, the friends were to be separated again when the Fire Lord asked Xiao to journey across the Fire Nation.

Personality[]

Pei is a peppy and humorous character, and an extrovert at heart. She is an empathetic and compassionate individual, comforting Xiao about his new role as the Avatar even after she had just been burned by his firebending.
