Mulan Beifong was a member of the noble Beifong family. She became famous for joining the Earth Kingdom Army and fighting against Shikai's rebellion, becoming a captain of the local troops, and became a folk hero for her heroism, courage, bravery, and extraordinary feats.

History[]

Mulan was born into the Beifong family, as they were growing in influence and wealth. Unlike her quiet sister, Hulan, Mulan was lively and eager to fight, so her father hired a master of swordsmanship and archery to train her.

When she was sixteen, a fairly large rebellion broke out in the Earth Kingdom under General Shikai, who wanted to overthrow the reigning Earth King Tichei. The State of Gaoling sided with the Earth King and mobilization began. Mulan's father, Hua, could not send anyone to war, as his son was only four years old. This meant that under the law of the time, he had to go into the army himself. Mulan refused and went alone.

The recruiter at the Gaoling Royal Garrison, Yugoshi, recruited Mulan because he knew her and her father well, and was a friend of the Beifong family. He knew that Hua was no warrior and would not fare well in battle, but he knew Mulan's abilities, so he sent her to Muhong Province, where she received additional military training at Mibao Fortress.

Mulan's first battle was the battle of Shurong. General Shikai's forces destroyed the Earth Army, and most of the commanders, including General Beigong, were killed in the battle. The retreating forces were led by Prince Zaifeng, the youngest son of Earth King Tichei. Mulan and Zaifeng became friends during their long journey, and the prince admired Mulan's courage and determination.

As the war continued, Mulan rose to the rank of captain. Zaifeng fell in love with Mulan after spending two years with her. The final battle of the civil war was the battle of Ba Sing Se. The battle was expected to be a large, long, and difficult campaign, which could be followed by a long siege. However, after half an hour of fighting, the rebel forces began to retreat when Mulan shot Shikai with her bow when she saw him in the distance, leading to his death. The rebels fell into chaos with the loss of their commander, and the Earth King Tichei quickly destroyed them.

Mulan had to go back to Gaoling. Prince Zaifeng wanted to go with her and asked his father for permission to marry Mulan. Tichei agreed because the Beifong family was quite wealthy so he knew he wouldn't be handing his son over to a lowly family, and he didn't need Zaifeng in the royal court because he already had four sons so the king wasn't in danger of not having an heir anyway, and he knew Zaifeng and knew he wouldn't be able to handle court intrigues.

Mulan returned to Gaoling, where her worried father was waiting for her, but he was very surprised that Mulan had not only become a war heroine, but was also to be married to the royal prince. Shortly after her wedding to Zaifeng, Mulan received word that she had been promoted to leader of the Gaoling Royal Garrison.

Legacy[]

Mulan became a folk hero, especially in the State of Gaoling. Avatar Kyoshi invoked her as a role model when training the first Kyoshi Warriors.
