Chapter Ninety-Four: Last Hope[]
She hears the rumble of the sky bison, and she glances up to see Appa.
Appa.
The sky bison lands, and she raises herself in a wave to land on top of Appa's head.
Her brother yells, "Katara? What's going on? We have to—" She lifts her head to gaze at Sokka, and her brother's eyes widen. "Oh no."
The others try to speak to her, but she doesn't understand them.
"What's wrong?"
"We have the Earth King! Katara?"
"Why is—what's with Twinkle Toes? Katara? Why isn't he breathing?"
"What? He's not breathing?"
"Oh, this is horrible!"
She cannot listen.
She cannot speak.
She cannot see.
Laying him down so carefully on the bison's arrow, clenching him, she whispers, "Yip yip."
The tears come.
She lifts him and inspects his back.
The scar seems to throb as she watches.
She winces.
The spirit water.
Her last hope.
I wasn't there when the Fire Nation attacked my people. I'm going to make a difference this time.
I wasn't there when the Fire Nation killed my mother. I'm going to make a different this time.
All of her hopes and fears, resting on the water, on the vial.
She bends it, ever so carefully, and begins to heal him.
The water spirals into a circle.
A loop.
Glowing.
She brings her hand to his scar, and the water sinks in. Disappears.
It's gone.
He's gone.
My last hope . . .
Her eyes close, and she shivers.
My last hope . .
He's gone.
His arrow glows a soft white, and her heart squeezes.
Relaxes.
Squeezes.
Relaxes.
Oh please . . . spirits . . . he's the world's last hope. Tears trickle down her faced. He's my last hope. Please. Spirits . . . don't do this. Don't take him away from me. You already took away my mother. Don't take Aang away, too.
Please.
Spirits.
She hears a soft little noise; his eyelids flicker, then open.
He smiles.
A little half-smile.
And he makes a noise.
Somewhere between a laugh and a groan.
"Ka . . ." he murmurs.
She embraces him tightly, and she can feel his heart beating with life.
Life.
Aang . . .
You're back.
The tears flow down her cheeks and onto his shoulder, wetting it, but neither of them care.
She smiles through her tears, and her heart beats.
His heart beats.
Their hearts beat in time, spelling out a single message.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
She embraces him again, tightly, so tightly, because she can't believe it, and the tears come like rivers, flowing on and on, like life, and because she's afraid that she'll lose him again.
His eyelids flutter again, and he fades into unconsciousness, but she knows . . . she knows in her heart . . . that he will be okay.
Aang . . .
She smiles and kisses his cheek, so gently.
A promise.
You're back.
Notes[]
I promised myself I wouldn't do another one from 220 . . . but oh well. x.x
