| "It doesn't matter how bleak the circumstances are, there's always a bright side!" |
| — Kya's optimistic attitude |
Kya Pathuk, also referred to by her grandchildren as "Gran-Gran", is the mother of Sokka and Katara and the wife of Hakoda, the chief of their village at the Southern Water Tribe and emperor of the South Pole. She is the mother-in-law of Zuko and Azula and the grandmother of their daughters, Saoirse, Kiara, Amaya Pathuk, and Kida. Kya is also the former empress of the South Pole, proceeding her son-in-law, Zuko.
History[]
Early life and adulthood[]
When she was a teenager, Kya was just like Katara.
As a young girl, Kya once had a childhood friend, Kiko, who was trapped and killed by a snowstorm while the two were young children. Katara told the story in order to scare her friends, making it unclear whether the events occurred or not. For most of her teenage years, Kya was just like her daughter, Katara; strong, brave, a fiery temper, determined, occasionally sassy, and a tendency to mother everyone. These qualities not only made her a skilled warrior, but it also made her the most sought out girl in their tribe.
Kya loved to play with Hakoda when they were young, often teasing him and defending him and Bato when some of the older children picked on them. The trio became close like siblings following that and always had each other's backs. In her later life, Kya married Hakoda and gave birth to two children: Sokka and Katara. Whenever her daughter, Katara, became ill with a cold, Kya made a special paste out of blubber and pepper berries and rubbed it on her little girl's chest, which was always effective.
When she saw the condition Ozai was in, Kya shed tears for him.
In about 94 AG, Kya and her family met Ozai and his children, who traveled to their village to seek refuge. For six years, Kya became a close friend of Ozai and his family, treating the former like another brother, and once she learned of his pregnancy, Kya started training her children in midwifery, in case they needed to deliver the baby and there were no healers nearby.
Relationships[]
Katara[]
Kya shared a very close relationship with her daughter
Out of all her family members, Kya shared a closer relationship with her youngest child, as the two were able to bond over things they had in common. Both of them had a love for singing, but they loved hearing Ozai sing more, as his voice was able to put anyone to sleep.
