Chapter Fifty-Eight: Kick in the Head[]

He stares at her, his eyes dark with fury.

Overhead, the swelling clouds promise a storm.

"Look, Aang, I already told you earlier," she says almost angrily. "I had nothing to do with Zuko. I told you that!"

"Well I don't know!" he shoots back. "You and him in that little cave of yours?! I'd forgotten all about it. You know, maybe because I was dead?! But oh, now I remember. You and Zuko, all cuddly together, and you were . . ."

A shudder passes through his body.

His voice drops.

Dangerously.

"You were caressing his scar," he murmurs, almost half-terrified of his own realization. "You were . . . spirits . . ."

Her eyes narrow. "Me? Caressing—what?! Aang, do you even hear yourself?! I was saying that I could have healed his scar, Aang. Nothing happened. We just talked about . . . you know . . ." She lowers her gaze. "We talked about our . . . our moms . . . and how they . . ."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot," he snaps, furious enough to be cruel. "I forgot that you and Zuko got to be all peachy with each other because you two both lost your moms. It's not like I lost my whole people or anything!" His hands shake in his livid rage. "But no, I didn't lose my mom. You're right. I have no business interfering with your relationship! Because you two have so much in common!"

Everything is suddenly silent.

A deep, petrifying silent.

He immediately understands his error. "I'm sorry, Katara. I know you didn't do anything. I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said." He takes a step towards her, and she pulls away, shaking her head from side to side. In the dim glow of the moonlit courtyard, he can see the silent tears shining on her cheeks.

"No, please, Katara, I didn't mean it, I swear. I was just angry," he stammers. "You know me. I wouldn't talk like that! I'm sorry, Katara! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!"

She takes another step back, her clear eyes wide with something, an emotion he cannot name. "I can't believe you . . ."

He reaches out a hand, and she slaps it away. "Katara, I didn't mean to. I know that nothing happened between you and Zuko. I mean, doesn't he have that other girl? Mai? I know that nothing happened. I just can't help but be paranoid. Because of what happened with Jet . . ."

She turns on him, her grief suddenly switched to anger. "Oh, so I'm just not allowed to like anyone else?! Well excuse me!"

"No, that's not what I meant—"

Her glare is enough to silence him.

She swivels on her heel and stalks off; he can hear the thunder crash.

The rain begins to fall, so softly.

He collapses to his knees, spent, defeated.

I'm sorry, Katara . . .
