Iroh is the former Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, a dominant firebending master, and a wise mentor to his niece and nephew, Zuko and Azula. He was the elder son of Fire Lord Azulon and Ilah, the older brother of Ursa, and the brother-in-law of Ozai. Iroh is also the adopted uncle/in-law of Toph Beifong and Aang, and adotped/great-uncle of Saoirse, Amaya, Aura, and Tempest. Unlike his younger sister, who was ruthless and merciless, Iroh is determined, calm, and spiritual. He was heavily favored by Azulon, after his mother, Illah, died five years after Ursa was born, and it went to his head, leading Iroh to borderline neglecting his little sister, who succumbed to a mental illness.
After the traumatic death of his son, Iroh saw Zuko and Azula as his own children rather than his niece and nephew, and encouraged them to choose the right choices and do whatever made them happy rather than a fate members of the royal family expected of them. During the years prior to the banishment of Zuko, Ozai, and Azula, Iroh had a particularly close relationship with the three of them and saw Ozai as the brother that he always wanted.

Iroh was born as the oldest and only son of Azulon and Ilah, the older brother of Ursa, and grandson of Fire Lord Sozin. He was formerly the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, and destined to become the new Fire Lord.
