| By Ash Witherspoon | Part of the Absolute Sword continuity. |
Elaine Kamikaze was a female Air Nomad born in 12 BG and the Avatar during the century-long conflict known as the Hundred Year War. Her immediate predecessor was Avatar Roku, and her immediate successor is Avatar Korra. As the Avatar of her time, she was highly skilled in all four elements, displaying a new style of bending known as Spatial Bending; which enables a Bender to bend the environment around them to their will. The titular protagonist of the Absolute Sword continuity, Elaine replaces Aang as the Avatar thus leading to a different path, this path could be considered an alternate universe. She is a master in Energybending using it to remove Lord Ozai's bending and render him a non-bender.
Shortly before the beginning of the Hundred Year War, Elaine was frozen in a iceberg for a hundred years just by falling off a balcony and never being found by the Southern Air Monks who had raised her after she was taken to the Southern Air Temple; she emerged, still biologically twelve years old, into a world engulfed by war. During her absence, the Fire Nation had waged war upon the other nations and managed to completely wipe out the pacifist Air Nomads, eliminating them from society. As the last airbender and the Avatar, it was her duty to defeat the Fire Lord, and master the other Three Elements using them to bring peace and balance to her war-ravaged world. Despite being a female who faced criticism for her gender, she was undoubtedly a powerful Airbender who though powerful in the spiritual aspects of her Avatar powers, was weighed down by the immense burdens she carried as the Avatar to restore peace and balance to her world. Despite that, Elaine tried to remain positive and managed to keep her friends safe with her bending. A selfless individual, she was a powerful bender who was considered to be one of the greatest legends known to Air Nomads by way of her six children. After she emerged victorious against the Phoenix King, Elaine entered into a romantic relationship with Zuko. The couple eventually married and raised a family of six children: Izumi, a firebender, Lydia, a airbender, Penna and Kendal twin sisters and nonbenders, Kelsey, a firebender and a airbender, and Sasha, a nonbender.
History[]
Early Life[]
Elaine was born to two Air Nomads in 12 BG. For much of her young childhood she remained unaware that she was the Avatar. After her childhood sweetheart Rin was about to be killed by a falling rock, Elaine displayed her prowess and used Earthbending to save Rin's life thus confirming her identity as the Avatar. As normal benders can only bend one element, this was enough to confirm her identity. The Monks of the Southern Air Temple took her away keeping the fact that she was the Avatar a secret from her or at least trying to as Elaine had already guessed based on Rin's reaction that she was probably somebody important to the Monks based on their reverence of Elaine. As she grew up, her mastery in the spiritual arts and creation of many airbending techniques earned her the sacred airbending master tattoos at only 8 years old, making her the youngest airbending master in Air Nomad history. Her dedication to mastering Airbending techniques got in her way of making lasting connections with people, leading to Elaine maintaining her distance with other people. Unlike her fellow Air Nomads, she was quite a lonely person, maintaining her distance with others as to avoid personal affection. When she was just 10, the Monks told her that she was the Avatar which Elaine understood and took well. Her distance with others helped to elevate Elaine into a new stage of her development as the Avatar, savior of the Four Nations. Though her burden was great, Elaine showed enormous strength in dealing with it. Treated like all of the other Air Nomads, Elaine was a competent airbender who showed coldness when dealing with obstacles by drawing upon her inner peace and unleashing it. One day while having fun together, Rin and Elaine were caught in an unexpected storm while riding their shared flying bison, Juniper and were knocked into the water. Rin died from a combination of hypothermia and her body systems shutting down in response to the water itself. However, Rin's body would survive being encased in ice after her death by Elaine activating her Avatar State saving her and their flying bison Juniper
Winter 99 AG[]
One hundred years later, Elaine was found and freed from the iceberg by siblings Katara and Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe. Coldly turning down their request to be friends, Elaine set to work burying Rin's stone-cold body mourning her in silence. Eventually, Elaine is persuaded into becoming shaky allies with the two Water Tribe siblings and slowly becomes enamored by their funny stories. When Prince Zuko arrives at the Southern Water Tribe and takes a girl hostage to lure the Avatar out, Elaine refuses to unveil herself as the Avatar much to the anger of Sokka and Katara. Eventually, however Elaine is persuaded by her own guilty conscience and reveals herself protecting the girl and revealing her identity as the Avatar. To protect the Southern Water Tribe, Elaine engages in a battle with Zuko which ends up with Elaine surrendering to protect the Southern Water Tribe. When Zuko starts to gloat about his victory over the Avatar, Elaine reprimands him before following his soldiers into the bridge of the ship sparing Katara and Sokka a simple nod, a gesture that resonates with the two siblings. Depositing Elaine into a cell Zuko watches over the female Avatar to make sure that she will not escape. Iroh joins them and decides to ask questions to the female Avatar, the first question being "As the Avatar what are your goals and dreams." Elaine simply replies with "My duty as the Avatar is to restore peace and balance to the Four Nations. Nothing more nothing less. I am simply a vessel for the greater good. I pledge myself to this cause because it is my duty as the Avatar." The answer both surprises Iroh and saddens him.
