Chief Cupun is a minor character in the fanon Avatar: The Legacy of Rong Yan, and is the chief of the Northern Water Tribe and the father of Tulok, Prince of the Northern Water Tribe.

History[]

Cupun, was born to Chief Nanuq and Chieftess Kya in the year 705 BG, his father was dies of a heart attack in 703 BG. His mother Kya takes the throne as Regent Queen until her son becomes of age to take the throne. In 690 BG, Cupun takes the crown as the chief of the Northern Water Tribe.

In 680 BG, his wife dies at childbirth leaving Cupun with his son he named Tulok. The Northern Water Tribe had a crown prince that day. While his mother became an ambassador for peace with the Qiangda Kingdom while Cupun reigned as chief. Recovering and rebuilding his nation, his son Tulok was raised in an era of peace.

Meeting the Avatar[]

The Avatar had finally arrived to his nation, welcoming the Avatar with open arms he had gathered the group for a meeting within his palace. The chief needed to be informed with everything that the young Avatar and his friends had been through.

Assassination of a Royal[]

When Amak's body was found and the investigation deemed it to be an assassination, Cupun anointed Noa in charge of what happens next. The unrest occurred in Cupun's palace an hour later, Ambassador Dashi was accused of espionage and arrested despite having diplomatic immunity. Elder Noa and the other nobles agreed to debate on what occurs next in his estate. He even went as far as to threaten Ambassador Thod and Avatar Rong Yan with arrest.

The next morning while Cupun and Tulok were in a meeting with the Court of Elders. Sokka and the other guards found Amak's body after a woman discovered it in the alley. The investigations done by the other guards after Sokka left suspected that white jade poison was used.

The test consisted of a droplet of white jade poison mixing with a drop of blood if it coagulated then it was the poison the man suspected. Sokka had run to Elder Noa's estate to find Cupun and Tulok and give them the grim news.

The royal guards found the planted evidence the dagger of Qianda Kingdom design, the passports and the scroll with the forged signature of Earth King Qiang Zhen.

When Sokka arrived to the meeting he disrupted it to speak with the chief and the prince. After he gave the news it sparked outrage and panic amongst the elders. Which led to events that Cupun and Tulok were unaware of while they arranged the burial of their fallen relative.

Ashuna and her temple workers received the body from the guards who carried it there, she investigated the body where she called an old friend of hers. An alchemist that specialized in poisons named Mamittuk. Mamittuk identified the poison with the same method that the royal guard used as a white jade plant.

When Cupun and his family were escorted to the prayer room, Yakone one of the young seers gave Cupun a vision. Yakone became the medium for Torngark and La who warned Cupun of treachery within the tribe and a war with the Qiangda Kingdom. Cupun accepted the prediction from the future but forgot about it when it came to the burial of his nephew and the wedding of his son.

When the family arrived she performed all the needed rituals to prepare the body for burial and the soul toward the afterlife. After the rituals were done the body was buried in a cavern near the spirit forest above the city of Aupaluk. Where every royal was buried even to the very first chief himself.

Treachery in the Tribe[]

When Cupun looked for Rong Yan and Thod, Elder Noa lied to him and said he sent Rong Yan to Ba Sing Se with Dashi to speak with the Earth King. He was unaware of where Thod was. A report arrived to Noa from Sokka. While the nation's deportations went smoothly with only a few being arrested, and there were also ten casualties of daofei who attacked the soldiers in Uvliruk, Anugi region.

Cupun held a meeting with Naartok, Unirak, Anatkuk, and Unaraq and wanted to share the news with Unirak. Aloi arrived to interrupt the meeting to bring the bad news to Cupun when she reported the information he thought she lied to him. Naartok spoke up and vouched for Aloi claiming her information as truth.

This angered Cupun, he called for Thod, Rong Yan, Dashi, Siku, and Sokka. The guards relayed to him that Noa had Sokka arrest Dashi, and Rong Yan, and deport citizens across the North Pole. Cupun remembered when the seer in the city's kashim warned him of treachery in the tribe. The Demon King of Trickery's prediction of the future became reality.

Elder Siku shared what she remembered from the events that occurred while Amak's body was being buried and while Cupun mourned for his nephew's death and prepared for his son's wedding. Dashi and Rong Yan were released from prison by Warden Sangok. Sokka revealed the threats from Elder Noa, and said he was forced to complete orders are he'd be arrested for refusing orders.

The deportations went smoothly while only ten civilians were killed, which angered Cupun even more. He sent Dashi to Ba Sing Se and called for Noa to appear, he chewed Elder Noa out and told him he endangered the tribe and was now a traitor. Cupun had Noa arrested for treason, which was punishable by death.

Instead of going with the court right away, Cupun focused on his son's wedding first. The afternoon after the wedding Elder Noa's trial occurred. Everyone who was wronged by Noa testified against him. Warden Sangok was ordered to execute Dashi and imprison the Avatar for twenty-five years and never speak of it.

When the witnesses testified against Noa, the Court of Elders was proven innocent and released while Noa was proven guilty and given an execution. In his final effort, Noa challenged Cupun to an Atanerkugia, a challenge for the throne. Which placed the chiefdom and inheritance of Prince Tulok on the line.

Royal Wedding[]

Cupun was present at Tulok and Tanaraq's wedding, where Tulok married Tanaraq and unified the relations between both tribes. Which three years later, was the reason the Southern Tribe joined the North in the war against the Qiangda Kingdom.

Atanerkugia[]

An atanerkugia was a challenge for the throne the first occurred when the youngest son of a chief felt the older son was incompetent and weak to rule. He challenged the heir and won the duel, killing his own brother for power. Many duels have happened in the history of the Northern Water Tribe. The current chief during the time of Avatar Keirou had mercy for an old friend, the loyalists were banished with the conspirator. Thus the Water Tribe split into two tribes, and the loyalists fled to the South Pole.

The rules were simple it was a fight to the death if two waterbenders were the duelists or two non-benders the fight will continue as usual. If one opponent was a bender and a non-bender, the bender was chi-blocked as dueling a non-bender as a bender in the ritualistic duel was considered cheating.

Both men were allowed to choose weapons from a rack, the royal guardsmen circled one side with spears while the challenger's guards did on the other side with their spears. In this case, Cupun's guards were on the southern side while Noa's estate guards were on the northern side. Each guard held a spear the purpose of the circle was to prevent a coward from fleeing the duel.

The city's shaman is a part of the ritual as well, the Elder and his/hers shaman will play instruments for ambiance and thrilling purposes but to invoke the opponent's patron deities to assist them in battle. Yakone was the most important in the ritual duel he beat the drums. After a few minutes, Yakone would beat the drum in a sequence of beats when this occurred the circle of spears would grow smaller. Eventually, the circle would shrink small enough for close-quarter combat would occur and the challenge or chief couldn't run around.

The circle was only about half its size, Noa grew overconfident after he sliced Cupun on the side. Instead of Chief Cupun impaled Noa on his blade and mortally wounded the councilman. After he won the duel Siku healed Cupun while Noa was surrounded by his son Gilik and his wife. Chief Cupun stripped Gilik of his seat in the council but allowed the young man and his mother to remain in their estate and permitted them to keep their business and lands.

Declaration of War[]

After Siku was promoted to adviser she closely watched and advised Cupun. Eventually came a letter from Hegumen R'Kang, requesting for Cupun to meet with Qiang Zhen at the Baiyan Air Temple.

When they flew over the northern coast of Hankou province they saw the Northern loyalists who set up their outpost on the coast. They continued to the air temple where the peace talks were being held. Both world leaders disagreed amongst themselves and the Earth King declared war on the Northern Water Tribe. Even threatening him by raiding Aupaluk, Siku hugged a teared up Dashi promising her the peace will come again soon.
