| "It is a family and a community. Its members are citizens of Qinchao and subjects of the Earth Kingdom. The Chin clan is one of a kind." |
| — Gaoshu about the Chin clan. |
The Chin clan is the family and community that lives and governs Qinchao Village. They make up the majority of the town's population.
History[]
The Chin clan was founded by the man who also founded Qinchao Village, and his given name was Chin, which is why later generations called him Chin the Founder. The family included Chin himself, as well as his relatives and descendants, and later the clan expanded with new generations, as well as new citizens who married into the Chin family or were adopted.
During the era of Genro, Lady Lisi of the Chin clan, daughter of the then Chin, was a friend and lover of Avatar Genro, and her father was eager to offer advice to the Avatar. At that time, the Avatar was a fairly respected figure in Qinchao Village.
For most of its history, the Chin clan, like Qinchao Village as a whole, was self-sufficient and generally did not involve itself in kingdom or worldly affairs. Nevertheless, members of the Chin clan occasionally traveled and pursued careers outside of Qinchao. Lord Gaoshu became a professor in the Department of History at Ba Sing Se University, and his brother, Lord Zhushu, became a famous architect in the capital.
During the era of Kyoshi, Qinchao Village began to have economic problems due to the actions of the daofei and the Yellow Neck Uprising. The Chin clan was terrified by what was happening in the central Earth Kingdom and feared that the Yellow Necks or more brutal daofei groups would come south and eventually reach Qinchao. The family members felt calm when they heard of the destruction of the Yellow Necks at Zhulu Pass, and the villagers began to praise Jianzhu. After Jianzhu's duel with Kyoshi and Yun, which resulted in the collapse of the local Yujing's Tea House, the citizens of Qinchao blamed Kyoshi for everything and wanted to capture her, but the Avatar escaped from the village's law enforcement.
Chengji, known as Chin the Great and Chin the Conqueror, was the most famous member of the Chin clan in history, famous for his successful conquest of the Earth Kingdom.
After Kyoshi was officially revealed as the Avatar, the Chin clan stopped respecting the Avatar as much as they had before. In 287 BG, Chengji became the next Chin. The new marquis of Qinchao Village observed the situation in the country and finally decided that he had a chance to fulfill his ambitions. Many of the Earth Kingdom's elite had been killed by Jianzhu, and the reign of the 46th Earth King was greatly disliked by the citizens of the Earth Lands, so Chin considered the situation to be ideal. In 280 BG, Chin traveled to the northwestern Earth Kingdom, to Panluan Island. There, he gathered his first forces and began his rebellion, which later turned into the conquest of the Earth Kingdom.
After ten years of war, Chin had conquered almost all of the Earth Kingdom, winning numerous battles against the Earth Kingdom Army, including the second battle of Llamapaca's Crossing, in which Chin humiliated General Ran-Roe, after which the 46th Earth King barricaded himself in Ba Sing Se. However, Chin approached Yokoya and ordered the Yokoyans to surrender. Avatar Kyoshi then separated her peninsula from the continent, creating Kyoshi Island, and Chin stubbornly refused to move away, falling when the cliff beneath him collapsed. Also in both villages, Chin began to be called "Chin the Great" and "Emperor Chin".
After Chin's death, his empire fell, and his commanders, whom he had placed in charge of local areas, were overthrown. Chin's supporters founded Chin Village, named after him, on the site where he had died. The Chin clan hated Kyoshi even more, and this hatred of the Avatar in Chin Village was shared in Qinchao Village, so Avatar Day festival was celebrated in both towns.
Qinchao Village remained relatively peaceful for the next few years until the assassination of Earth Queen Hou-Ting and a period of anarchy began. The region was then besieged by bandits, and relations between Qinchao Village and Chin Village improved as the villagers of both villages believed that united, they would survive. Eventually, the unification of the Earth Kingdom was initiated by Interim President Kuvira. The Chin at the time was delighted with the peace Kuvira brought and became her supporter, recognizing her as a stateswoman and national hero. Even after her regime fell, the Chin clan remained a supporter of the Earth Empire.
Culture[]
The Chin clan makes up the majority of the citizens of Qinchao Village.
Traditionally, the head of the Chin clan abandons his name and takes the name "Chin" (秦), and when he distinguished himself in history, he was given a nickname.
Over half of the village's inhabitants belonged to the Chin clan, making outsiders feel as if they were talking to the same person.
The Chin clan is very stubborn and it is difficult to change their minds. Their hatred of the Avatar is a prime example of this, as it remains within the Chin clan to this day. After the Hundred Year War, Avatar Aang came to Qinchao to improve the Avatar's reputation there, but to no avail. After the defeat of Commander Guan, Avatar Korra and Asami Sato also came to Qinchao to repair the Avatar's reputation there, as well as to convince the locals to stop supporting the Earth Empire, but the clan members were unmoved, and Korra's relationship with Asami did not make things any easier for Korra.
The Chin clan also maintains conservative sentiments in Qinchao Village, which is why the villagers were displeased with Korra and Asami being a couple.
