If anyone doubted her avatarhood, they wouldn't now. Because she could whirl air and water above their heads now. She was Szeto's reincarnation. She was the Avatar.

Prologue[]

Yangchen stood before a herd of 40 baby sky bison. She knew that she could only have one to keep as her own. But she liked all of them. One baby walked slowly up to her and stared up meaningfully for food. She laughed and pulled an apple out of her pocket to give to the baby bison.

"Aren't you cute, little one!" she said, chuckling. She had only seen the herd of baby bison this morning when Sister Nyima had brought them all the way from the Eastern Air Temple.

"So, is this the one Yangchen," asked Nyima. Yangchen waited for a minute before replying,"Yes, yes he is." Ever since the invasion of the Earth Kingdom in 600 BG, there was a drastic drop in Air Bison as the Earth King demanded all of the animals who could bend except the badgermoles were to be wiped out. They might have succeeded too, if the other three nations hadn't joined together to save their sacred species.

The Earth Kingdom had successfully taken the whole North Water Tribe and was heading to the south pole where it was attacked with ships from the other three nations. Even in peacetime, the sacred species were still on the brink of extinction. And she could do nothing about it. Even though she was just a regular Air Nomad nun, she always believed that someday she could do something to change the world. Something that could save the world.

Chapter 1[]

Yangchen stood combing her bison. It had been two years since it had been announced that she was the Avatar, Master of All Elements, Bringer of Peace. All she really was was an 18 year old girl with an already long name, that just got way longer. Everyone treated her like a saint, except Jesa. The two had been friends since they were seven. She was the only one who treated Yangchen for what she really was, a normal girl.

"You still haven't named your sky bison. Yangchen, it's been five years. How would you like it to be called ‘the sky bison', seriously, you need to name him." Jesa's words woke her up.

"He doesn't need a name, besides, I ended up calling my lemurs Pik and Pak, I'm terrible at naming pets", Yangchen said.

"Well in that case, I'll just have to give you some inspiration."

" Inspiration!"

" Exactly. How about Pingpeng"

" It sounds like Pingpong. No way I'm naming him that!"

" Okay then how about Jeongjeong"

" You're not going to give up are you Jesa!"

" Nope."

" Well then, maybe we could call him..."

"Snotty"

"Jesa!"

"Sorry, Avatar. My most sincere apologies"

"Not you too!"

Yangchen and Jesa stared at each other before erupting into laughter. " He's so fluffy at this time of year. Its like he's a giant Fluffball"

"Pabu! Great Name"

"Yinyang"

"What"

" I'm going to call him Yinyang".

"Why?"

" The Yin Yang is the symbol of ultimate balance. It originates from the Northern Water Tribe. Their saying is: Tui and La, the ocean and moon have always circled each other in an eternal since forever. They balance each other. Push and Pull, Life and Death, Light and Dark, Good and Evil, Yin and Yang."

She was here. The best waterbending master in the world. But also the fiercest and most sought after. Kendra of the Northern Water Tribe. Yangchen was lucky that she travelled to the Western Air Temple to meet her, as Kendra had never left her home in all 18 years of her life. But she also knew she would have to go back to the North Pole with Kendra, to master the skill of waterbending. That was the way it worked. You had go learn the elements in the never ending line of placement; Earth, Fire, Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Air, Water. This meant that Yangchen would first have to go to the North Pole to master the element of water with the Northern Tribe, then go into the depths of the Earth Kingdom to see the earthbending master in Ba Sing Se, and then travel to the volcanic regions of the Fire Nation, where she would meet the greatest of all the firebending masters. Yet all she could do at the moment was pack. She wasn't allowed to bring any earthly attachments, so all she could bring was her airbending robes, glider and her mothers airbending necklace.

In short, all the things that would bee needed for her survival. But the worst part of leaving wasn't saying farewell to some of her possessions and animal friends, though she would miss them greatly, but saying goodbye to Jesa. The chances were, they would never see each other again. Until she spoke to Kendra. Kendra was the Chieftess of the Northern Water Tribe and a fierce warrior. She was with five other people who looked like they were from the Water Tribes and one other that looked slightly different. She wasn't given time to ponder the issue.

" Yangchen, I know we agreed that we were going in the morning but I have... important business to attend to. Some of my people have been killed and it seems the assassin has escaped. Where is your airbender friend, we really must get going," said Kendra. Her voice shook the earth.

" I'll... Go and get her. Be right back," said Yangchen before running off. All of Kendra's companions started shouting and running after her, telling her she had to leave. Except the unusual one. The unusual girl stayed silent and just stood there, watching her run off.  As soon as she mentioned Jesa, Yangchen realised that she could come with her. Together! Yangchen ran round to the other side of the temple to where Jesa lived. She slammed the door open and walked into the room. It was deserted. Jesa was nearly always in here. She then reasoned that if Jesa was anywhere else, Nyima would know. But she did not. Only then did Yangchen start panicking.

" Where is she, she should've been here by now,"Yangchen said looking around and praying she would see Jesa's glider. But it never came. Then Sister Pena came into the room.

" Yangchen, I don't know how to put this, but the Water Tribe assassin snuck onto the bison from the South Pole and a few people are dead. And one of them Yangchen, one of them was, it was Jesa," Pena said. "Yangchen, I'm so sorry."

Jesa, gone forever because of the low security standards of the Northern Water Tribe. She could never get her friend back. Gone. Before anyone could react, she ran off to the stables. She talked to her bison as she brushed him.

" Jesa's gone, Yingyang. Forever. But she believed I was the avatar from day one. The least I can do is go out there and master the elements, for her, like she always dreamed I would. I'll make Jessa proud."

And then Yangchen set off, to pack for the Northern Water Tribe and set off as soon as possible. For Jess. She had a new light in her eyes. She was going to master all of the elements. There was no going back. So she set off, determined to prove herself to the world. And to never trust the silent ones.
Flying with Yinyang, she wondered if she did the right thing. At the beginning of the flight, she was exited and eager, so she started reading some old Air Nomad books on the legacy of the water tribe. However, one hour in and she wanted to bash the book on Yingyang's saddle. Two hours in, she wanted to bash her head on the saddle. The writing didn't sound like the Water Tribes at all. It was highlighting their wrongdoings, and skipping all the important peacekeeping events, which Air Nomads usually treasured. However, Nyima wanted her to read the book, and she knew it would of disheartened her to see Yangchen throw the book into the never ending mass of ocean beneath Yinyang. She was flicking through the final chapters when she noticed a small, handwritten name on the cover. It said Zendru. That was a Fire Nation name. But this book was written by the Air Nomads about the Water Tribes. Could it be a Fire Nation Spy that infiltrated the Western Air Temple and bumped into Jessa on the way? However, Fire Nation spies normally settled in the Earth Kingdom due to its growing numbers of daofei, insecureness, and high velocities of power and troops. They didn't care about the Air Nomads at all. Could this ‘Zendru' have killed her best friend. She would probably never know. The assassin was caught shortly after Jesa's death. She was on her way to a Water Tribe prison right now. But if she was fire nation then she could easily bend out of those prisons by melting the ice. She had to get to the Water Tribe quickly, and the only thing faster than an Air Bison is an Air Nomad Glider. The very same thing she packed earlier that day. The only problem was that gliders could only fly short distances. But she wasn't losing anyone else today. With no hesitation, she clung onto her glider and jumped.

She flew like the wind, gaining speed and height as the minutes went on. After a while she could see Sister Nyomana's bison Jungjong, in the distance. She chased it with the speed of an Eel Hound and soon enough they were side by side. She could see an island up ahead in the Mo Ce Sea. They would deal with the prisoner there. Until then, all she could do was fly side by side with Jungjong and wait. As soon as they landed, Yangchen reverted her glider back into a staff and stood waiting for the prisoner to dismount the bison. But she shouldn't have waited. Fire fists were already coming from the saddle and a girl who had earlier been wearing water tribe robes was now wearing a recognizable fire nation outfit. She must have hidden it under the cloaks. Yangchen doubled back on herself. The firepower just kept coming and coming. She couldn't defend everyone for much longer. And then suddenly, she felt like her eyes were leaking light. Her graceful airbending maneuvres became the wavy, calm way of the waterbenders. Then, she made a wave the size of the whole Western Air Temple and sent it straight for the island. It was going to wash away everyone. But Yangchen didn't worry. Instead she created a dome of air protecting her and her Nun friends. But the firebender wasn't protected. She got washed away by the rogue wave. The immortal power of the Avatar State was now at Yangchen's disposal. She was the unbeatable force of a tsunami, hurricane, volcano and earthquake. If anyone doubted her Avatarhood, they wouldn't now. Because she could whirl air and water above their heads now. She was Szeto's reincarnation. She was the Avatar.
