Bato Northuldra is a dominant waterbending master, a member of the Southern Water Tribe, and a close friend of Katara and Sokka's father, Hakoda, since childhood. He is the second husband and mate of Ozai, the stepfather of Zuko and Azula, and the father of Maya and Melody ll. By extension, he is the stepfather-in-law of Sokka and Katara, the father-in-law of Kyomi, and the step-grandfather of Saoirse, Kiara, Amaya, and Kida as well as the maternal grandfather of Yue ll. After Ozai and his children fled to the South Pole from the Fire Nation after being banished by Ursa, he ended up falling in love with Ozai, and the two eventually married after three years of dating, with Ozai becoming pregnant with his child after three years of marriage.
A father and a lover, Bato would lay down his life just to protect those that he cared about, which is part of the reason why he joined the other men in the war, and left his pregnant mate back at the South Pole with their children and the rest of the village.

Not much was known about Bato, other than the fact that he left with the rest of the men in the tribe to join the Earth Kingdom in fighting the war against Fire Lord Ursa and the Fire Nation. When he reunited with Ozai, Zuko, Katara, Sokka, and Azula following the fall of Ba Sing Se, Ozai was holding a baby in his arms, explaining that their daughter, Maya, was born two weeks ago during the Spring Equinox.
