The 46th Earth King, born Bang, was the ruler of the Earth Kingdom around 270 BG. His reign was unpopular among his people, and there were several revolts against his leadership, including the War of Chin the Conqueror and the Peasant Uprising in Ba Sing Se. After yielding to pressure by Avatar Kyoshi to reform his style of governance, the 46th Earth King ultimately helped to draft a new constitution for the Earth Kingdom which transformed the country into a constitutional monarchy and brought considerable progress as well as prosperity to its people.

History[]

Early life and court intrigues[]

Bang was born in 347 BG, the younger brother of the 44th Earth King Yi Ming. Prince Bang always had ambitions for power and visions of the Earth Kingdom as an autocratic absolute monarchy. However, Yi Ming had more support in the government and his family, so Bang decided to stay close to his brother and assist him survive the Wars of Secrets and Daggers. Among others, Bang foiled Prince Vuong's plot to overthrow the 44th Earth King, and also eliminated Princess Bui Thi, who was beginning to gain influence and he eliminate potential rivals.

At the age of twenty, he was married to Qinci. Bang initially treated their marriage as a formality, but over time he fell in love with her. Later, they had a son, whom they named after them "Ban Qin".

When Yi Ming died, his daughter, Zetian, took the throne. Bang decided to take advantage of the situation and began manipulating the new queen. He convinced her that the rest of the family was plotting against her. Zetian believed him and asked her uncle for help. Bang organized a banquet at the Earth Kingdom Royal Palace for the royal family, ensuring that the drinks were poisoned. Bang, thanks to his skills and influence, successfully poisoned the drinks without anyone's knowledge. The plan succeeded and many family members died from poisoning. Additionally, Bang framed Prince Chet, Princess Anchali and Grand Secretariat Wugu for the incident, and they were arrested. This event became known as the "Sleeping Elite Banquet". After eliminating much of the royal family, Bang and his supporters surrounded Zetian, threatened her to abdicate and hand over power to him. Zetian complied under pressure, and Bang stripped her of her royal titles and banished her from Ba Sing Se.

As the Earth King[]

Bang took the throne as the 46th Earth King, completely abandoning his personal name, unlike Zetian or Yi Ming, who continued to use their personal names despite being Earth Monarchs. This was meant to bolster the cult of personality and strengthen the authority of the monarchy, laying the foundation for future autocracy.

Since ascending to the throne in 287 BG, the 46th Earth King has shown no interest in his citizens at all, especially those from the lowest echelons of society. He was also not afraid to use force against rebellion, for example, when a peasant uprising broke out in the Eastern Provinces, the monarch sent General Ran-Roe to mercilessly suppress the rebellion as a warning to other revolts.

Chin's rebellion[]

Chin the Great

Chin the Conqueror organized a rebellion against the 46th Earth King and successfully conquered the entire country.

Eventually in 280 BG, seven years after the 46th Earth King came to the throne, a warlord from the Chin clan, Chin, traveled northwest and gathered a large army, which he intended to use to conquer the Earth Kingdom. Chin successfully took advantage of the hatred towards the Earth King in the country, as well as the lack of local elites killed by Jianzhu, quickly conquering the northwest and forming an army. The Earth King sent his armies to defeat the rebels, but for the most part the Earth Kingdom Army was either defeated or defected to the warlord's side. One of the climactic clashes was the Battle of Llamapaca's Crossing, in which Chin's troops and the forces of General Ran-Roe faced each other. The Earth King ordered the general to repeat Feishan's victory over Nong from several generations ago, but Chin successfully exploited all the enemy's weaknesses and routed Ran-Roe's forces. After several more skirmishes, the Earth Kingdom Army retreated to Ba Sing Se, and the 46th Earth King barricaded himself in the capital, leaving the rest of the kingdom to their own devices.

By 270 BG, Chin's armies had conquered all of the Earth Kingdom except Ba Sing Se and the Yokoya peninsula. Fortunately for the 46th Earth King, Chin was killed during the invasion of the peninsula, when Avatar Kyoshi separated Yokoya from the mainland, creating Kyoshi Island, and the stubborn and furious Chin fell off a cliff, ending his rebellion.

Decline in popularity and peasant uprising[]

The government's inability to deal with Chin's rebellion did, however, have repercussions. The massive losses the Earth Kingdom sustained led the citizens to realize many of the government's failures, and popular sentiment grew into the belief that the monarchy was outdated and did not support the people's interests. In Ba Sing Se, this belief led to a peasant uprising; thousands of peasants stormed the Upper Ring and destroyed anything that represented the "old government". They eventually surrounded the Earth King's palace and demanded he be removed from his position.

Kyoshi threatens the 46th Earth King

After Avatar Kyoshi defeated his guards, the 46th Earth King was threatened into talking with the peasants.

Realizing he was unable to handle the revolt, the Earth King summoned Avatar Kyoshi to his court and ordered her to keep the populace in line. Kyoshi refused and demanded the king listen to his people. Outraged by her audacity, the Earth King ordered her arrest, but the fully realized Avatar easily defeated the king's guards. Powerless against the might of the Avatar, the Earth King complied and had no other choice than to give in to Kyoshi's request to hear the peasants' complaints. In return, Kyoshi would protect the king's interests and Ba Sing Se's cultural heritage by training an elite force of earthbenders in the art of stealth, silence, and precision. This group became known as the Dai Li. With the Earth King's rule secure once more, he agreed to cooperate with Kyoshi in drafting a new constitution for the nation. This legislation transformed the Earth Kingdom into a constitutional monarchy, and greatly benefitted the country's poor. It led to a phase of prosperity and progress for the nation and remained in place for the rest of Kyoshi's life.

Later years and death[]

The Earth King was still involved in politics, although he did not feel comfortable in the role of a limited monarch. The 46th Earth King he reigned until his death in the fall of 258 BG, and was succeeded by his grandson, the 47th Earth King Huixin.

Personality[]

Bang was ambitious, ruthless, confident and decisive, but also impatient and reckless. His ambitions exceeded him, and the incompetence of his rule made him deeply unpopular among the citizens. He was bitter and unforgiving, often reopening old wounds and looking at those who had once fallen in his way with disheartening eyes, including Avatar Kyoshi.

Abilities[]

Bang was undoubtedly a master of court intrigue and scheming, eliminating those who posed a threat to Yi Ming during the Wars of Secrets and Daggers. However, as a ruler himself, he was not very outstanding, even inept, which led to many rebellions against him. He also had earthbending skills, but, despite his potential, he neglected this art in favor of political conspiracies.
