| "Future lives are severed from the knowledge that previous lives have experienced, only through the Avatar spirit when we connect with our past lives do we unlock the knowledge. Past lives can share their knowledge of a bending style to a future life but it is crucial that a new Avatar must experience discipline, failure, success, and train for years to be a true master of the four elements. " |
| — Avatar Xi Tong discloses information to Rong Yan before retelling his story in Chapter 14: Xi Tong Village |
Xi Tong is the Earth Kingdom Avatar succeeding Avatar Arrluk, and preceding before Avatar Ilah. Xi Tong had appeared to Avatar Rong Yan when he came to visit Xi Tong village where the governor Jie Tong a descendant of Avatar Xi resided in, he has a chapter dedicated to his life in Avatar: The Legacy of Rong Yan.
History[]
Conflicted Destiny[]
Avatar Xi was born to the 36th Earth King and his wife, in the Upper Ring of Ba Sing Se, he had been the first child tested by the earth sages. When he passed the test he was hailed as the reincarnation of Avatar Arrluk and would be watched closely by the sages until his sixteenth birthday. For the longest time, his father denied his son's status as the new Avatar.
Ku's selfishness denied publicity of his son as the Avatar, his wife knew that her son's destiny was to master the four elements and become the Avatar. But he argued with her that Xi's place was in the palace as the next Earth King. Xi was the only heir Ku had.
On his sixteenth birthday, the earth sages arrived to tell Xi it was time to travel the world and master the other three elements like he was supposed to. His father argued with the sages telling them that his son was a prince not a servant who protected peasants. He had eavesdropped the argument between Zhuyao the head sage and his father. He had made the decision to hide his son and force him to abandon his Avatar duties.
That night Xi, fled from the palace leaving his coronet on his father's throne he went to the temple where Zhuyao helped him escape. Gifting him an albatross crane which he named Tang and gave him a scroll and told him to travel to Yin La where the Fire Lord will assist him in finding a firebending master.
An Heirless Throne[]
During his time in the Northern Water Tribe where he spent his life training waterbending he had received letters from his mother. Years into his training he learned that his father passed onto the Spirit World and that his mother had appointed a regent lord to the throne, the co-chancellor of the council she oversaw. That he would remain, regent lord, until they could find an heir to the throne. Her cousins had refused to take power, and for thirty-three years the territory was ruled by a regency.
Regent Lord's Reign of Terror[]
Five years later, Baojun's true colors were shown and he began to throw the city-state into disarray. Still, no heir to the throne for the time being the Tong dynasty had come to a sudden stop. Xi communicated with a past life that he held dear to his life because they shared similarities. Avatar Duryaja had shared with Xi his life story and retelling the tale of how the Earth Kingdom came to be.
The three warring territories fought for land and resources each dynasty was given land by the legendary Earth Emperor from which they descended. The first Earth Empire was ruled by the Zhou, Shang, and Xia kingdoms they were all related to each other but the Shang and Xia allied to take down the Zhou kingdom believing that the Zhou dynasty had more power in the land over them.
Avatar Duryaja and his army fought off the legion of Shang and Xia armies and allowed them to co-exist in what he now called the Earth Kingdom. Ruled by him he established the Earth monarchy that began with the Zhou dynasty and became the first Earth King. He shared with Xi Tong that he too was the Avatar and the king of the Earth Kingdom. He advised him to take caution and speak with a lion turtle who would teach him a rare ability that was once used by the first Avatar and people from the time that the first Avatar existed in the world. He would be able to use this ability against Baojun and strip him of his bending.
Avatar Xi Tong did just that he spoke with Mun Jin when he awoke on a mysterious island. His past life told him to find the head and speak with the lion turtle. He was gifted the ability to bend energy, an ability now, that only the Avatar could possess.
He fought Baojun and stripped him of his earthbending casting him into prison where he later died of an illness. He ascended to the throne as the 37th Earth King and final king of the Tong dynasty.
Later Life[]
In his final seven years of life at the age of 84, he stepped down an appointed a new regent lord to the throne when his two daughters refused the throne and bore no sons. He had a nephew that was born four years after his death who became the new Earth King. The second regent lord ruled until the 38th Earth King took power in 1025 BG.
Abilities[]
Xi Tong, was born an earthbender, and the reincarnation of Avatar Arrluk.
Earthbending[]
Being a child born into royalty, his father found him the very best earthbending teacher in the land who trained him. Training hard day and night, he shared blood, sweat, and tears with other students at an academy.
Avatar Xi Tong, in Avatar Aang's vision.
Becoming the advanced student in his teacher's class, he was the favorite of the class. His teacher often called him an earthbending prodigy. He mastered earthbending a month before his 11th birthday.
Firebending[]
He escaped his responsibility to the throne and fled to the Fire Nation, where he learned firebending from the Fire Lord himself. At the time the Fire Lord was the most powerful firebender. There Xi Tong spent at least half of a year or so mastering firebending.
Airbending[]
He later traveled to the Northern Air Temple, to master airbending. Being that Xi Tong was the Earth Avatar, airbending did not come as easy as firebending did. The 37 levels of airbending took more than four years, because he also failed some of the tests there.
So after his four years at the Northern Air Temple, he finally mastered airbending. His teacher was the Hegumen of the theocratic government that ruled the Northern Air Temple. Learning of his status as a prince of Ba Sing Se, he saw to it that he was taught by the best of the best.
Waterbending[]
The last element of his cycle, was waterbending. It came easy to him as firebending did. He was taught by the prince of the Northern Water Tribe. He was a powerful waterbender he had dueled the prince. The Avatar State triggered and had sent a tsunami at the prince. Saving the city from the tsunami he calmed Xi and helped him lower the powerful wave. He mastered waterbending in a year.
Avatar State[]
He had remained in the Northern Tribe where the head shaman, had helped him unlock all his chakras and had helped Xi Tong master the Avatar State. Not much is known, but he was able to enter in and out of the Avatar State at will.
Energybending[]
He was on vacation with his family, in the Hou Tian province. When suddenly one night he awoke, to strange chanting outside, of the manor he was currently residing in. He wandered toward the shore, and saw a small island. He created an ice path towards the island and began to explore it.
Gone for exactly three days, from the manor. His family was worried and thought he had been kidnapped. They began search parties for Xi Tong, but to no avail they did not find the Avatar. To Xi Tong, it had felt like he had been there for only hours.
He meditated and contacted his past lives to see if they knew anything, or knew where he was. After talking to Avatar Arrluk, Arrluk had no idea where Xi Tong was. Dismissing Arrluk, he spoke with Avatar Mun Jin, Mun Jin immediately recognized his surroundings and had told Xi Tong, that he was called forth by a lion turtle.
He mentioned that he had to swim to the head of the lion turtle to speak with it, that the lion turtle would give him an ability that was most powerful but also dangerous.
Running to the front side of the island, he jumped into the water and encountered the Lion turtle. Xi Tong was frightened by the large ancient beast. Lifting him up with his hand, the lion turtle explained this ability to him.
The ability was able to take away a bender's abilities away, give a bender his abilities back, or even transfer knowledge to one future life from a past one. Giving the future life, experiences and information that they seek.
Granting him the ability to energybend. Instead of killing his enemy or the evil-doers, Xi Tong only took their bending abilities away if they ever had any.

Trivia[]
- Xi means "west" in Chinese.
- Tong means "sun about to rise" in Chinese.
- Originally, I chose the name because the Duryajian Kingdom was called the 'western kingdom' in the comic. The sun rose in the west.
- In the rewriting of the Legacy of Rong Yan, his name was changed to Xi and his last name is now Tong. A noble family was created to add more to his legacy.
- The Tong family still exists and the latest descendants in 659 BG are Jie, Wei, Yan, and Min.
- The chapter of Xi Tong village was originally a short filler chapter where Rong Yan only met the previous mayor Zhuyao and the invasion began. It was rewritten to be a tour of a museum, a link, meeting the governor, speaking with Avatar Xi and then an invasion. Zhuyao became the head Earth Sage in Xi's life.
- Both Avatar Xi Tong and Avatar Duryaja Zhou were kings.
